  ### 2. The Best Drainage Software

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** TARAKESWARA RAO V. | Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 21, 2020

**What do you like best about MicroDrainage?**

I have been using the Windes software from last 3years, It's an amazing experience. Interface is very much User-friendly and it's reduce alot of time in laying and analyzing the storm networks. Earlier I felt it would be great if there is a Civil 3D output, but in 2019 version it is incorporated. I am very much happy after seeing that option.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

It would be very much helpful to the designers if the Network details tab can be of excel sheet, i.e If we want to change the IL of any pipe we need to calculate everything outside and need to provide the level and for subsequent pipes also. So, if it is of excel format we can perform copy and past operations. Which reduces alot of time for the users.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroDrainage:**

Very much user friendly, Easy to build Storm networks and accurate results compared to other softwares. We can see all the technical queries using help.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have modelled Storm water network for SMP M4, J3-J8.
Designed Storm water network for HS2 Highway diversions like Oxford Road, Radstone road etc...,
Used SUDS to design Detention Ponds, Retention Ponds and Swales
Used Flow control options to attenuate the flows

  ### 3. Ease of using MicroDrainage Software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jayvin S. | Senior Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 05, 2020

**What do you like best about MicroDrainage?**

MicroDrainage is a user-friendly and highly interactive platform which is essential for developing a wide range of drainage engineering solutions to meet the statutory requirements. The platform allows me to plug-in with Civil 3D software which helps me to use different levels of information from various disciplines and develop viable solutions in a short time. The software had various inbuilt tools which become one-stop solutions for varying levels of calculations. The software results are generally accepted by statutory authorities, which gives me the confidence for the accuracy of results produced by its engine.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

1. Although the software can generate results for crossing and conflicts between the network; however, the software cannot generate the combined long-sections for various networks located within a single file. For this, I rely on Civil 3D software or PDS software to generate combined long-sections say of foul and stormwater networks to assess whether the networks are proposed within the same plane or not.
2. The software cannot plot the curved pipes while importing model designs in Civil 3D. This led to manual work of remodelling of curved pipes in Civil 3D which is not only time consuming but also disconnects the 3D models from the designs. I believe, if the software could plot the curved pipes then it could potentially save the time of designers in producing BIM compatible models and checking of modelling work.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroDrainage:**

The benefits of MicroDrainage outweighs other software which is available in the market. The software is user-friendly, interactive, and highly graphical which helps the designer to make an informed decision while developing designs. It is a one-stop solution for different levels of design as it has various inbuilt tools to generate calculations as per one's need. The software is compatible with other platforms such as Civil 3D which could be used to develop layout drawings and 3D BIM model within no time.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using MicroDrainage to develop conceptual to detailed drainage strategies. The software has multiple functions which allow me to generate designs, layout drawings, and 3D models for federated BIM models.

-Drawnet (Addon option to Civil 3D) is very helpful in working simultaneously with Civil 3D software.
- Easy to make out where the error has been occurred.
- Various inbuilt sections viz Rectangular, trapezoidal, circular etc are easy to import and calculate.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

- Exporting pipe network into Autodesk Civil 3D is not easy.
- Importing 3D surface and 3 Dimensional checking is not easy.
- Drawing catchment areas for network is repetative and time consuming. Making changes to drawn area is not easy.
- After simulation it creates separate MDX files for results. if anyone is opens the model later again they need to run and simulate to see the results.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- I am preparing storm network model for Highway works.
- MicroDrainge made my job easier in calculations and network modelling as per standards.
- Providing online and offline control to restrict the flow into pipes/Attenuation.

  ### 5. User friendly interface and replicates the actual scenario to a greater extend. Well recommended.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Libu K. | Assistant Engineer, Highways & Drainage,UK, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 05, 2020

**What do you like best about MicroDrainage?**

Replicates the actual scenario to a greater extend. Advantage is that the toolkits associated will make the modelling tasks more easier for you. User-friendly, well defined, and self explanatory. 3D visualisation helps us understand what is happening inside the pipes and chamber network for different events, which helps us take decisions easier during the further modelling stages. Efficient compared to other modelling softwares that used before. CAD compliance helps us build BIM models efficiency. MD Suds makes most of the modelling easier. Other modules are provided for calculating Greenfield flowrates using different methods, for volume calculations etc.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

Providing a bit more description about providing flow control chambers in help will be better. Will be helpful if we can connect twin outgoing pipes from the same chamber to understand scenarios which shows filter drains above carrier drains

**Recommendations to others considering MicroDrainage:**

Being user friendly and replication of actual scenarios are the best quality a software can provide and WINDES provides that.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mostly working on highway drainage designs and modelling. Analysis of the results based on different events based on different levels of critical scenarios is a benefit, which helps in a coordinated design of network for different events. I have used it for adoptable as well as private drainage networks.

  ### 6. Experience with MicroDrainage

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rama Sastry Y. | Assistant Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 05, 2020

**What do you like best about MicroDrainage?**

MicroDrainage lets the user to skip the hydrology calculations part as the rainfall is completely embedded in the software and its just the location within the UK that the user must know to proceed with the design. Also the design criteria pane helps the users to provide all the inputs in a single window without juggling around much. The help/user guide will provide a detailed overview of the tool and the search option is very dynamic as it lets the user to dive into the section directly and provide great understanding on how the tool behaves.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

There are couple of things I want to draw out here and hopes it reaches Innovyze
1. While modelling storage structures (eg; detention ponds) if the user selects the node as a Manhole instead of a junction, the tool assigns the dia of the manhole as 10m without any pop-up or warning (although a warning appears when we go for simulation), and during simulation MicroDrainage routes the flows through the 10m Dia manhole before they enter the basin, and as the manhole being 10m is dia has huge storage which is double counted by MicroDrainage during simulation and there is huge risk of underestimating the actual storage volume required or to be executed in site. So I feel the tool shouldn't allow the user to model the storage structures with a Manhole or should make amendment so that the tool pushes a warning about the dia of the manhole being assigned for the manhole in which storage is modelled. This will alarm the user and correct the inputs accordingly.
2. Once a catchment assigned to a node/manhole can't be reassigned to any other node, and it has to be removed and re delineated before one can assign it to another node. My feeling is that there should be flexibility to quickly assign a catchment from one node to another.
3. Also when a node is being removed, no warning pops up about the removal of the catchment assigned to the node (this becomes an issue when the areas are turned off) and user might end up deleting the area assigned to that particular node. It would be great if there is a pop-up that warns the user about the risk (deleting area) factor associated with it.
4. From my experience what I observed is that MicroDrainage has a bizarre way of modelling pumps. Upon simulation I have observed a great mathematical instability in the model (understood after checking the hydrographs) and the user guide doesn't have much on design of pumps neither does the website. So I feel Innovyze should provide some basic training videos in its website on MicroDrainage which would be really helpful for rookies to get a basic understanding of the tool.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroDrainage:**

MicroDrainage is an excellent tool for analysis of storm water drainage networks and provides integration with products of Bentley and AutoDesk which makes the production of 3D models and drawings really simple. The help guide/user guide that comes along with the MicroDrainage is just amazing as it provides a great understanding for a rookie and helps to work smoothly. The flood flow analysis comes in as an added advantage which helps to analyze the behavior of storm water drainage networks in case of higher events and employee relevant mitigation measures. Source control and MDSuDS are in compliance with the Environmental agency guidelines which helps the user to proceed with the design
of the drainage networks directly if the project location is within the UK. So overall MicroDrainage is an excellent tool which helps the users to analyze and provide solutions for Storm water drainage problems for urban developments and linear construction projects where interception, collection, attenuation and disposal has a great importance. I have been using MicroDrainage in my day to day professional career from last 18 months working on Detailed Design of Drainage for East West Rail Phase-2, Preliminary Design for A40 in wales.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Storm water Drainage Networks for Linear construction projects (Highways & Railways). The important benefits of MicroDrainage is the amount of manual calculations it reduces for analysis, design and cost estimating for drainage networks. It is a complete package using which all the tasks involved in storm water drainage design can be delivered right from the scratch. By integrating with modelling software like Civil-3D the production of 3D models and drawings has become really effective and efficient as the number of human errors decrease as everything can be be directly imported from MicroDrainage.

**What do you like best about MicroDrainage?**

The best is the user friendly interface of the MicroDrainage and its ability to integrate with the CAD software's helping the designers to design with their own standards. one of the best is the automatically size drainage networks as well as designing of the stormwater and foul water systems graphically.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

The major disadvantage I felt is that when we load big files as well as when we gets an error MicroDrainage will crash in between with out any prior notification which make its really difficult to deal sometimes and the visual effects can be improved which will give more clarity as well as clear cut ideas to the users.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroDrainage:**

The friendly user interface which will even help the beginners to work with an ease without feeling this is something new. As a hydraulic modeler MicroDrainage helps to design, audit and model integrated sustainable drainage systems which inturn results in efficiently managed cost benefit model. If you are in search of a good software to SUDs you got one !.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The easy import of CAD and GIS data which will reduce the time of the project. When we are in short of Infoworks ICM license we can use the MicroDrainage to understand how much volume of water is required for a pond with this much incoming water from a particular return period rain and apply that volume and level to our solutions instead of waiting for the license.

**What do you like best about MicroDrainage?**

Micro Drainage (Windes) is a great program for designing integrated drainage solutions. The program is able to design pipe networks, storage facilities and has flood modelling capabilities. It integrates well with AutoCAD and can output pipe schedules and long sections making it ideal for design on construction projects.

**What do you dislike about MicroDrainage?**

The program can become frustrating when making changes to pipe networks which can cause a bit of re-work and it would be ideal to be able to import information via a spreadsheet format into the program to save set up time.

**What problems is MicroDrainage solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am currently using Micro Drainage for highway drainage design and it has proved useful to be able to input the full drainage solution (rainfall, pipe networks and storage facilities) into the one program to produce a more accurate design. The program also has an interface with AutoCAD and can import surfaces from CIvil3D which makes designing the drainage easier.
