## Livecode Reviews
  ### 1. LiveCode: Successor to HyperCard

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Simon S. | Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 15, 2024

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

When Apple discontinued venerable HyperCard application back in 2004, I chose Runtime Revolution (originally MetaCard) which eventually evolved to LiveCode. I had become proficient in HyperCard's HyperTalk language, so I felt comfortable with Revolution's Transcript language, i.e., LiveCode's Script language. Just like HyperCard, LiveCode offers what they call "Edit live applications" with "run" and "edit" modes, meaning that there is no need to "compile" like any other computer languages.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

Some functions are slow if the number of cards in a stack is large. I have more than 6 800 cards in one stack.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

• HyperInfo.CA: HyperInfo Canada Inc.
• Hyper-biOObi: Integrated Multi-Dimensional Biography & Obituary Generator from a Single Source

  ### 2. Excellent Cross-Platform Development Environment

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Allen G. | Professor of Practice, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2021

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

Livecode is an extremely viable cross-development app platform. It allows a "build once, run everywhere" codebase to be deployed across desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux) and mobile (iOS and Android) as well as HTML5. Very stable, large userbase.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

The initial download is somewhat large, but it includes a ton of already-developed reusable code and libraries. The same could be said about XCode or VS.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can maintain one general codebase and tailor the UI for whatever platform is being targeted. It is also a comparatively rapid development language. What takes months to develop on other platforms can frequently be deployed in hours or days with Livecode.

  ### 3. Futurist, Technologist, Strategist, Engineer -- Current President at GEEX.GG INC.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sam M. | Board Member, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2021

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

Symbol-Free Syntax
Highest Level Language
Always Compiled Code
See your app running at any time, see and fix problems immediately. WYSIWYG Q/A

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

There is little to dislike because they offer both an open-source free IDE and several proprietary options.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We worked on a project for Google and built a UI and functions for an advanced wearable project that would have normally taken 3 months to build and design in Java, but it was 3 days in LiveCode.

  ### 4. Frustrating download and install process

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 09, 2020

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

In theory, this might be an interesting approach, although it is along the lines of Microsoft's, Apache Cordova, etc. Obviously the best aspect is the write-once aspect, but the syntax appears clunky.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

This appears to be an amateur operation. The web server from which you download the IDE (e.g. LiveCodeIndy.dmg) doesn't send a Content-Length header, so I just see a seemingly endless "Downloading 445.1 mb of ?" in the web browser. Seriously? In 2020? It's standard practice to let the user know how large the file download is so I know whether I can close my laptop or not.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Full disclosure, I am reviewing the product for a promised $25 gift card.

  ### 5. Easy to Learn, fun to execute

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Furniture | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2020

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

I like writing code in a more instructional manner in English. It is like thinking and typing in code is unhindered because of obvious syntax.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

It has a long way of providing on par tools in getting from point A to point B in development. Having said that, it has improved quite significantly when it first started.

**Recommendations to others considering Livecode:**

As with any development programming tool, take time to learn. The good thing is, you will get there faster than other tools.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Doing ranking through criteria and creating a showcase gallery of apps that are filtered by various categories.
The benefits are shorter development times.

  ### 6. A minimalist language for developing quick POC

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David M. R. | Software Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 06, 2020

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

I like how easy it is to get started with LiveCode. The installation is quick, and it is fairly easy to get a proof of concept running within the hour. Because the language is mainly derived from English, it is easy for non-developer to write code in LiveCode. The GUI editor allows to draw an application without having to write a single line of code! Much like Visual Studio, double-clicking on a component will generate the code for you if you need your component to do more than its basic functions.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

As a developer, it is actually counter-intuitive for me to get used to the syntax of the LiveCode language. Because it is closer to English, some of the more traditional programming syntax is non-existent in LiveCode. Therefore, it will take time to get used to it if you have always been programming with standard programming languages, such as C#, JavaScript, or Java.
While LiveCode is great to write proof of concept applications, it lacks the robustness of traditional object-oriented programming languages to write more complex applications.
Because the language is not as widely used as others, the user community is scarce; therefore it can be hard to get an answer online when you are stuck on something.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have tried to develop quick UI proof of concepts, such as creating a file converter, a custom directory browser, and a game.
I have realized how easy it is for anyone who doesn't necessarily have knowledge of computer programming to get started and achieve something. Writing the prof of concepts also allows me to validate the concepts of some ideas that I have, before jumping to developing this idea with more standard programming languages.

  ### 7. Livecode an easy to learn multiplatform deployment programming language

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Facilities Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 27, 2020

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

I have been using LiveCode for a few years now after being very long out of the programming game. And what I like best about LC is the fact that it is easy to learn and start with. There is no difficult to learn syntax, but coding is almost like writing normal understandable sentences. Also LC has very few limitations meaning that LC is excellent suitable for many different projects from your simple little app in the appstore (Android & IOS) to the development of Database based Corebusiness support software (Mac OS, Windows, Linux, HTML5). Write once and deploy on many platforms (Mac OS, Windows, Linux, HTML5, IOS, Android). And last but not least is the low cost of LC. There is a free open source version available to start with (great for learning) but also for the home developer an Indy License is available that does not break the bank. Additional making and sharing your own widgets and integration with Java is also possible as of 2018. And did I mention the great (free) support you get from the very active forum?

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

Of course no development language is perfect and LiveCode is no exception. First of all even though the basic costs of LC are low the last 2 years LC has split up different options one of which is HTML deployment. This would (at this moment) cost a developer an additional $499/year.
Livecode has the basic math functions available however the more scientific functions are not available (or you need to build those yourselves). Also integration of your app with advertisers for in the appstore is something they need to work on. I am also missing advanced graphic functionalities beyond the very basic options LC has now that would make it easier to make different type of graphs for visual communications.

**Recommendations to others considering Livecode:**

I would recommend using LiveCode for most situations.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have developed ERP (business support software) based on databases as well as apps for appstore and inbetween.

  ### 8. livecode an excellent multiplatform development environment

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** ezio c. | Especialista, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2019

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

Livecode has an advantage in its favor that it can be used on all platforms, such as iOS, Android, OS X, Windows, and Unix. Livecode can be used by all types of users thanks to its ease of use and intuitive interface. This IDE can be used for desktop applications, web pages, and servers. This IDE does not consume many resources in its processor like other IDEs, so it does not need a computer with a large amount of RAM for its execution.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

So far there is nothing that I dislike about this IDE, I just wish there was a little more documentation for it.

**Recommendations to others considering Livecode:**

I recommend this product as it is not an expensive tool and it is easy to use for all types of users.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Livecode has helped me create graphical interfaces quickly and efficiently in record time thanks to its easy way of use.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James R. | Especialista, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 29, 2019

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

LiveCode is very easy to start as a developer since it has a basic code that is easy to use and detail, it is multiplatform, you can develop tanton in win, linux, android, iOS, HTML5 and more. It is very good to learn if you are new in this world it will cost but with several practice sessions you will master it very easily.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

the only thing that displeases me is that the code can be much better, being detailed you can notice that it is a little archaic

**Recommendations to others considering Livecode:**

I recommend 100% is very remarkable that the code needs improvement but with frequent use and understanding of the code is very easy to use and fast development in this, we have taken the legs of mud on many occasions.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have developed mobile applications, both in Android and iOS, we have been able to teach the staff how to use this tool easily and quickly, it can be developed quickly and efficiently

  ### 10. Livecode is the best IDE to create apps for multiple platforms.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** every d. | Especialista en TI, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 29, 2019

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

Livecode is an IDE that facilitates the development of multiplatform applications such as Linux, Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, and HTML5, while running on Linux, Windows, or MacOS. It has 2 types of licenses: a GPL for open source applications, and another proprietary one for those who want to create closed-source applications. It greatly facilitates screen design thanks to its intuitive and user-friendly interface, which allows for the creation of really complex applications in a simple way. Another highlight is that the software does not consume as much processor power as other IDEs, so it does not require a high-performance PC to use it.

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

The only problem with Livecode is its documentation which is not completely updated, and some of its features do not work as specified.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This software has helped the company to create interfaces for different apps quickly.

  ### 11. Excellent application for creating apps

Simple interface for the user, development of fast and efficient code, besides that allows to design our application in a fast way and something similar to the structure of models offered by languages like java or c #. It's fast at performance level

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

The application is a bit limiting at the time of wanting to define functionalities for the modules that we want to develop. In addition, it has strong competition for those who know how to develop

**Recommendations to others considering Livecode:**

excellent if you want to develop an application quickly and effectively, I really recommend it

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was able to quickly design a desktop application with its forms and functionalities in a successful way

  ### 12. What an idea!

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shubham S. | Student at Georgia tech, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2019

**What do you like best about Livecode?**

It is amazing how nobody has ever thought about creating a platform that can use pieces of code on multiple platforms. As a developer, this has saved me tremendous amount of time!

**What do you dislike about Livecode?**

The user interface of the platform can be better. If the interface can be cleaned up a bit and allow users to explore the platform with ease, then it will improve the platform's productivity by a lot.

**Recommendations to others considering Livecode:**

The platform is not perfect but it can save you a lot of time as a developer.

**What problems is Livecode solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problem that I am trying to solve is development of complex apps without starting everything from scratch for different platforms such as Android and iOS. LiveCode has solved this problem for me and allowed me to create apps for multiple platforms without doing repetitive work.
