Once you are in the network, the setup is clear and easy. **What do you dislike about Toptal?** I would say that one of the not so positive experiences has to do with the lack of feedback from Toptal's matchers and coordinators. In general, I have to chase them to know how my application is doing or when the project starts, or in case of delays, what is happening and when the engagement will finally start, or asking for the customer's feedback about my job. As a suggestion, it would be important to me that Toptal would be a little more transparent about the final hourly fee charged to the client for my role on an engagement. Secondly, since you have already cleared their own technical tests, the other companies don't tend you put you through another round of odious technical tests. Toptal's name is enough to indicate your comptency. **What do you dislike about Toptal?** If I have to find something, it would be that the first payment could have been made sooner. You will have to wait an extra two weeks or more before getting paid in comparison to other places. **What problems is Toptal solving and how is that benefiting you?** There is definitely a dearth of competent professionals, especially in the software development arena, out there and on many occasions, companies may not have the budget or time to get someone on-board on permanent basis. Toptal proves to be an excellent resource to get exemplary, professional work on short-term basis. For the contractor, it's an excellent way to generate quick income without long-term commitment. After my last company filed for bankruptcy, I started looking for a permanent job and it has been a hard market to crack. I cannot stress enough how terrible my experience with Toptal was from start to finish. If you’re considering using their service, run in the opposite direction. First off, their so-called “vetting process” is a complete joke. They claim to have the “top 3%” of freelancers, but what they really have are overpriced, underqualified contractors who are no better than what you’d find on Fiverr or Upwork for a fraction of the price. The developer I was matched with missed deadlines, delivered garbage work, and constantly made excuses. When I asked for a replacement, I was met with delays, empty promises, and terrible customer service. Speaking of customer service—good luck getting any real help. The support team is unresponsive, arrogant, and completely useless. Instead of addressing my concerns, they pushed back with bureaucratic nonsense and tried to gaslight me into thinking the issues were my fault. They are only interested in taking your money and will do anything to avoid accountability. And don’t even get me started on billing. They locked me into an overpriced contract and then had the nerve to charge me for hours that weren’t even worked! When I disputed it, they stalled, ignored my emails, and refused to issue a refund. It was the most frustrating, scammy experience I’ve ever had with a company. Save yourself the headache and stay FAR AWAY from Toptal. There is nothing premium about their service—just premium-level scamming. If you want real talent, go anywhere else. In one instance, they asked me to lower my rate from $80/hour to $47/hour. It turned out that the client had a budget of $82/hour, and so they wanted to reserve $35/hour for their take rate. The engagement never happened because the client asked me if I could lower my rate further, which is when they told me what their budget was. When I brought up the issue with the matcher, and mentioned that the client was still interested, instead of working toward making the engagement happen, I was 'coached' about not talking about rates. I was on a longer engagement, and that one ended up falling apart because Toptal was charging them $110/hour and only paying me $75/hour. The client ran out of funding. Its hard to have long term relationships when a solid $35/hour is being taken off the top. I understand that they need to make their business profitable, but 35-50% is excessive. There were also many times that I would put in a bunch of work applying for an engagement, and I would either not hear anything, or the engagement would be cancelled before interviews. It usually takes atleast 15-20 minutes to do a good application, so it can be a real time suck to do those without any response. There are also times when the screening is just not there. I did an interview with someone who had a $6k budget to basically make magic happen. When you consider that Toptal is going to take half of that budget, there was just no way that the work could be done in the week or two that they could have afforded. A matcher should have identified that before putting the work on the platform, as I was able to identify the issue in 15 mintues. **What problems is Toptal solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am not good at finding clients as a freelancer, and they are able to find business, and have a good platform to match clients and freelancers.
