  ### 3. Managing and collecting data on Redcap

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 14, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I like that I can do work in safe manner, it's HIPPA compliant. Just knowing I'm doing my job by keeping patient information safe during clinical research. Redcap was developed at Vanderbilt and they have tons of training available for starters. once you go through training, it's easy to create instruments and data forms. You can create scales and questions accordingly to meet your needs. Like if you have survey questions, or various rating techniques, you can definitely customize it on Redcap. You can also had videos now. Redcap recently updated the software by adding a messaging option. So you can interact with other team members on redcap. Once data collection is all gathered there's different modes of downloading data in either excel or SPSS or even R. Either way, there's many ways to download and extract the data.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

It can be time consuming when it comes to creating forms and instruments especially if you have hundred of questions to ask! So maybe consulting with an outside professionals might be really beneficial, and if you have funds.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Get the training that's available from the creators at Vanderbilt, it's really helpful. Play around with the instruments. You can either create forms or instruments on the redcap interface or even creating codes on a excel sheet. Either way it's pretty simple to learn, and sometimes fun! Again, if you're doing research, it's aways a good idea to have a HIPPA complaint software.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data collection is made easy. Adding hundreds of questions onto redcap is really easy and you cant go wrong using it. It's also HIPPA complaint so you're know your'e doing your part by keeping people safe. Also, I like to tell people there's different ways of asking questions, like rating scales or even like description boxes if you're collecting qualitative data.

  ### 4. Safe data collection and management

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It's reliable and HIPPA approved. I've used REDCap for several research projects already. It's easy to use and manage large and small scale projects. I've never had any issues with REDCap. It's usually my mistakes when I accidentally don't save something.
There's so many ways to customize the REDCap interface, from participant use to the researcher use. It's really straightforward. REDCap is consistently updating their software, often times on Sundays, which is perfect, I dont work on Sundays.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

I dont like that many people dont use it yet. It's such a really easy and safe software. More people should use it, instead of things like Qualtrics. There's way to collect data in much more meaningful way, which is via REDCap.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

There's likert scale types of formatting, open ended, closed ended, descriptions, and even sliding options for respondents. There's multimedia options too. So it's child friendly - that's if youre collecting data from kids, or even adults. Above all running reports is so easy, You can even save frequently used reports. It's saved me a couple times already! You can extract data in specific ways, in much more modalities than other data collection software.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data collection and management for several projects on one software! You can't get better than that! From small to larger scale projects, REDCap does it all. There's likert scale types of formatting, open ended, closed ended, descriptions, and even sliding options for respondents. There's multimedia options too. Above all running reports is so easy, You can even save frequently used reports. It's saved me a couple times already!

  ### 5. REDCap is a great way to capture participant data

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 11, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap is very helpful in the field of human subjects research. It allows for historical data capture, so you can always see what has been input into every field. You can enter data directly into REDCap, which allows for less paper waste. It has great features that you can utilize such as custom reports and surveys in addition to the data capture features. It is very user friendly as well.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

There is not much that I dislike about REDCap. The only issues I come across are some branching logic issues, but this is more of a mistake on the user's end than the website. Another big issue that the system automatically logs you out if you're inactive for a certain period of time, which can make you lose all the data you were entering if you don't save it before it logs you out.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having an audit trail of data entry is a big issue with other systems such as Microsoft Excel. There is no record of who entered the data and when, unless you are constantly creating new copies of the file. REDCap easily solves that issue. It shows you which user made edits and when they did it. REDCap also prevents people from missing questions on surveys and questionnaires by giving an error message when there is missing data from a field. This is a common mistake on paper forms. Finally, REDCap allows for secured data storage that is easily exportable to common statistical software such as Excel and SPSS for easy data analysis.

  ### 6. Tool for clinical trials and other data research

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Using REDCap had made our job in research so much easier. During our consent process with participants we clearly indicate we use REDCap, a safe mode of data collection and management. In fact, some participants are frequent study subjects are familiar with REDCap (RC). This clearly means other researchers are using RC and people are becoming familiar with its involvement in the clinical trials and research studies. Not only that, there's always new updates, I would say every year or so, making our lives as researchers so much easier. Above all, it's a reliable and efficient mode of data collection.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Our institution has a strong IT group that specializes in REDCap, so we constantly are in contact with our support group. I am aware that they are other organizations that also have these units that support RC users. REDCap is becoming a common software among clinical trials and other research studies.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Using RC has made our lives easier, if you ever have to make changes to your RC forms, changes can be made but always be mindful of the things you do change on the codes. Overall, it's an easy software to learn, there are tons of ways of learning and using RC. You can use RC for large and small projects. Safely storing participant info has been made easy.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Downloading excel sheets of our demographic information and other specific forms that we need to analyze can be easily downloaded directly from RC. Another thing that comes to mind, is that sense of security and protection that RC offers and has, that makes want to continue using RC. You can use it for smaller scale projects to even projects with over 10,000 subjects! It has a wide range of services and different ways to present different instruments such survey forms etc...

  ### 7. Very Easy Data Capture

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 03, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It is easy to build a database by yourself and there is no learning curve. There has only been two times when I could not build a function I needed within a newly created database, and the support team was able to walk me through it and/or build it for me. Very easy to export data in different formats.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

There a typically a lot of downtimes that occur within the system. Lots of updates , that it is hard to keep up. I know they are meant to make the interface more user friedndly, but sometimes I have postpone data entry because of the downtime.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data security was a big problem before RedCap. Previously, certain data was kept on an Excel file, so that the data could be ran in data analysis software. There is no logging in Excel, so we were unable to track down changes to data to a particular source. RedCap completely eliminates that problem.

  ### 8. Great, easily-accessible productivity tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hannah K. | Clinical Research Assistant, Research

> Greetings Hannah!

This is fantastic! Thanks so much for your review of REDCap. Our fastest growth is actually now in the international sector. We have consortium partners from around the world involved in all things REDCap. Since we do provide REDCap for free and work with a small team locally, we really do rely on our international partners to help develop those non-English versions. And, within the English REDCap versions, there are options to have some text at the project level displayed in Chinese, English, French, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. Contact your local REDCap administrator for assistance if needed.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to share this with other G2 Crowd viewers.

**Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap is user-friendly, and yet allows for highly complex projects. It is easy to customize, and yet powerful in terms of its many uses.

REDCap also has features to assign specific roles to people, set up a calendar, and conduct spot checks fo quality assurance purposes.

It is easy to download the data in a variety of formats which makes it easy to analyze in a variety of statistical enviornments (SAS, R, Python, SPSS, etc.)

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

New users should be careful to think about how data will download when designing the front-end of questionnaires and data entry forms. For example, an intuitive front end may require re-coded when it comes time for statistical analysis.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Do many practice executions with your data before "going live" with the product. Your data will be VERY messy if you make any changes to a live database.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1) Creating and distributing questionnaires
2) Collecting data
3) Building longitudinal database
4) Downloading data and conducting quick analyses

I like that the REDCap user interface is highly customizable based on the page creators needs. The data management team also frequently updates the system which is nice.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

My only usage of REDCap has been using pages created by other sites, such as a trial Data Coordinating Center. It may very well be the particular way that that site chose to create their page, but it feels very clunky and cumbersome to use.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Work with the system administrator to design an intuitive page for your needs.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Besides the clunkiness mentioned above, I have had no other problems with REDCap. The benefits we have realized include customizable Electronic Data Capture (EDC) and electronic regulatory binders for clinical

In contrast to Qualtrics, I like that the surveys can be pulled into or out of production when making edits.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Sometimes REDCap can be overly complicated, I have a hard time finding certain functions on the website.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Utilize all the services provided!

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I think REDCap helps us design surveys much better and consolidate all functions into one source.

  ### 17. Helpful Software for Research

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 19, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I like using REDCap to administer surveys and consent forms to research participants, and the ease with which we can track and utilize their responses. But most of all I love using REDCap for its Reports functions - at my fingertips are easy tools to help me collect, categorize, and analyze information for our research study in a variety of ways. The ability to easily use our data in preliminary analysis, without having to export it to outside programs or do lengthy calculations by hand, have been a life-saver.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

I wish I could link some of the data between different Projects, or combine data from multiple projects into our master database Project for easy over-arching analysis.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Use the tutorials videos when you begin! They are a helpful starting-off resource.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

REDCap has allowed us to go paper-less in our Research study, handling consent forms for participants, Research Assistant real-time data entry, and post study processing all in one database. This is critical for establishing a centralized database and ensuring study completion and integrity for our lab.

  ### 19. RedCap for Medical Research

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ly H. | Research Coordinator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 12, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

RedCap is incredibly flexible and you can build so many types of data capturing systems from surveys to complex tracking databases.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

RedCap is in no means a relationship database. It is difficult to link certain data points to others within RedCap.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Take a look at your colleagues RedCaps and have them walk you through their design process and how they use their instruments. Its always interesting to see how others build their products as you can have similar study designs but completely different data capturing systems.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

RedCap lacks the programming to integrate certain research tools which are commonly used which makes it difficult to store non-compatible data. For example, timeline follow backs, common in substance abuse research is not a tool that can be smoothly inputted into RedCap.

  ### 20. Great way to capture, organize, and export large amounts of data

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap allows you to easily create and manage surveys for a task of any size! Even for an extremely large project, REDCap makes it easy to queue groups of surveys together and make links accessible at different time points (for longitudinal research studies, for example). Even among a huge dataset, survey mode and the survey queue creates a clean appearance for the outside user.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Exporting data is a great feature, but the output is not great. In the capacity that I use REDCap, there is no way to filter and choose which variables from a particular survey that you want to export. The result is a very large, confusing dataset.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

REDCap has allowed us to combine all of our pre, during, and post study visit needs. We can store a subject's eligibility/screening information, study visit data collected, and post visit notes/evaluations in the same dashboard. With hundreds of subjects, this is incredibly helpful to have a centralized location for all of this information and has benefitted our organization immensely.

  ### 21. Good tool and easy to use

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mengtian J. | Research Assistant, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

A good to manage large database and it is also easy for people not super proficient in database knowledge or super technical

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

A little bit outdated and not following the most cutting edge technology

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Manage database related to healthcare. It is easy to use and with good user interface.

  ### 22. The best survey software available

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Samantha R. | Program Manager, Higher Education, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2018

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I have used REDCap for over 3 years and it is the strongest survey tool I have had the pleasure to work with. We have used it to create databases, registries, event feedback, and more. It is HIPPAA compliant which has allowed us to use it in healtcare surveys. It has an easy to use tracking system which has allowed us to use it for tracking required responses on a mid-point evaluation. It looks professional and yet is easy to use. There are tons of educational materials about it. And best of all, it is free.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The only option I wish REDCap would add is an easy "ranking" question where users can drag and drop choices in their preferred order

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

If your institution has access to REDCap then I would recommend this product over Qualtrics or SurveyMonkey. It is a stronger application and more secure than other software available.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use REDCap to create patient databases, online registries, and to collect feedback on events.

  ### 23. Good tool for IRB research

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap was pre-approved by our institutional review board, which made it the easiest option for us to use for survey research. It has data protections, user permissions, and data validation capabilities that make it ideal for large scale academic research. It also allowed exports of several commonly used file types for different statistical packages. We had a REDCap expert on campus who made administration and survey initiation easy.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

As someone who used REDCap primarily for its double entry capabilities, I was frustrated that the survey owner or reviewer could not do data entry. We had planned to have two researchers enter the data, then confer to discuss any areas there they disagreed - so we didn't need a third neutral 'reviewer.' I solved this problem by switching my role back and forth between entry and reviewer, but this was a hassle and seemed unnecessary.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

This is a great tool for academic research.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used REDCap exclusively for IRB-approved human subjects research.

  ### 24. Great service, makes research easier!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 09, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

How easy it is to create and send out surveys. We both complete surveys in-house and send them out to research subjects, and all find it easy to use.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

I wish emails could be triggered by certain responses on forms. E.g. If a respondent selects “Yes” on a form, it triggers another form to be created/sent. Like branching logic, but with new forms.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Benefits are endless in that we’re doing healthcare research with RedCap, so the benefits encompass whatever medicine can do!

  ### 25. Data Collection for small and large projects

**Reviewed Date:** April 06, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

The HIPAA secure interface that can be accessed online from any site is extremely convenient. Forms are relatively easy to build (although not quite as user friendly as something like Qualtrics or Survey Monkey). Overall, it works well for database management especially across sites.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The interface is clunky compared to other survey softwares. For sending out surveys to participants, Qualtrics and Survey Monkey are much more user friendly and have a more appealing graphic interface.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Ideal for cross site database management, less user friendly for survey distribution.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Use this software to manage a research database.

  ### 27. Great for research and easy to use!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 27, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I always have to update project designs, add or edit instruments, and designate new instruments for events. RedCap makes all of these things quick and easy. I was also able to learn these processes in no time!

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

You can not designate an instrument for only one research subject. Also, reports can be very useful but making them is not very straightforward. They often yield excel spreadsheets that are oddly layed out and hard to follow.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

RedCap allows my research lab to keep track of study participant data in a reliable and straightforward way. We have data for every participant well-organized in one place that the whole lab has access to and can easily use. I love the survey feature, which allows me to administer questionnaires and surveys to my participants without my involvement, that are automatically saved to the project redcap. It has also been extremely useful to be able to send out surveys to participants and prospective participants who have not yet been seen by me in person.

  ### 28. REDCap

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It's great for research: making surveys, making screeners, running a live study.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

REDcap is extremely difficult to use. Once your study is up and running, it functions well, but you have to tell REDCap exactly what you want or it won't work the way you want. RedCap has a TON of features. I've used REDCap for over 2 years and there are still plenty of things I do not know how to do.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Watch the tutorials, attend trainings, and google questions!

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My team is conduction reach in tobacco regulatory science.

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Easy to use. Contains several editing options for any and all types of data. The branching mechanism is really easy to set up, and there are explanations for those who are less tech-savvy. Hardly ever crashes.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

I can’t really think of much. When I want to add a new field, it may take a long time to set up the different branching mechanisms that need to be associated with it, but that’s understandable.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data collection for research

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It's super easy to make surveys and to keep track of HIPPA protected information with Redcap. I definitely recommend it for non-profits that have to protect sensitive information.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

When you have a lot of projects going on, it can be pretty confusing to manage everything - it's not super user friendly. You really need to get used to finding out where to find the info you want.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Redcap is great because we can go paperless - we just got Android tablets with the Redcap app that auto-fills into the forms online. It's more protected and organized than paper surveys.

  ### 34. Free Research Platform

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Practice | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 10, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Redcap allows me to share data in a deidentified way. It communicates easily with excel and other platforms, and allows me to customize my use.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Not as intuitive as it could be - I wish I could use it without doing so much research.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it to send data to other hospitals as well as to import data sets and make them easier to analyze. I love that it has a library other users can access so you can share your work and build off of others work.

I do wish that REDCap has more built in statistical capabilities so that we are able to quickly tabulate reports of new data coming in at the end of each week.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are trying to administer longitudinal surveys to patients every 6 months. REDCap has been amazing in particular in terms of reminding patients about filling up the surveys.

  ### 37. Overall Great App for Managing Research Surveys

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nicole L. | Technical Associate, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2018

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

The best part of REDCap is that it's HIPPA compliant, which is very important to my lab that does a lot of clinical research studies. It's easy to pull and analyze data from REDCap since there's API support in R and Python. The survey design tools are pretty comprehensive, and when we needed to contact support they have been pretty responsive.

  ### 44. REDCap Review

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 31, 2018

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap provides all the features necessary for research purposes. I can generate a report of all the fields I want and it would be updated in real time. REDCap also provides a mobile application for conducting surveys, which can store offline data on the local device as sand it to the master database as well. This is really helpful for data collection as people may not always have a stable internet connection when taking the survey.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

REDCap, being open source, does not have amazing customer support. Also, the surveys cannot be entirely customized according to needs. You cannot implement CSS for aesthetic improvement. Also, the types of fields available are not always sufficient. You cannot insert custom validation for any fields, and the default validation options provided for text fields isn't widely used.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

You should definitely use REDCap if you need real time reports with customized fields. This is very helpful for vast projects. If you want spectacular aesthetics, you should avoid REDCap as the default UI isn't really appealing and you cannot append CSS or Javascript codes to make changes to it. REDCap mobile application is very beneficial for offline as well as online data collection.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

REDCap is used for collecting survey data from customers. Complex branching logic can be implemented very easily with the drag and drop feature. REDCap Mobile application is widely used for data collection on an offline as well as online basis.

I like redcap well enough. It has a nice look to it, an ease of use for our participants and does a great job handling our data and storing it for us. we work in reasearch and input A LOT of information on a daily basis. Redcap helps make this process super simple.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

When it comes to creating a project, redcap is very hard to deal with. Coming into this project as someone who had never used redcap, I had to take several classes (i.e. pay for classes) in order to learn how to use every tool that is at our disposal. Also, sometimes redcap is not the best with make a project easy to create. There is a lot of time you need to spend navigating the program before going forward and creating your own project.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

I recommend you should take some classes to get to know this program before going live with it.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

REDCap not only stores our data, but it helps us organize it too. It is a great program once you get to know it

  ### 50. RedCap Not Making Me Red in the Face

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Health, Wellness and Fitness | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 19, 2018

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

There many options with this type of survey tool and with different clients requiring different options, it is helpful to have choices.
I like that Red Cap is one of the few open source tools that cares about data - specifically sensitivity and tries to protect your data. It's also free for not for profit groups, whcih we are so that is valuable. It allows us to customize the questions and thus, the answers we receive.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Setting up the tool may necessitate a call to IT or to someone who uses it often. It did take some time to get situated. It is fairly easy to use once you have it figured out. And you have to have a basic understanding of the types of questions and what types of answers you want - in order to effectively select the type of questions you want. If you aren't familiar with the types of questions, it can get difficult.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Take time to think about the questions you are asking so you know what tools to use. Talk to people who have used it to get a sense for what you might need to put thought into.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have a lot of groups who all want information and data in a different format. This allowed us to have them ask questions and glean what they needed without interfering with some of the more strategic business needs the larger organization required.
