## MicroStation Reviews
  ### 1. Part 1 architectural experience of microstation

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2019

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

The software is very intuitive and the production of 2d drawings is simple in a way that Vectorworks is. the cross software compatibility is very good and the short cut system and variety of tools make the production of drawings efficient and looking beautiful.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

The number of tools is quite hard to get accustomed to and its BIM compatibility is perhaps weaker and needs developing to a higher level. It makes simultaneous interdisciplinary work quite challenging as DWG exports have to be used most of the time rather than having a live active group work file.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

It is a worthy alternative to AutoCAD and Vectorworks especially for those who like shortcuts and good sheet production

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

the ability to reference in drawings allows me to cross-reference older plans with ones that I am currently working on to discover any discrepancies between what has been built and what has been drawn, This allowed me to produce a retrospective planning pack to satisfy what had been built. I think this is achievable in other software but not as efficiently as Microstation.

  ### 2. Using this software for 30 years +

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Javier S. | Inspector, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2018

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

We are faced with a very interesting program due to its features compared to its closest competitor, AutoCAD. One of its advantages over other similar programs is that it works with very small file sizes, which helps us save space in our final result. On the other hand, the number of tools and functions is much more extensive, such as text styles, size styles, references, or line styles, allowing for a much more complete and easy use of these elements. It is also worth mentioning that the printing of the final work is much more reliable and configurable than that of any other CAD product. Additionally, it is important to highlight the ease of project creation and distribution, as well as the ability to open DGN files dating back to the 90s and other formats.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Mention as a negative point that some tools that exist in other CAD platforms should be implemented in MS. For example, we miss the ability to select an element and activate a tool that would then select similar objects based on type, level, color, etc. On the other hand, note that the tool for selecting by attributes, although pleasant and functional, requires too many mouse clicks, which makes it lose its charm.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

I recommend it for being a very powerful tool, offering numerous functionalities and great customization possibilities.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This program has allowed me to draw numerous engineering plans for the projects I work on. The multitude of tools it offers to customize the work has allowed me to achieve very professional finishes. It has allowed me to draw numerous hydraulic diagrams of water supply networks.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Really easy to use, friendly to other softwares

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Projection systems can be better. Hope to work better with Google Earth.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

You are going to love it! The software last forever! Started learning cadd software with another that started with "a". Then had a tough time switching over to Microstation but once you get used to it, you start to appreciate what it is setup this way.

What I find very useful are the ease of customizing your own commands with keyboards and functions keys, let's admit it, everyone wants a little something special for their own while still can work together a whole. Ability to rotate view with just one-button - function key, or keyboard, abosolutely blows my mind. Folks who heavy CADD users will definitely appreciate this feature. If you can save one or two mouse clicks with every commands, it's a life saving tools. One doesn't have to be a programmer to make their own custom commands, it's that easy.

I also use Inroads quite often. Having the ability open multiple boxes related to Inroads really helps than line by line by commands, again this is more on personal preferences. With the new Open Roads, it's definitely a game changer, a change for the better.

For some who prefer icons to work with, the setups are just as easy to pick from.

In all, it depends on what your clients prefer!

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ease of use

  ### 15. Great CAD product

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I love how customizable it is, how easy to use and how many shortcuts you can program.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I was constantly getting kicked out in the middle of detailing no matter what our IT team did. Very frustrating losing work.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ease of use, ability to share projects and break up project for different people to work on different parts.

  ### 17. MS is not for everyone but also great

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Almir S. | Design Manager, Civil Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Microstation runs pretty lite. Fast processing speed. I like where Microstation is headed with connect edition. Simplyfing it and making it user friendly. Panels are alinged more like where other softwares are headed. User set up and interface are huge improvement. Interface migration and customizations are improved. Custom toolboxes and pull down menus can be moved to display on ribbon. Keyboard mapping shortcuts have been replaced by new pop up menu. script files are easy to learn and make and can do enormous amounts of fast batch work over loads of files. Microstation canmake DTMs or 3d mesh and surfaces from points or contours

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Dialog boxes. There are too many to complate simple task. There are no tabs for sheets that are simple enough

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Get training, spend enough time learning it especially if you re working on other design softwares

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Road design, utility relocations. Helps learning another design software. Handles large data sets very well for a road desing project that require many dependencies. Referencing much better and faster which improves speed and delivery.

  ### 18. Simple and effective software for CAD drafting and modelling

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew S. | Architect, Architecture & Planning, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

The software has a simple Interface and meets our 2D CAD needs. The ability to turn on continuous saving of files is also useful, and referencing is simple. Other products I have used in the past don't offer this benefit. The general range of tools for drafting are good and cover most of the needs required. Customising the location of tool bars and docking of the primary tools is useful. Setting up of plot files to create drawings is simple and allows easy generation of drawings.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Sometimes the software can freeze/lag when exchanging between files or using multiple files at once. The latest version of powerdraft has some issues with plot files and with the drawing border not scaling or aligning when the drawing scale is changed. Some improvements could be made to some of the editing and modify tools such as trimming and extending, and also the fillet and chamfer tool. Autocad has a more simple and effective tool for this purpose. For some who have had little training the programme may appear a little overwhelming with all the options on show

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Worthwhile for those waiting simple tool for drafting and modelling

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The software gives our business a relatively easy platform across the office to generate CAD and drafting info and output required drawings. Whilst you can not work on the same file simultaneously you are able to easily move between files and work on a file which may be referenced into another one.

  ### 19. Great for Roadway Design

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anna N. | Roadway Design Engineer, PE, CFM, Civil Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

We use this for the majority of our roadway work, whether it be interstate or business routes. Also use it for drainage maps and hydraulics.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Can be difficult to figure out how to save your settings from session to session. Certain dialog boxes just can't be saved to the settings and have to be reloaded each time.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Roadway Design. Easy interface with other products like AutoCad and hec-ras/GEOHecras

  ### 20. user friendly

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

The line types do not transfer between other cad software.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

A little more front end knowledge about cad software but easier to operate once you have learned. better quality output than most other cad software.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Modeling and 2d rendering of schematics and details.

  ### 21. I do enjoy the MicroStation experience.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mario W. | Project Lead, Civil Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

How simple the functions can be. The ease of continuous usage of commands and simplicity if better than using AutoDesk at times

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Sometimes the functions can be a little too simple.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Nothing much that I can think of. Simply put, do not be discouraged by picking up Micro Station because you believe it may be difficult to grasp. Everything that it is capable of accomplishing is easy to grasp and there are always solutions to any problem you may stumble upon. One thing especially that I like about looking for solutions is that the Micro Station community is also familiar with the Auto CAD product. You can not only find answers as to how to accomplish a task but you can readily find information on the topic for you not being able to use that similar function as you had done in Auto CAD or that you will require approaching that solution from a different direction.

Ultimately, I find Micro Station to be a useful tool that is easy to pick up and user-friendly.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

All my Peel and Toronto projects require the use of MicroStation. A benefit of using MicroStation is that it is not too difficult to pick up. I had started using this software as a last minute inclusion into the project team with no real work experience prior and was easily able to pick up how to use it and complete the required work in the allotted time.

  ### 22. A useful tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 16, 2018

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I really enjoy the user interface. I came from an autocad background, and was used to a command based interface; after an adjustment period, I've actually grown to prefer microstation.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

It is occasionally glitchy. The shortcomings are few and far between, but every once and a while there are some inconvenient issues that force me to restart the program.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

If unfamiliar, watch tutorials to bring yourself up to speed.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Transportation Design - This tool helps to effectively design and layout plans for bridge and other transportation projects for a clean deliverable to the client.

very easy to use with custom toolbars and customizable shortcuts. no reason to memorize commands.
very easy learning curve and does everything you need it to do.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

updates aren't as common as competition. user interface is starting to get dates. some connect series are too microsoft word style, and make it difficult to get used to.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

creating construction sets for contractors, owners and village.

  ### 24. Experience with Microstation - A CAD software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** March 13, 2018

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

1) Microstation is best software for producing detail designs. I used microstation for production of Location Area Plans of railway signalling as per UK standards.
2) It delivers enough documentation and guides to help in learning the software.
3) It is light weight ,fast, easy to use and loads very quickly.
4) It helps to create high quality deliverable for the project.
5) The user interface.
6) The best thing about this is that throughout the whole life span of one file if any changes such as view, plot or if any rollback which was done on the file, we can easily check them and track them as well.
7) Microstation makes our work easy as it allows me to share my work with co- workers

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

1) I like it because its easy to use but it does not have keyboard shortcuts which for me makes it slower then AutoCAD.
2) The tool crashes sometimes.
3) Learning editing is bit complex.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Yes, I would like to recommend others to use this software. It is easy to grasp and the support team is very helpful. I recommend it to drawing lovers to switch your experience to 2D and 3D drawing and make possible everything that looks impossible.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Integrating Design platforms for metro trains, Trams and railway signalling.
I used microstation for production of Location Area Plans of railway signalling as per UK standards.

  ### 25. MicroStation CADD Engine - Simply The Best

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ed J. | Piping Application Especialist, Oil & Energy, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I used AutoCad before and wrote some applications too, but I like MicroStation better, it is easy to navigate and it's user friendly. You can join their Bentley Community SIG (Special Interest Group) Workshop, not to mention that you can also ask other users (if you are having some difficulties) through Bentley CONNECT Advisor.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I have a floating license and would like to add another user, however, the price is prohibitive, It's too expensive for me. I asked them if it's possible for me to use that licensing network, I got an answer but I would still have to clarify it some more. In short, it's really too expensive...

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Oil & Gas Piping, see www.tubero.com

  ### 26. A good resource for every project

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hakan D. | 3D Drafting, Utilities, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like that you can create complex 3D objects without much effort.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Needs to have more allowances to keep up with technology. Import of other 3D models, from other competing programs would make this program more powerful.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

MicroStation is a great tool, and can do many great things design wise; from manufacturing, modeling, to land base GIS.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using 3D models to see safety issues and clearance problems before we even get out to the field. It saves us time and money not sending people out to try and build something that either doesn't go together, or isn't safe and needs to be changed. The 3D models also double as training aids and construction schematics.

  ### 27. Versatile Platform

Microstation is an easy to use base for other software, Its menu layout is customizable with is very helpful. The new connect has allowed for larger file size which is needed as new tech become available

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

When it does have glitches with MDL applications it is hard to fix the problem. As it is hard to determine which software is having the problem. There are problems with customization of the new Ribbon Menu but the issues seem sporadic so not always easy to identify.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

The support that comes with the Microstation Software has always been helpful. The IT team is easy to work with.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Microstation allows for great manipulation of our lidar data

  ### 28. The microstation software is a very friendly and powerful for the development of my work

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Miguel P. | Ing. de Proyecto, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

What I like most about the software is the ribbon of the commands as well as the ease of editing previously drawn files in autocad and keeping the dwg files and thus not using hours to configure or adapt the drawing in the required work units as well as the use of blocks now cells in Microstation

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

What I do not like so much is the management of shading patterns since there is no visual library as autocad handles it, but you have to try previewing the shading one by one and that takes a little more time to do it

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Put on the Bentley page more tutorials in Spanish in the basic use of microstation

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The basic problem that we have solved is the learning time, since it has been very short since the environment is quite friendly and you have not allowed to edit the plans in a timely manner.

  ### 29. Microstation for Roadway Design and Drafting

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan Y. | In-Roads Practice Lead / Roadway Designer, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Light and fast (compared to AutoCAD)
Quick load times
Able to handle large infrastructure projects without slowing down.
Power reference (xref) abilities
Power geometry tools for creating accurate and "self-healing" roadway layouts
3D visualization tools built in
Civil Cells = Dynamic blocks from AutoCAD on steroids.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Ribbon menu system is cumbersome
No default keyboard shortcuts making switching between tools slow and cumbersome
Use the AutoCAD colour table, it has more colours, better colours, and makes working with the rest of the world easier.
Annotative text/dimensions setup is useless for roadway drawings. Scale changes of 1:1000 to 1:500 are too large for Microstation's implementation to work. AutoCAD is great for this.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

If you are working on large complex projects, Microstation is the better overall product in comparison with Autodesk. I say this as a user of both. However, it is not perfect and there are plenty of great features in AutoCAD that are not present here. I just feel that the pros outweigh the cons, in favour of Microstation.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using Microstation as a drafting tool for InRoads/OpenRoads designed projects. For roadway drafting it is more robust and a better overall package. For bridge structural drafting I prefer AutoCAD.

  ### 30. My go to software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Janko B. | Designer, Civil Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Very easy to use and its quick to get a design going without needing to do any setup. Its easy to set up what you need and there is a lot of customization that can be added in the background. The support that was have received in the past when using first gen of any release is very good.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

There are a bunch of bugs that you need to find ways to work around. This although annoying will just become part of the workflow. The other thing is that although they added the ability to press certain keys to get to menus quickly, its still lags quite a bit behind AutoCAD. If they can get that to work as smoothly, there would be no reason to use AutoCAD at all.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

I came from AutoCAD and was not impressed with Microstation at first. Was forced to give it a shot and now I use MS even when we are using AutoCAD for certain things as its just better at it.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Getting a 3D design going from scratch is very easy and great for proposals. In our otginazation there isn't really a problem that we are trying to solve by using this software. We have been using it for longer than I have been around with the company and with good results. When things don't work, Bentley is always willing to lend a hand and find a good solution to the issue.

  ### 31. MicroStation collaboration

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eduardo M. | CAD Analyst, Government Administration, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

The software is extremely flexible as a design tool in multiple disciplines. This mixed environment can coexist using reference files from one design to another. Since MicroStation immediately writes to the design file, you can create a collaborative design environment where each user can immediately see design changes that effect aspects of their portion of the project. MicroStation also utilizes 2D, 3D, surface and solids modeling, parametric modeling as well as visualization, animation and material assignments within the core product without buying expensive add on products.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I would prefer not needing to assign working unit resolution to seed file templates. This resolution can effect the successful completion of certain 3D.middling operations.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Very powerful software

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Roadway design, utilities layouts, multi discipline design files. The coexistence of different department designs for a one project feel without dealing with out of date changes. A more dynamic not static project environment.

  ### 32. Great CAD software

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like the typical ease of use of the program. Once you pick up the basics, it's very easy to maneuver and use Microstation. It's also very simple to share work with others, as long as your files are organized well.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Sometimes the program can easily become unresponsive. Also, it can be difficult at times to find quick solutions to seemingly simple issues. The smaller issues can take a lot of time to fix.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Make sure that you have a good understanding of the basics before moving on to more difficult Microstation work. Figure out how to solve smaller issues that you may run into before they become a recurring problem. Stay organized

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating horizontal alignment plans effectively. Microstation is great because we can use templates that we already have, and incorporate shape files, rasters, and previous CAD files to make files that present very well.

  ### 33. Great standard for many purposes

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2018

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like the compatibility between many local firms in my area all using microstation. When using microstation, I'm able to ask many people in the agency for assistance as it is so commonplace. Many tutorials are available as well because the program is standard in many industries.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I dislike the sometimes antiquated feel of the program. It feels as though not all aspects of the program are given the sleek feel that many programs have. It may also be good to make it easier for IT departments to diagnose issues.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

It may be your only option, but compare it to others in the field to find what you're comfortable with.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are designing and applying different layers to designs from many sections of the company. Mapping and hatching are common.

  ### 34. Substation Designer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jake L. | Designer, Design, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Modeling Substations in 3D.
The 3D environment in microstation is incredible. I am able to put a substation together within days instead of weeks.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

that every project is not in 3D. I have worked extensively in the 2D world. and totally prefer the 3D world

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Designing Substations the critical issue is spacing. if you put things too close together you will see sparks.
So in modeling the Substation in 3D we are able to know in the real world how far things are apart. it is not a guess it is real.
Benefits include cost savings.

  ### 35. Best software for large organizations

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michael M. | Owner, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Scalability for large organizations and small businesses alike. The ability to use a "cached" license if the license server is unavailable. I also like the small design file size in relation to competitors files.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Some missing tools that competitors offer such as selecting objects that are similar to what is currently selected.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Switching platforms is difficult and nearly impossible with a closed mind.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to create, edit, and print different file types has proven to be very beneficial.

  ### 36. Clean gui

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lina Monica A. | BIM Specialist , Transportation/Trucking/Railroad, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 24, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Using ribbon feature for the functions streamline with other softwares in the market. Clean gui though need time to figure out and get used to. However for those who are used to shortcut keys will not be affected that much and will pick up speed to exploring other functions.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Upon starting the dashboard can be quite confusing and daunting. Would help to have the options of where the project files or work set in one page will help.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Microstation is like android. You just need to figure out the how and where and you're good to go.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Printing for 3d pdf with data instances shown. Exporting geometric data like volume and area and then importing then into aecosim data instances.

  ### 37. It's been good overall

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 02, 2018

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

It is pretty intuitive to get drawings produced and the file format doesn't keep changing so there aren't any issues with backwards compatibility.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Changing the way workspaces work in the newest edition. There is a lot of effort just to try and figure out what changes to make to existing workspaces to get them to work in the connect edition.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

It is worth the shot. The biggest feature is that the file format doesnt change (hasnt changed since early 2000's) so you dont need to worry about the version installed on your users machines. Every version from V8i will work your dgn files without a problem.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows us to get drawings out the door in a timely fashion and we don't need to worry about what version of MS our users are using; i.e. they don't have to be on the same version to be able to get their work out.

  ### 38. Good interface, lots of features, but could have some improvements.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mining & Metals | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 07, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I primarily use the Bentley Microstation Structural XM software. Its interface is easy to use and its database is loaded with all of the structural members I need to create an accurate representation of the structure I am designing.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I don't like that this software does not easily convert over to other CAD programs as many of our clients use other programs such as AutoCAD and thus I am forced to know both programs.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Bentley has a great suite of products available that they are constantly upgrading and improving. The products do differ in how they are laid out and each take some time to learn. If you are switching over from one CAD program to Microstation there would be some real adjustment time for your team as it differs from many of the other programs out there. As previously noted the interface is easy to use and has some good features for 3D modeling. I have only been using it for a year but I feel capable and comfortable with the software. It is not, however, my primary job and I do not use it everyday.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My company uses Microstation and other Bentley products to model and create engineered drawings for mines. As previously noted its interface is easy to use which speeds up the process of creating models and cutting drawings. Personally, I like this product as it allows me to quickly and easily visualize what a design might look like/how it may change an area. It also allows me to do quick cost estimates for steel and see if I have any clashing members.

  ### 39. Relatively New Microstation User

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Microstation offers some features that ACAD does not. For example, if I need to number parking spaces, it has the ability to number them automatically with a simple click. I've used that function alot in my job. I also like the way I can use reference files and can easily click between the reference file and the active file to make changes.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I don't think Microstation is very user friendly. I have been a long time ACAD user and for the last year and a half have been using Microstation at my new job. While there are alot of similarities, there are also alot of differences. Some functions I like better in ACAD, some I like better in Microstation.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

It is a powerful program but you need to take the time to learn it.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm not sure I'm solving problems. I mostly use Microstation to draw floorplans and occasionally elevations and site plans and parking lots.

  ### 40. Powerful, easy to use software

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Neal S. | Project Engineer, Civil Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like its stability to view large files. It has good editing capabilities and can integrate with many visual programs.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

The slow nature of having large files referenced together.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Use the newest version and see what other packages you will be using on top to make your decision if its worth going Microstation or AutoDesk

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am creating roadway plans.

  ### 41. MicroStation....well not AutoCAD

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aric S. | Computer Aided Design Technician, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

There are some features and commands that i like more then Autodesk products. Simple moving is nice because you can have to object you initially selected move, place and move again until you exit out command without have to keep selecting line work over and over. I have to say that the ability like i stated above being able to keep your selection selected while able to switch and change command. Editing any type of dimension and text is crazy very easy too.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

The equivalent to Osnap. I do not like how microstation uses the object snapping to much clicking back and forth to get the desired snap. I have used Autocad exclusively and have been working with microstation for about a yr now there are many differences but not all good and bad. I do kind of understand why, but there is no good way to have a seamless conversion between other drafting programs such as AutoCAD.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

It is a solid drafting program if you are use to a certain program and now you have switched or are going back and forth between this and another program commands will get mixed up, options and commands have the same functions but how you get there are completely different. It will take some time to understand and use it efficiently but with time you will know it as well as anything else.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

not really solving any business problems.

  ### 42. Transportation Engineer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like that I can customize the menu so that I can use my CLASSIC setups.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Sometimes it is difficult to find the correct systems variable to change. Maybe a plain yes no toggle instead of 0 or 1 or whatever.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Compare it to Autodesk Civil3D and you will see that PowerGeoPak and Microstation are easier to use. The main advantage is the Design and Computation Manager in PowerGeoPak. This tool is used to quantify and tabulate roadway quantities for construction. Autodesk does not have any such too. FDOT was forced to create a program from scratch to do this work in Civil3D.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Preparation of Highway Construction Drawings.

  ### 43. Not a fan

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Military | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like how the software overall is setup but there are too many issues with using customer standards. Per my employer, we are not allowed to use the out of the box standard that Bentley comes with and there for run into issues time and time again.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Per my employer, we are not allowed to use the out of the box standard that Bentley comes with and there for run into issues time and time again. We work with Bentley to have the standards working correctly but many times they fail to do so.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating design sets and computing quantities are the two biggest uses.

  ### 44. Microstation

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brooke P. | Civil Engineer, Civil Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 05, 2018

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like being able to check the files that I'm working with out so no one else makes edits while I'm working on it.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

It crashes randomly. Not sure if it's bc of the program, the large datasets or my computer.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Civil engineering design work to include waterways channels.

  ### 45. The easiest and fastest design software with a full set of integration products

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan M. | Cadd Manager / Senior Engineering Tech, Civil Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

The easy of use and full capabilities that makes this a great package for all kinds of design work.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

There are almost too many options at times which can make it confusing to teach to new users.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use it for Civil design to layout roadways, water lines and sewer lines. A big benefit is the integration with the DOT's for easy of submittals.

  ### 46. Ustation Review

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brandon L. | Contract Worker, Government Relations, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Compression ratio of Files,Easily Configured,Easy to Use.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Nothing with the product itself, but support seems to be a little lacking at times. It could be a few days before we even have someone acknowledge our tickets and sometimes it could be in a few minutes. more consistency in this area would be nice.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

If you are doing basic drafting this is the package for you, but if you're doing specialized engineering then look into one of their other packages

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The nice thing is everyone working in the same format so that information is passed effortlessly.

  ### 47. Microstation for Design

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tatiana S. | Assistant Civil Engineer, Transportation/Trucking/Railroad, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2018

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Saeed D. | Mechanical Engineer (Substation Design), Design, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I really like the interface for MicroStation compared to AutoCAD. You can easily use multiple screens to show different views of the area that you're working on. While the Key-in commands from AutoCAD are a nice feature, it is just a matter of time/consistent usage before you can comfortably navigate thru commands in MicroStation.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

It is somewhat difficult to assemble 3D parts in regard to mating and alignment. While MicroStation is a great application for 2D Civil and Electrical drawings, it is not the best tool for 3D Mechanical assemblies.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Implement a better way to assemble 3D parts and sub-assemblies

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

At my current position, I design and calculate facility ratings for substations with respect to allowable conductor ampacity. MicroStation's platform is easy to learn, and even though I am an engineer not a designer, I was able to quickly learn how to efficiently use it to revise designs.

  ### 50. Great user-friendly software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Transportation/Trucking/Railroad | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

The user interface. All tools are easily accessible without having to dig around and find them. I've long used microstation for estimating and it has been an invaluable tool

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Nothing, I have yet to run into an issue with microstation

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Take trainings available. Microstation can seem daunting at first but is a really excellent tool

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use microstation for engineering drawings and estimating. Microstation just seems to me to be the most user friendly cad software and is also great for getting some quick takeoffs when working in construction
