## About Material Security
Material Security is an automated detection and response toolkit for Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, combining email security, data security, identity protection, and configuration management in a single platform. Material streamlines SecOps by unifying detections and automating remediations across your cloud workspace in one platform that gives you unprecedented visibility and control. Material stops sophisticated attacks, secures sensitive data in files and mailboxes, detects and contains account takeovers, and reduces risk across your environment. Your cloud workspace isn’t just another app. It's critical infrastructure - home to your people, content, and communications — and requires dedicated protection. Material was founded in response to persistent, sophisticated attacks that continue to demonstrate that disparate point solutions for inbound attacks, compromised accounts, and leakage of sensitive content are insufficient to secure against the threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences inherent to the productivity suite. We are backed by Andreesen Horowitz and protect the world’s fastest-growing and agile companies like Figma, Mars, DoorDash, Lyft, MassMutual and more. Learn more at https://material.security/

## Material Security Reviews
  ### 1. Honestly, a must-have if your company runs on Google Workspace

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 25, 2026

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

The biggest win for me was the setup. It connects straight via API, so I didn’t have to mess around with MX records or risk breaking our email flow. It just sits on top of Google and does its thing.

I’m also a big fan of the "Speed Bump" feature. If someone tries to open an old email that has sensitive info or attachments in it, it pops up an MFA prompt. It gives me a lot of peace of mind knowing that even if a user's Google account gets breached, a hacker can't just dump and steal years of archived data.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I cannot think of any specific dislikes for Material Security.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Employees treat Gmail like an infinite filing cabinet for passwords, PII, and financial stuff. Material completely fixes that "sitting duck" data problem. It also turns phishing cleanup from a tedious, manual search inside the Google Admin console into a 30-second task.

  ### 2. Effective Phishing Protection with Exceptional Support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 24, 2026

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I like the historic email lookbacks that Material Security offers, which aids in insider threat investigations, and the feasibility of email threat protection. The support team is also a highlight for me, as they are extremely hands-on and eager to listen to feedback. They actually implement our feature requests, and we see noticeable changes in the platform and enjoy high engagement with the team, making the process seamless.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I do notice a number of small bugs after feature releases. They're mostly UI bugs that affect the user experience, like incorrect formatting of modules or buttons missing after an update. Material can work to ensure a more thorough QA process.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Material Security allows for historic email lookbacks beyond 30 days, aiding in insider threat investigations. It provides ease of email threat protection, and the support team is proactive in implementing user feedback.

  ### 3. Google workspace security heroes

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 17, 2026

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Material Security understands Google Workspace well. Their expansion from Gmail to Google Drive, OAuth, and their overall roadmap focus on Google Workspace makes me think of them as the EDR like layer for the enterprise Google ecosystem.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

Traditional difference between an inline email security platform vs Material which is api driven platform apply. If you want to inspect every email before it even lands in gmail, this may not be the solution for you.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Email Security

  ### 4. Low effort way to sidestep risk in multiple areas...

**Reviewed by:** Thomas B. | Vice President, Information Security, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I like that Material Security can provide real-time remediation for phishing attempts and helps find and cluster similar messages across the organization automatically. This makes it easier for the security team to quickly and efficiently protect the organization without manually conducting investigations. Additionally, the "report suspicious message" feature is simple for users to understand and use, which helps to empower them to help protect the organization.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I cannot think of any specific dislikes for Material Security.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Material Security is solving the problem of time-consuming and manual processes for addressing phishing attempts and protecting sensitive data in employee inboxes. The security team can quickly and efficiently protect the organization by providing real-time remediation and automatic clustering without needing to conduct investigations manually. Additionally, the "report suspicious message" feature is simple for users to understand and use, which helps to empower them to help protect the organization. Overall, Material Security helps to save time and resources for the security team and makes the organization more secure.

  ### 5. Protecting the Productivity Suite

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Erik W. | Board Member - CSA Detroit Chapter - President, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Material is much more than another email protection tool. They empower organizations to gain visibility into and protect an expanding footprint across the major productivity suite providers. This gives us the power we need to expedite spotting and addressing evolving risks.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

Nothing, the Material Security team has done an exceptional job executing on our feedback and requests.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

  ### 6. Strong, Reliable Security Solution

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Insurance | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 10, 2025

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Material Security provides solid protection with easy-to-use features that ensure peace of mind.
The intuitive interface and seamless integration with existing systems make Material Security incredibly user-friendly. The robust protection it offers against phishing and account hijacking is top-notch.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

The platform’s initial setup can be a bit overwhelming for users who aren’t very tech-savvy. Additionally, some advanced features require additional configuration that might not be as intuitive for beginners.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps us mitigate the risk of security breaches, ensuring compliance with industry standards for data protection. By preventing unauthorized access, it protects both our internal communications and our client data, reducing the potential for financial losses or reputational damage. Additionally, the solution scales with our business, keeping us secure as we grow without requiring significant resources or time to manage.

  ### 7. Remarkably useful to Analysts and Leaders

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Callie C. | Global SOC/Threat Operations Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 10, 2025

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I like the ability to see the actions users have taken on the emails as well as the metric visuals make it easy to get buy in and understanding from leadership on current state.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

The ticketing dashboard needs work and the visuals should be interactive to click on it to get more information.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Material is giving us the critical visibility we need to ensure coverage and protective measure in our environment.

  ### 8. No Competition

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 10, 2024

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

They treat Google Workspace as a first-party partner. The tools don't just integrate "good enough" to sell the product as an afterthought like most products in this category.

The support is second-to-none. And there really isn't anything else out there that matches the capability of this product. There may be some teething issues for very large Enterprise orgs, but for anyone under 5000 employees - this is a no-brainer.

I use it every day.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

In some cases features are released not as polished as I'd like, but to be honest - they iterate so fast on the UX and the product itself, that really hasn't been a major concern of mine.

The other thing I noticed when comparing them to other vendors is sometimes the configuration side could be a bit better explained. However for most folks who've configured similar products, this also isn't a major concern.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

There is a mammoth amount of DLP tools out there, none really address the Google product suite all that well. Google's own controls leave a lot to be desired, and applying common-sense workflows on top of it really has made it so much easier to administrate. I'd pretty much consider Material a mandatory product for any Enterprise serious about security in their Google Workspace environment.

  ### 9. Modern Security with Material Security

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Erick Vincent Steve G. | IT Support I, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 21, 2024

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

What I like about Material Scurity is its focus on post compromise data protection, contextual security measures, and seamless integration with cloud platforms.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I really like everything about Material Security, it would be more versatile if the focus were not just on cloud-based platforms.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Material Security solves the problem of post compromise data protection in cloud email security.

  ### 10. Looking at Email Security differently

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paul I. | Principal, Application Security Architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2024

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I like the "speedbump" technology that slows the spread of attacks.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

The Data Protection with 2FA/MFA is great as it can prevent further leaks if a bad actor were to get a hold of an email account. However, this restriction comes at a cost where it is a bit more difficult to filter historical emails for messages that you want to bring up. As usual with Security, it is a trade off between security and usability.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are supplementing our existing email security vendor with Material as another layer of advanced email protection.

  ### 11. Material Security has been a life changer!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Giovanni S. | IT Manager, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 19, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I love how in one package I am able to defend our entire email environment in our company. I am able to secure the inboxes, able to secure the accounts being taken over and even securing any data from leaking.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I hate that the modules were renamed, I understand branding changes with a growing company but I loved the name of the modules before. Account Take Over, Phishing Herd Immunity, and Leak prevention.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We didn't have a proper solution for email security and phishing. We would get regular phishing and spoofing attempts that it really caused some mental distress. With Material that really went away.

  ### 12. Material Security is the best data protection tool for your information

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** marenyane m. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I like the fact that it is easy to use
I like the fact that you can protect all information on the Microsoft platform
It blocks spam from unwanted sites or
I like the fact that you become in control of your data

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I don't think so far there is one thing to dislike about it. But maybe because it is a paid service. But besides that, I don't see any problem because the internet is full of phishers

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

it protects me from online phishers trying to steal my information
I am able to decide which information to secure.
It helps in providing the best defense mechanism on my online information especially on Google drive

  ### 13. Material Security, is a no-brainer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tim H. | Directory, Identity Governance and Administration, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 01, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Material Security address DLP at rest in the user's mailbox by protecting the specific content by MFA policy after aging rules. This addresses your users who treat their mailbox like a file plan. If the mailbox is compromised, the sensitive data is not. The mailbox owner can recover the data by providing their assigned MFA method if they need the content. Moreover, this gives leaders a metric to fine-tune mailbox retention policies because they can see how often aged content is or is not accessed. Additionally, the product protects against account takeovers; the SaaS or Vendor unique accounts the employees have established with third parties are not bound to the company SSO. Should the employee's mailbox be compromised, the bad actor must have the employee's assigned MFA token to see a password change request from a third party. Again while the user mailbox may have been compromised, the sensitive content has not been exposed.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

The fine-grain reporting on mailboxes based on keywords could be improved so it is less interactive, and more results are ready for download. Currently, you must flip through multiple pages and cannot download a final report.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Four key business problems: Are we protecting sensitive data at rest in the user's mailbox? Yes: this is accomplished by built-in DLP policies that are applied to all users or users with access to a specific content type. Are we preventing account takeovers if a user's mailbox is compromised? Yes: while a bad actor could request password changes, the verification email the user receives is protected by MFA. Lastly, are we provided reports and insights that can be used to tune policies and educate users? Yes: each enabled rule in Material Security provides detailed insights into effectiveness over time, that is, 30, 90, and all time. There is a fourth benefit less realized, which is how historical messages are addressed. When a policy is established and applied to a group of users, the policy addresses all new messages; however, it also, within a few hours, reviews all historical messages in the user's mailbox and protects those messages based on the policy, so it rolling forward and backward in the user's mailbox.

  ### 14. safe from cyber attacks

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Frank J. | Administrator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 07, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I implement training and security measures like classifying and composing confidential messages, limiting the scope of a breach, and adding a verification step before granting access to password resets to protect against phishing attacks that do get inside.

there is greater confidence in the control of the data

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

perfect functioning in the protection of microsoft and google accounts without negative circumstances

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ensures that the organization is safe from malicious attacks and can take proactive measures in time without regretting malicious actions

  ### 15. Helps to derisk and safeguard important systems of the company

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

The ease of integrating with Gsuite or Office 365 is something that stands out for me. These are the vulnerable applications in any business set-up having critical information. They help in safeguarding that.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

Nothing so far. Looks good overall to any company who's looking to stay safe with their data & identity.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are on a Google workspace ecosystem and email security is paramount for us. Therefore, Material security guys help us monitor any vulnerabilities with our emails and setup and help us stay safe from phishing activities.

  ### 16. Perfect compliment to existing security controls

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Herbert S. | Director of IT Security, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

I love that when a user marks an email as suspicious, it employs a banner warning any others who've received the same email.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I am extremely happy with the product as it is. I cannot honestly say that there is anything that I dislike about it at the present time.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Material Security analyzes email that is currently in our users' inbox. It gives the email user the power to mark something as suspicious and then warns all others who have received the same email. It also has added benefits for protecting our user accounts by alerting us to which accounts lack MFA.

  ### 17. Saves at least a day a week of on-call time.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2022

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Material takes the risk out of email and it gets better all the time. Phishing herd immunity lets us fully automate our phishing response in 99% of situations. Account Take Over and Leak Prevention do exactly what they say they do and rolling them out was much easier than we expected. Definitely pilot it first with your email-heavy users, but once it's there, it's a lot harder for phishing to result in full compromise. My favorite part about Material Security is how great their product development team is. They listen to customers and are fast about building high-value new features. I love that there are events and an API now for us to automate even more of the workflow.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

The billing team is fantastic, but getting contracts aligned can take a bit.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We no longer have to dedicate on-call time to investigating phishing reports. Between, Material, SSO, and yubikeys, most of what corporate security has to worry about is laptops and app access. Material cuts off so many vectors of attack and takes very little maintenance.

  ### 18. Best Secure platforms to secure the Identity Platforms

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Real Estate | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 01, 2023

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Offerings from Material security are well thought of common security problems faced by a company, implementing & hardening the identity platforms is well recommended & that functionality can easily be integrated with the Software.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

No, i did not find much dislikes as i did not spent much time in exploring different aspects of the software

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Integrating it with the Identity Servers & also integrating the Email platforms

  ### 19. Review for Material Security

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Salin K. | Sr. Presales Consultant - Microsoft Solutions, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 28, 2023

Datta Loss Prevention helps us with behavioral analysis, which prevents data loss

  ### 21. Next gen email security that fills a gap in the stack

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan D. | IT & Data, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 25, 2022

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Prior to Material there was no product in our email security stack that took the same approach as Material. Their thesis to protect the most sensitive emails in your inbox so that when a breach happens they are secured is a novel one that covers a previously unidentified need.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

The one feature that I am anxiously awaiting is the ability to easily create custom protection categories.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have always made the decision to allow employees to keep emails forever as they may need to reference them at some point in the future, however this creates a security issue that there is a ton of old, sensitive data in the inbox that is rarely (if ever) accessed. With Material I can allow the employees to keep those messages in their inbox but with the knowledge that they are protected with an extra layer of security.

  ### 22. Great Service and platform for Email Zero Trust

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rohit P. | Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2022

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

Material platform helped us discover and tag different components within our email infrastructure with ease, and helped us improve my detection and policy enforcement practices -- this helped us with quicker triage and response for any malicious/suspicious events before they became breaches.

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I wish there was more customizability on reporting that catered to different use-cases. This would have allowed me to have different distributions on KPIs and other metrics for different population groups.

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Leak prevention, Phishing defences and Data attribute discovery

  ### 23. Great product and customer service

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 29, 2021

**What do you like best about Material Security?**

The customer service and technology are well above its competitors. They made the onboarding process seamless. The team created a solid project plan and followed the deployment to completion. The technology works!

**What do you dislike about Material Security?**

I would like to see Phishing campaigns built into the product.
Easier way to report potential Phishing messages

**What problems is Material Security solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are protecting sensitive assets in email. If you assume that your email account has been compromised, Material will make sure the key assets (e.g. documents, sensitive emails) are protected.
