There have been many technological innovations over the past 30 years and I've played with most of them. The problem with technology, even good technology designed for specific purposes, is that it draws attention to itself and therefore away from content. The saying "less is more" has never been truer than for course content delivery. My university used blackboard, then Moodle to try and stay up to date and give instructors and students lots of "stuff" to experiment with. When Mindmanager provided a way to publish maps that concept gave me the idea of using a course "map" rather than a course website (in my case based on Moodle or my own Weebly powered website). I never looked back. Students loved it. No extraneous material anywhere. No fancy screens. No menus to read through. Nothing to "figure out," just links to documents, assignments, online resources and our blog organized by simple categories. Another use for Mindmanager is keeping track of class conversations. I don't allow computers or phones in class (I know...quaint...)but one student does have a computer opened to a map which is used to take notes which I can edit and organize later and even index and create tags for various terms and concepts. Students then always have basic notes for review and we can easily go back to specific conversations concerning one subject or another. **What do you dislike about MindManager?** I could be wrong about this but there does not seem to be an easy way to back up maps stored online to a local drive. It would be ideal if we just opened a map and it was always saved both locally and online. They used to have a service that did a better job with maps stored on their own cloud service. **What problems is MindManager solving and how is that benefiting you?** In my case MindManager solved a major problem for me as an educator, how to deliver course content simply, quickly and in a form that is also simple and quick for students. ### 22. It is easy to attached documents, write in-depth notes or provide URL links that enhance the information provided, without being visually overwhelming. I also like that most aspects of designing the map are intuitive and can be picked up quickly by mostly any user. **What do you dislike about MindManager?** At times it is difficult to align text boxes in the exact location desired. The final visual impact of the map is very important and it can be tricky to align multiple call out boxes etc exactly as desired. The relationship arrow feature is very important to this program. I would like to see more quick and easy ways to design these areas. More control over their path on the map would lead to a cleaner and easier to read in some cases. When the relationship line go through other boxes on the way to its destination it can be confusing. **What problems is MindManager solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use mind manager to plan and execute my doctoral project. This includes demonstrating its benefit at local and national levels. I also demonstrate links to national initiatives and published literature. The map was also used to clearly identify facilitators and barriers to project completion. These were numbered and called out. The map was then shared in a peer review process. A peer was able to clearly see my own identified facilitators and barriers to add their own opinions. ### 23. I love how FAST the application is on my mac and that it is a native app. In a world of more web based applications, speed and functionality is usually sacrificed on the altar of making it available in the cloud. I don't care about these things. I need powerful desktop applications for my use in 2021-2030 and beyond so that I can work fast while not on the internet and in deep focus mode where I do not have access to the internet. I also love all of the icons and color that is available in the user interface so that I can quickly make decisions visually without having to sort through a bunch of black and white and grey icons that so many apps are switching to. I love, LOVE the legacy icons. What is great about these is that I can quickly link my brain to a colorful 3-D image instead of a boring flat UI icon that is more abstract. I am not a fan of the whole material design Google thing -- so the look and feel of the more colorful and creative interface elements actually help me do my work better. I am a very creative and out side of the box thinker and do not want an application like this that is very creative and associational to fall into the category of a "sequential/logical" app -- so the fact that for the most part this app embraces the creative and "right brained" style of thinking for working and doing is an exceptional enhancement to the life and blood of the kind of work and rhythms I employ in my working and execution on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. **What do you dislike about MindManager?** I was very disapointed when I was on a trip to Florida with my family. It was the first time traveling with my one year old daughter and she had never been on a plane before. Luckily, I had mindmanager installed on my laptop and I thought I would be able to spend lots of time visioning and brainstorming while my wife watched our sweet girl on the flight. Much to my disapointment, we got on the plane, I opened my laptop and mind manager could not connect to the internet, so I couldn't access ANY of my maps and I had no idea this was even a thing. I tried everything I could to get the data in my mind maps but because I wasn't online, the license could not be verified and I couldn't spend the time on that flight visioning and brainstorming with my wife. Luckily, our daughter did take a nap which gave me time to work on other apps like OmniFocus and OmniGraffle -- but this wasn't how I was planning on using my time in the air. Very sad about the lack of communication around how the license is verified and where/when and how it needs to be renewed. I dislike any of the "new" features that try to make things look sleek and modern. It is a great app and doesn't need to be thinned out with the flat look of things. I also dislike that I did not know about the license checkpoints with internet and I could not use mind manger on a plane because it couldn't see my license. Made me very sad to have a long plane ride and not be able to get on to mind manager since there was no internet on the flight. I do wish that the application had the ability to use the colored icons from a few versions ago that were much more visually appealing and had a better look. The switch to the flat UI look made things more difficult to find in the toolbar. I also was not a fan of the change to go to more of the microsoft ribbon look. This just seemed like a cheap rippoff instead of an original unique decision by the design team. I am very picky about my apps and how they look and feel. I wish that I could more easily find icons by doing word searches -- and find alll icons: clip art, illustrations and legacy icons. **Recommendations to others considering MindManager:** I recommend that people considering Mind Manager take the time and try it out for a few days and see how it can make their productivity much better. I first tried it as a trial and was so creative when I opened the application, wrote out some thoughts and found myself feeling less stressed and more in control. This is what an app like this can do - help you spend more time on what matters most and less time being overwhelmed and out of control. I am very thankful for David Allen for recommending this app so many years ago. **What problems is MindManager solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Mind Manager for a lot of things. Personal priotitizing, business ideas, agendas, workflows, org charts, and more. I pretty much create a mind map for everything that I am working on because it allows me to think more associationally and less sequentially. Dashboarding and linking my maps to other maps so I can see things from different levels. There are MANY links and apps that I use to solve problems. I can't always remember what they all are. But I can create a mind map that opens applications and opens web links to take me to where I need to go. I create new maps when new tools are implement in my workplace so I can stay sane and see all of the different areas we have and get into those applications quickly to do what I need to do. I can do a brain dump and then easily categorize things into smaller categories to see the big picture more clearly. ### 24. There are so many things you can do with this program. It is easy to create flow charts, work flows and visual depictions of processes. **What do you dislike about MindManager?** I use the Apple version of the program and it seems lacking compared to the windows side. Also it says it works on iPads but its not very well developed. **What problems is MindManager solving and how is that benefiting you?** MindManger helps my team visualize what we are are talking about and then who is responsible for what part of the process. The biggest benefit is that in order to create a visual representation of a process you have to really know the steps. Using MindManager helps me to think through all the steps so nothing is left out. I use it for Org charts as well which helps people know the organization better.
