## About Scaleform
Scaleform enables developers to leverage the power of the Adobe Flash tool set to create user interface environments for PCs, games consoles, mobile devices, and consumer technologies.

## Scaleform Reviews
  ### 1. As far as I am aware, Scaleform isn't supported anymore.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 20, 2022

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

What I USED to like about Scaleform was how fast and easy it was to stand up a fluid UI with focus controls. In addition to that, the Flash IDE was great for design work.

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

That the products used for Scaleform (Adobe Flash) are a subscription-based and as far as I am aware, no longer supported. As game developers, we need to be on the latest and greatest tools in order to stay relevant.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

At the moment, none. In the past we were doing an entire game's UI in Scaleform and scaling it to multiple console including PS4, PC, and XBox. It was extremely handy to have the focus manager as well as a tried and true development pipeline and design pattern that was provided with the examples.

  ### 2. Scaleform - The best in the business

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Umang Y. | Associate, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 09, 2021

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

It has smooth functioning, amazing pre built integrations for popular engines which are actually very important. Moreover it gives access to all the functionality of flash developed in the past years. It also give the access to the full source code .

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

At times it gets difficult to write flash characters more than 40 times. Other than that it has no flaws and hardly have any dislike

**Recommendations to others considering Scaleform:**

One has to be sure that if they have a flash developer.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is basically used for creating user interfaces for games. It has skinnable components out of the box to build UI interfaces quickly and effortlessly. It is also very good if you want to use it for complex animation in your game.

  ### 3. Concept is great, but does not pan out anymore

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 14, 2021

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

The idea of using a simple scripting language to design and manage UI elements. That is great since the UI designers don't need to know C++ to create UIs, plus we can test the ui outside of the engine without no problem

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

Well, since Adobe has made it almost impossible to get the older versions of ActionScript. It is a pain to onboard a new person. We have one computer with the correct version of adobe flash, and all the UI Designers share it. One thing I would say to change is using HTML5(html+js), please. We are talking to Coherent Labs about their middleware for our next title since it is pure-ish HTML5

**Recommendations to others considering Scaleform:**

If you have to use, then yes i would. If you dont have to use, HELL NO

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

First, the UI were being done in C++. This was not good since our designers don't know C++, so that would mean our engineers would have to do and take them off more critical tasks. And It would slow the UI design process down.

benefits realized- Yes, since now our engineers are only doing about 10-20% of tasks related to UI work, and most of the functions are now being done by the Designers.

  ### 4. Good tool in general, but with it's flaws and limitations

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dmitry D. | Investor; Technical Director; Developer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2021

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

If you know Flash, you'll be right at home. There are some things that you need to keep in mind during work with Scaleform, but in general the workflow is very similar to good old Flash Platform

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

1. No hot reload. You need to recompile swf, upload it and restart the client
2. Some Flash features are not supported, some are acting differently from native Flash
3. Support was slow and for some simple cases it was easier to patch the sources manually, rather then wait for vendor solution

**Recommendations to others considering Scaleform:**

Make sure that you have a Flash developers

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was creating UI for World of Tanks game. If you have a Flash developers, you are golden. But do you?

  ### 5. Easy to implement

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Market Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 29, 2021

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

It is great tool for flash programmers. Good UI interface and smooth functioning, most of the things do not require core language understanding.

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

The performance of this tool is slow and difficult to manage multiple layers.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating user interface is easy and fast. Very useful in complex custom requirements. Integration of multiple layer can be done easily.

  ### 7. Scaleform it content Macromedia flash file

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2022

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

I used to Macromedia flash, it is easy to implement

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

Now flash is discontinued, now moving to the new game engine

**Recommendations to others considering Scaleform:**

Software technology is moving fast forward, keep learnings

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Help UI in cry engine, now I'm moving to unreal engine that doesn't require scaleform animore

  ### 8. Loved Scaleform for using Flash, not sure what to make of it without an active flash community.

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 14, 2021

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

Flash was a versatile tool for building UI systems with a rich catalog of solutions to prototype and develop with.

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

There was a lot of performance overhead for using Scaleform/Flash and the layer to interface with it was difficult to manage.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We made GTAV with Scaleform, and started RDR2 with it, before moving to an in-house UI solution.

  ### 9. Solid UI framework for building game interfaces.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 20, 2021

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

Being AS based, there is plenty documentation and community examples for whatever you need to accomplish.

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

Performance can be somewhat better, especially on older devices.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having skinnable components out of the box to build/prototype UI interfaces quickly and painlessly.

  ### 10. Scaleform gives you the functionality of Flash and gives artists control, but is not supported

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sharan V. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

Scaleform gives you access to all the functionality of Flash developed over years, plus the ability to use ActionScript for scripting. It also makes it easy for Flash-savvy artists to control the art and animations themselves which can then be triggered by the programmer through ActionScript. You also have access to the full source code if you do need to make changes.

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

As soon as Adobe dropped support for Flash support for ScaleForm was also dropped, so it is no longer being updated, While Scaleform and ActionScript are still badly needed skills when it is used, because it's no longer supported it is primarily used in older games being updated for new platforms when there isn't time to redo the whole UI system, so these skills are basically a dead end and therefore I can't really recommend them for new projects.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Scaleform is primarily used for creating user interfaces for games. It is especially good if you need to use any complex animations in your game, since Flash started as an animation tool. ActionScript also allows you to add display functionality and keep it out of the C++ code.

  ### 11. Beats out Adobe Air

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 12, 2018

**What do you like best about Scaleform?**

Smooth functionality, great pre-built integrations for popular engines like Unreal or Unity, which is important.

**What do you dislike about Scaleform?**

How do I write Flash enough times to fill 40 characters. Flash.

**Recommendations to others considering Scaleform:**

Just use it. Again, the integrations with UE and Uni make it a must have.

**What problems is Scaleform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work with an indie studio that uses Scaleform for UI building. It's accessible and the devs swear by it. Integrates with the newest UE which is great.
