The fact that it's constantly updating and getting better on a weekly or monthly basis is one of the absolute best things, especially that the updates are based on user feedback. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** The only downside I've found so far is that some important features are still missing, so there is still a little bit of limited functionality, however, with the updates, these limitations are removed frequently, and it's constantly getting better. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Keep experimenting and learning more. Sometimes there are some GD&T maneuvers that cannot work out with Onshape, so I end up using Notes as a workaround. I really wish external collaboration tools for Enterprise users was more advanced. I guess the best thing about Onshape is the pace at which they can add new features. If they don't already have a feature you're used to, chances are - in a few months they will, and it will be better than you're used to. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** The need to internet access. it's the only real downside. There is a leaning curve, but that's the price you pay for getting used to a much better system. Any missing feature that I would list here will probably have been added by the time you read this. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** seriously consider it. It has been left to third party apps, but I think should catered for by Onshape. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Get an Online demo and check it will meet any specific needs you have. We do need tools since our basic design input usually needs re-working or at least diagnostics to see what can be used and what not. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Main cad platform now, so almost all designs come in through OnShape (except some translations to be done outside of the system). The benefit is to be able to have a TEAM effectively workj on a project without the need to have servers, shared files, down-the-road updating, proof-checking on several workflows, etc. ### 11. I don't have to worry about installed versions or license servers, it just works. And every three weeks it gets updated with more features! **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Some features are still not implemented, but my wishlist gets shorter every 3 weeks. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Start a trial and test it, this is the future! **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** When you are in an early designing stage of you CAD project you can just start creating all kind of parts and don't worry about file names or part numbers. These can be added easily later without breaking the references in assembly and drawings. In other CAD software I used, it isn't that easy to rename parts later, sometimes you need special tools or you had to relink the references. With Onshape I can stay in the flow while designing and this is a huge time saver. ### 16. Development is based on user inputs and is blazing fast. An "In-program" chat and a follow-view mode give an outstanding experience for all involved parties. Really flat and fast learning curve for non CAD users involved in the design process. Now, it is easy to show projects and talk with the people from the outside of the company while seeing the same model, without any doubts about security. ### 17. The standard insert parts in the assembly plane should include standard pipe fittings. Also, It does not calculate cross sectional moments of inertia. Mass moments are important, but not the only needed geometric information. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** For most solid modeling applications, I solidly recommend OnShape. It is a complete package for the design and production of real products. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am designing powerful water treatment equipment used in a wide spectrum of industry from Oil & Gas Production to Municipal Wastewater. As a hobby, I use OnShape to design and plan my racing sailboat, for home construction. ### 18. We can instantly share ideas throughout the office and between engineering teams allowing us to get rapid feedback. We often make design changes instantly during meetings. Branching and Merging are powerful tools in Onshape that we have utilized to build up our machine configurations. We don't have to worry about duplicating part numbers or saving new copies of files when we want to try something new, we can branch into a new workspace and try out something new. If it works, we can instantly merge it back into our core design. If it doesn't, no harm, we can either delete that workspace, or just not use it anymore and mark it obsolete. Being able to access our CAD and work from any machine really helped us out during this pandemic. Our team was split up, but we didn't have any sort of adjustment period to working from home, because it was the same experience as designing in the office. We could hop on a group call, gather in the same document, and follow along with each other while we talked about the goals of the day. We didn't have to worry about remote connections to PDM, or if we were all working on the most up to date versions. We would not have been able to adapt as quickly as we did if we were not using Onshape. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** There are compromises that we have had to make while using Onshape. They are minimal, and are vastly outweighed by the gains. While performance is amazing, it can dip from time to time. This mainly happens in drawings, but larger documents can slow down if they fill up. It has never significantly impacted our work. There is a learning curve to using Onshape's Mate Connectors and Versioning. The workflow is different, and Onshape sort of bends you into a new way of thinking about your designs. The trade off here is it takes a little bit more time to learn the system, but you are rewarded with insanely stable and robust builds. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Try the professional trial and really give it a chance. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** The way we are able to automate repetitive tasks with Featurescript has saved us a lot of time. It has also helped with traceability and quality control. We can automate the creation of parts and tie them to our order numbers. They are instantly saved and searchable and we know that they arent going anywhere. We have also made a few custom features to streamline the integration of some off the shelf hardware into our models. Mainly bearings, heat set inserts for our 3d printed parts, and DIN rails. These features were created over the course of a few afternoons, and we now use them constantly. ### 19. This is how all tools should be in 2020 (or even from 2015). No installation - one just logs in from the office and works on the project, a quick fix is needed after office hours? Absolutely not a problem - just login from home. All the heavy calculations seem to be done on the server side so Onshape can be used with the cheapest hardware. And linking documents - I must mention - linking documents where different projects can be used as what I call submodules in different projects (with version control which blew my mind when I found that out). **What do you dislike about Onshape?** One could argue with the price, it's a high entry point for commercial use but considering that Onshape can be used on a 6 year old PC with free and safe Linux instead of paid Windows the price becomes less high. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am designing parts meant to be 3D printed. Entry level for someone with no CAD experience is very low, documentation of the features is very good and version control helps a lot. ### 21. Our business is entirely cloud-based. Why on earth would I spend a huge amount on traditional CAD software, workstations, server and PDM? OnShape has saved me so much damn money. I moved to Onshape from Solidworks. Anyone worth their salt as an engineer or product person can learn the feature mapping in a day (i.e. oh this feature is now called that name). I have been using it for several years and have found the feature set more than sufficient and the UX keeps improving. Basically, it's a great tool that is a joy to use, and it doesn't rely on a workstation to perform. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Sparse parts (repeated unit-cell structures) can be difficult to work with. This is also an issue with many other systems I have used. It could always be faster. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Jump in and try it for a project. Or are you scared of the future? I really do think it is a great product. I have watched other companies implement Solidworks and spend a ton of money on hardware and training. I haven't had to incur those costs, which means I can spend it on other things I want. Like beer. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** We design surgical instruments and implants. We use Onshape for design, to produce production drawings and product renderings. It is an intuitive product for new hires with little CAD experience. ### 25. There's no more issues with links between parts being broken. Being able to show anyone (co-workers, clients, support, etc.) what I'm working on by simply sharing a link is very convenient. Working on the same document with co-workers has never been easier, because I can easily see what changes they've made, compare one revision of a document to another, and all our files are stored in one place. The fact that every step is automatically saved, saves me a lot of anxiety that goes along with making mistakes (can view or revert back to any previous version/step) or forgetting to hit save. The tutorials, support articles, and Onshape forum made getting accustomed to Onshape very easy. I could easily find how to do something or use a certain tool on Onshape with a quick google search (they have step-by-step articles and videos for almost everything). Not to mention, their support has been quick to respond and very helpful the few times we've come across a software bug. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** There are some features that Solidworks has that are not yet available or fully developed on Onshape (e.g., shaded view on drawings), but this is something that is definitely improving (e.g., the recent addition of the exploded view feature). Another downside is that because it's a cloud solution, your ability to do work relies on your internet connection. If you become disconnected from your wifi or your wifi speeds are low, you might find working with Onshape very frustrating. This could however be mitigated by using an ethernet cable. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Transitioning from using one CAD software to another is always hard, but it can definitely be worth it. I can literally pull my models up on my phone. 3) Every single action is saved and accessible at any moment. 4) Collaborative - can work on the same model with multiple people. 5) So useful for sharing CAD with others without having to download the file and then attach it in an email. I can just send them a link. 6) With it being on the cloud we don't have to worry about our files being lost if the computer has an issue like getting stolen, lost, or damaged. 7) Data management is integrated in with the program. If you don't have internet out at your shop or if the internet goes down, you are left without any CAD. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** If you are a new engineering startup and looking for a CAD system, I would highly recommend using Onshape. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** We switched from Solidworks to Onshape. We saw an immediate benefit going to Onshape given that we no longer needed to purchase additional CAD workstations. Each employee could use his existing computer. Some of us had Macs and others PCs. It didn't matter. It worked the same on each one. Another big benefit was that we now had a way to manage all our files with our team. We are a small startup and we don't have resources dedicated to PDM or file management. With Onshape, we didn't need to create a PDM system or data management system. It was integrated in. If we had kept Solidworks, we would have needed to create an off line data management system to access all our CAD files and get them to link together for final assemblies. ### 36. I can work on the same file from home or from my office without having to worry about transferring files. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** OnShape is not great at dealing with mesh files and non-parametric models. Uploading an STL can often lead to failed meshes and it general, it's not great at converting meshes into solids (I'm fairly sure it can't do that). I also wish that OnShape had a more standard FES capability so we could do even simple stress tests. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Considering the hobby option, there is no reason to just try it. The shop personal also loved being empowered to be part of reviews and "follow me" mode when there was a touch question or issue. We have also implimented offical releases and this has helped eliminate almost all scrap from outdated / updated prints. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Double edged sword: I love that you can request a change and the program is frequently updated, but some of the "low hanging fruit" for requested changes do not always get implemented right away. This to me is more "first world problem" as there has never been a direct link to submit feedback to the development team before. **Recommendations to others considering Onshape:** Give it a try and get familiar with the PDM and version management. Our tipping point between CAD solutions was based on asking, " What CAD functionality do I really need and what functions can I get by without." The heavier weight on distribution and PDM with all the required CAD features lead us to OnShape. The desire to communicate fits very well. As of now the monthly cost is fair for what you are receiving. Software updates are not required which sometimes caused havoc in SW. Re thought out updates with new apps are regularly carried out. The clients are attentive. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** A few technologies have required to be introduced at system level (component setups) as well as on sketches (edit layouts). If you are operating an enterprise connected to technical CAD, that is cool. We can be found quick and easy. It operates with good connection on any device.
