  ### 21. Blazing-Fast Test Databases with Powerful Features, But Steep Learning Curve

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ravindra N. | SDET - 2, Oil & Energy, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 31, 2025

**What do you like best about SAP HANA Cloud?**

Ephemeral test databases for each PR. With HDI containers and instance templates, I can spin a clean HANA schema per pipeline, load fixtures, run integration tests, and tear it down. Ridiculously fast set-based data setup. The in-memory column store + SQLScript lets me generate millions of realistic rows (orders, line items, events) in minutes. Great for perf/regression runs without waiting on upstream systems.
Smart Data Access for “virtual” dependencies. I can federate into S/4HANA sandboxes or flat files and keep tests end-to-end without copying everything. It cuts flakiness from stale replicas.
Observation that actually helps. HANA Cockpit + expensive statements trace + plan visualizations make it obvious which queries are hurting our E2E timings. Quick wins: compression settings, column store indexes, and parameterized plans.
Security that doesn’t block testing. Roles, analytic privileges, and schema isolation let us mimic production access patterns in tests (RBAC, row-level filters) so auth bugs surface early.
Elasticity when we need it. Scale up for load tests, scale down for regular CI. Data tiering to the data lake keeps costs sane for big historical fixtures.

**What do you dislike about SAP HANA Cloud?**

Privilege model can be a maze. HDI container roles + classic schema privileges are powerful but confusing; onboarding new QA engineers takes time.
SQLScript quirks. Great for set logic, less fun for procedural control flow and unit testing small routines.
Tooling sprawl. Cockpit, BAS, CLI, DP Agent… it works, but context-switching is real compared to a single Postgres+psql workflow.

**What problems is SAP HANA Cloud solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Deterministic, production-like test data. Parameterized generators and calculation views create consistent datasets per build, cutting “data drift” flakiness and shaving ~20–30% off pipeline time because we stop firefighting bad fixtures.
Shift-left performance checks. We run micro-benchmarks against HANA Cloud during CI (hot caches, cold caches) and fail builds when a query regresses. Faster feedback, fewer “why is prod slow?” surprises. True E2E without heavy stubs. SDA lets us validate cross-system flows with virtualized tables, so we test business logic, not mocks.
Lower ops overhead for QA infra. Templates + automation mean I spend more cycles writing scenarios and less baby-sitting shared environments.

**What do you like best about SAP HANA Cloud?**

What I like best about SAP HANA Cloud is the speed. Honestly, it handles big amounts of data really fast, and that makes my work so much easier. I also like that it’s flexible. you can scale it up or down depending on what you need, and you don’t have to stop everything to do it. Plus, since it connects well with other SAP tools, it feels smooth when you’re running reports or doing analytics

**What do you dislike about SAP HANA Cloud?**

Sometimes it feels a bit complicated to set up at the start, especially if you’re not already familiar with SAP systems. The pricing can also get a little high when you scale up, so smaller teams might find it expensive. Other than that, once you get the hang of it, it works really well.

**What problems is SAP HANA Cloud solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For me, SAP HANA Cloud mainly solves the problem of handling large amounts of data quickly. Before, reports used to take a lot of time, but now I can run them in real time and make decisions faster. It also helps bring data from different sources into one place, so I don’t have to jump between multiple systems. Overall, it saves time, reduces errors, and makes work much smoother
