Instrumentl lets you drill down to a granular level of detail when performing searches (example, search by multiple different keywords, size of grants, fields of work). I like that I can have multiple projects set up (for different organizations and programs). I like that you can look at details about Funders including giving details about who they've given to and whether or not they give grants to first-time applicants or not. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** Regarding 'Geography,' it would be nice to be able to have two different search options - 1) for the geographic location of the applicant organization 2) for the geographic location of the population being served (by the organization you're seeking funding for). Of course, it's also always nice to see opportunities for getting discounts, if you are a vulnerable community member (example, marginalized community member, other). **What problems is Instrumentl solving and how is that benefiting you?** Instrumentl helps me to find funders for the organizations I work for. Grant and funding research is so much simpler now that we use Instrumentl. The process for submitting funding requests is streamlined and the software is easy to work with. As a small not for profit, we pride ourselves in not creating debt, so it was at first difficult for our board to justify the additional expense of another software program. We already purchase Volgistics for volunteer management,Donorsnap for donor management, event software and our POS systems which all add to that precious bottomline. However, after our trial period I found so many funding opportunities for our organization , we couldn't afford not to purchase Instrumentl. I love the webinars, even when I feel like I don't have time for another meeting or webinar I attend the Instrumental sessions. I learn how to do something new or easier each session. I also appreciate Instrumentl 's customer support. They have always contacted me quickly to address any need or question I have had. ### 4. For example, our organization does not accept government funding so I have to click the button to eliminate them from every search. Having all of the important information in one place is very efficient, and I love being able to visually see all the grants I am working on. Being able to collaborate with team members by assigning tasks and deadlines is also very helpful. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** The only downside that I have seen is the limited number of users on the free version. We have multiple volunteers that are working on funding, but we are not all able to access InstrumentL at the same time. **What problems is Instrumentl solving and how is that benefiting you?** InstrumentL is helping our team save a lot of time researching and organizing grant funder information, and it is keeping us from duplicating work by allowing us to collaborate. You know you're only looking at active grant opportunities and results are easy to sort by deadlines and other factors as well. As a professional grant writer, I've also been able to use the database to sort my results into a grants calendar that I can present to clients without creating an entirely separate document in Microsoft Office. The calendar is simple to update with additional prospects whenever we update our research. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** I think the funder profiles on Instrumentl could be more detailed, with more information on each funder's giving history. I think they are working on expanding the historical information on funders in the database, but right now many of the profiles lack the in-depth history that you can sometimes access through Foundation Directory Online. **Recommendations to others considering Instrumentl:** Instrumentl streamlines the grant search process for any nonprofit or fundraising consultant/firm. I highly recommend! **What problems is Instrumentl solving and how is that benefiting you?** Instrumentl has definitely streamlined the research and presentation process for me as a professional grant writer. I now ONLY use Instrumentl when I am working with a client to begin prospect research from scratch, build a list of prospects and a grants calendar, and then update it on a regular basis. Being able to do all of those things on one platform, then send PDFs to my clients, has made me more efficient and effective on their behalf. ### 8. I list the cause I'm supporting, and it goes out and finds the grants applicable to the project! And, Instrumentl doesn't stop there -- it allows me to track the grant and whether I was successful in getting the grant. I love the reports which I can download and keep up with the grants I should work on first. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** I haven't found anything I dislike. In the beginning, I named a project Seniors, I got high school seniors as well as aging seniors! I love that all tidbits of information come up onto one neat profile that I can save, share with nonprofit clients or just extract the Intel I need most. I also noted that there are consistently newer IRS 990 reports than on Guidestar, Foundation Directory Online and GrantMatch. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** Nothing so far! I have not taken the tutorial on how to use it properly, which is my fault, so I stumble when I want to remove a project and add another--but I am getting there! **Recommendations to others considering Instrumentl:** Take the time to speak with a representative about creating a plan that meets your needs and budget. **What problems is Instrumentl solving and how is that benefiting you?** My team works with over 30 nonprofits, many in the same mission space, so being able to hone in on exactly what projects and programs foundations are funding at similar charities is helpful-sometimes Instrumentl has grant details that are not included in the funder's 990! Also, this is excellent for finding NEW prospects -especially national funders that will give to regional or statewide organizations with which we were unfamiliar. Grant writing is a numbers game--you have to keep the number in the pipeline constantly filled and with all the new prospects we are finding, we feel like we can add to the pool, assuring that the possibilities of winning the grants are feasible, not a long shot. ### 10. It provides a one-stop website to research grantmakers that match your project and track progress. Not only does Instrumentl provide contact information for the Funding Opportunity matches, but it also includes grant deadlines, which are updated and accurate. The Tracker function enables the user to narrow down the best potential foundations and track status and milestones, which is easily downloadable for reporting purposes. Milestones and deadlines are also emailed directly to all project team members, so everyone is on the same page on the project, and nobody misses a deadline. As a consultant, I have several different nonprofit clients, and I can easily keep my projects separate, but share potential funders and research between them. Another great feature is the ability to upload documents to the potential funder's page, so all grant paperwork is stored and easy to access by all team members. Having used other grant researching software at our local community foundation which is very user-UNfriendly, I am thrilled to have found Instrumentl for my growing consulting and grant writing business. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** So far, I haven't found anything I dislike about Instrumentl! Full disclosure: I have been using the software since February 2022, so I haven't used Instrumentl yet to track reporting deadlines yet. **Recommendations to others considering Instrumentl:** Instrumentl may be a large investment for a solo consultant / grant writer or a small nonprofit, but it is well worth every dollar spent! **What problems is Instrumentl solving and how is that benefiting you?** In the huge universe of funding organizations, it can be overwhelming to narrow down the best matches. Hours of researching and reams of paper used printing are no longer necessary with Instrumentl. Their recommendations for potential matches for my projects are numerous and quality, but I can quickly review them and add to my tracker to continue researching or hide if they aren't a good fit for a particular project. I also love the ability to copy a project, so I can add a new one for that organization without having to re-check geographic areas served and fields of work. ### 11. But the company is always making changes in response to user requests, so things keep improving. I love the ease of the interface, the practically real-time updating, and the ability to add data from previous tracking tools into one place. It's perfect if your team works remotely, and the customer service is top-notch. Again, real people answering in practically real time. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** The only suggestion I can make probably applies only to freelancers who work for multiple organizations. The Master Tracker combines all projects into one, which is fine if you're a sole organization, but if you're a freelancer, it forces you to have to filter all the time. Perhaps there can be a preferred or "favorite" option for the default tracker. **Recommendations to others considering Instrumentl:** Cancel all your other subscriptions. Instead, they are sent to us to make it easier and faster to review. Like the option to like or follow a funder and see the other grants they have out. And having the grants on a list and sorted by the months make it a lot easier to know when grants are due. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** The only thing is when you mark a change on the grant you have open and the list resets to the top. Then have to re-scroll to where was to continue going down the list for reviews with our team. They are very helpful when I first started using Instrumentl. Competing platforms do some of these things; Instrumentl is the only one I've seen that does all of them. **What do you dislike about Instrumentl?** Having everything in one place is also, in some ways, the biggest bump -- it means you have to get used to the way Instrumentl organizes information, and that's a little bit of a learning curve. Clicking on alerts to new funding matches doesn't immediately show you the new matches, for example; you're taken to the page, but there are still additional steps to see the matches. It's not a big deal, but it would be nice if that weren't the case.
