I particularly like Matomo for its strong privacy controls, complete ownership of my analytics data, and its detailed reporting. I also appreciate that it’s open source and highly customisable, and that it brings features like session recordings, heatmaps, and conversion tracking together in one platform. I find Matomo’s interface less intuitive and more complex to navigate than Google Analytics. I’ve also seen others mention that the setup and configuration can require some technical knowledge, and that certain advanced features or add-ons can make it more expensive. We have been using this platform for over a decade and actually started back when it was still called Piwik. It is definitely one of the best tools for anyone who cares about data ownership and privacy. We spent many years hosting it ourselves on our own servers which gave us total control over the setup. Recently we switched to the cloud based version and it has been great because it takes away all the technical maintenance and server management. The tracking is very accurate and we love that there is no data sampling so we always see the real numbers.

The UI is excellent and honestly much better and more intuitive than Google Analytics. We also found that the integration is very nice even with Angular since it supports Google Tag Manager. The performance is very solid and everything loads quickly. We only had to use the support team one time and the experience was fine because they were helpful and resolved our question. The biggest downside for us has been the pricing structure on the cloud version. It feels quite expensive compared to other options especially when you are a smaller business. Another major frustration is that on the specific package we are using you can only add 3 websites. This limit feels very restrictive and it would be much better if there was more flexibility to add a few more sites without having to jump to a much higher price tier. It’s very easy to sort through and view data. It feels like a big improvement over other data collection platforms, especially with the ability to customise reports and customer journeys in a straightforward way. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Performance is average, with high demands on the server. There is room for improvement in data processing speed, resource usage, and task stability. Report generation takes a long time, high resource consumption causes lag, task stability is poor, and data processing processes hang after activating plugins, with memory leaks in archiving tasks. Initial setup poses a certain barrier for beginners, as server configuration parameters and database operations are difficult to understand.
