What is MicroStation, and what problem is it built to solve?

MicroStation is a CAD drafting and design tool used to create precise 2D drawings and 3D models. It helps teams work with detailed engineering and infrastructure designs and coordinate drawings across disciplines.

What languages does MicroStation support?

MicroStation supports 13 languages: Chinese (Simplified), Czech, English, Finnish, French, and others.

What company sizes and industries is MicroStation the best fit for?

MicroStation’s strongest fit in practice is among small and mid-market teams, with a substantial enterprise presence as well. Its use clusters around engineering, design, construction, and infrastructure work.
  • Company sizes: Small Business and Mid-Market, with Enterprise teams also represented.
  • Industries: Civil Engineering is especially prominent, alongside Architecture & Planning, Construction, and Utilities.

How long does it take to implement MicroStation across a team?

Reported implementation times range from very quick starts to several months, with 1–3 months the most common reported range. Other teams describe shorter or longer rollouts, as shown below.
Time to go live Relative frequency
1–3 months Most common
Under 1 day to under 1 month Also reported
3–6 months Also reported
6–12 months Less common

What customer support options does MicroStation provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

MicroStation support is available through chat, FAQs and forums, and a knowledge base, with 24/7 live-representative support also offered. The support experience can be helpful and responsive when users need assistance, though some report slow or inconsistent replies to tickets.

What is the experience like for teams switching to MicroStation from another tool?

Moving to MicroStation from tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, and other CAD or design applications can bring a learning curve, particularly when commands and interface conventions differ. Users describe choosing it for its engineering and infrastructure workflows, design capabilities, and handling of complex work; once teams adapt, they can make use of its references, modeling, and drafting workflows. The transition may take adjustment for users accustomed to another CAD system.

What tools and platforms does MicroStation integrate with, and how do these integrations help users get more value from the product?

MicroStation offers 6 integrations, supporting connections across CAD, GIS, project collaboration, and spreadsheet workflows.
  • CAD and design: AutoCAD
  • GIS: Esri ArcGIS
  • Project collaboration and file management: ProjectWise
  • Spreadsheets and data exchange: Microsoft Excel
These connections can help teams exchange design files and data, work with references, and coordinate project information across disciplines.

What features or capabilities could make MicroStation even more useful?

MicroStation could be more approachable for new users and smoother in everyday drafting and coordination. Commonly requested improvements include:
  • Make the interface and tool organization more intuitive, so commands and settings are easier to find.
  • Add more guided onboarding, tutorials, and clear learning resources for new users.
  • Improve cross-platform file exchange and BIM coordination to reduce conversion work and compatibility friction.
  • Simplify and refine frequently used drafting controls, including command shortcuts and dimensioning workflows.

"Superior Drafting Tools Make MicroStation a Joy for Electrical Projects"
4.5/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

I enjoy drafting my electrical projects in MicroStation. I particularly like how drawing lines works, especially when compared to AutoCAD. The copy, rotate, and move options in MicroStation are also really good and, in my experience, better than those in AutoCAD. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

The layer properties are a bit more difficult to use compared to AutoCAD. Instead of using commands, everything is handled through buttons, which can make it challenging at times to find the right one. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great Shortcuts, but the UI and Customization Take Time to Get Used To"
3.5/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

I found that the commands and shortcuts are extremely good, and the ability to draw quickly is really important, especially in fast paced working environments. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

The colours and user interface are to take a bit of time to get used to, and it's not the easiest to customise or modify.

I think also, it did take a bit of time to get used to, it is also unfortunate that it seems to be dying out. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

4.5/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

Great tool for modelling infrastructure, which integrates well with mechanical CAD design tools. MicroStation is backed up by quality maintenance and support Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

Having to use MicroStation as separate tool to our Siemens NX mechanical CAD environment. There no out-of-the-box integration with Teamcenter our enterprise PLM environment Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful DWG-Friendly CAD, But Pricing Feels Steep"
3.5/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

Precision 2D/3D drawing, annotation, and advanced parametric modeling. Direct support for Autodesk's RealDWG so you can open, edit, and share DWG files directly Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

Annual subscriptions and perpetual licenses cost significantly more than entry-level CAD software. Moving from AutoCAD to MicroStation frustrates users because basic commands like selection and zooming behave differently. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Faster, More Efficient Drawing in MicroStation"
4/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

Drawing in MicroStation feels faster because of how its commands are designed to work. If you know your way around MicroStation and can move through it fast, you can draw more efficiently than in AutoCAD. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

MicroStation needs general optimization to make drawing and drafting commands smoother and more responsive. The Esc key should be used properly to unselect items or cancel an active command. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Robust Handling for Complex Projects, But Needs Standard Updates"
3.5/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

I really like MicroStation's handling capacity. It's crucial for dealing with massive complex infrastructure projects like the one I'm working on, Snowy 2.0. The robustness of the 3D modeling is impressive, delivering very high quality. Its interoperability is also a top feature, making it very user-friendly and simple for my needs. It enhances drafts and ensures that the application is straightforward for team use and project success. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

What doesn't work well is it's a little bit inconsistent towards the latest standards. For me, it's Australian standards, and sometimes the files are getting outdated. It's not clear on the training that it is supposed to have. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful Tool for Large Infrastructure Projects"
4/5
What do you like best about MicroStation?

I like MicroStation for its stability, precision, and flexibility, which are crucial in managing large-scale infrastructure drawings efficiently. Its ability to handle large and complex models without crashing is invaluable to me. The precision of MicroStation assures that my projects are accurate, and its flexibility allows for easy modifications. I appreciate the powerful referencing and level management tools that simplify the management of linked drawings, keeping my projects organized and efficient. The snapping tools in MicroStation ensure fast and accurate drafting, which is essential for my work. Its compatibility with DWG and IFC files makes collaboration seamless, especially when working with other platforms like AutoCAD and Revit. Overall, MicroStation’s stability and excellent graphic performance ensure that my experience working on infrastructure and structural design projects is smooth and productive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MicroStation?

I find MicroStation to be powerful but with a steep learning curve, which can be challenging for new users. The interface feels somewhat dated, and the BIM/cloud integration could be smoother. Specifically, I wish for a more modern and intuitive interface with simpler tool organization. Improved integration with BIM software like Revit and cloud platforms such as ProjectWise or ACC would greatly enhance collaboration and data exchange. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
