## HCL Domino Reviews
  ### 1. Reliable, Secure, Confident.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 11, 2026

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

I like that HCL Domino runs reliably, securely, and air-gapped, while being very cost-effective. The setup was very easy, especially thanks to the wide support of operating systems. Additionally, I appreciate that it can be operated independently, including the possibility of BSI IT-Grundschutz certification of the operation.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

Domino still supports applications from 1998 - and unfortunately, it looks like it too. This affects user adoption. A design refresh is possible, but it is not enforced.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

HCL Domino is a sovereign application and communication system that runs securely, reliably, air-gapped, and cost-effectively. It is better suited for business operations and enables a BSI IT-Grundschutz certification of the operation.

  ### 2. Reliable Platform for Legacy Applications

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ranjeet M. | Software Engineer – Frontend, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 08, 2025

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

HCL Domino offers rock-solid reliability and security for managing enterprise-grade email, workflows, and custom business applications. I especially appreciate its backward compatibility and the ability to modernize existing Notes apps without rebuilding from scratch. The platform’s low-code capabilities with Domino Volt also make it easier to develop and deploy internal tools quickly, even for non-developers.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

The user interface feels outdated compared to modern platforms, and customization often requires legacy skills that are harder to find today. The learning curve can be steep for new users, and the ecosystem lacks the vibrant community and third-party integrations you get with tools like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Additionally, licensing and deployment can be complex for smaller teams.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

HCL Domino helps manage internal workflows, secure email, and custom business applications all in one platform. It’s solving the problem of maintaining legacy systems without needing a full rebuild. We benefit from its stability, low-code capabilities with Domino Volt, and strong access controls—allowing us to modernize applications gradually while keeping costs and disruptions low.

  ### 3. Reliable enterprise software

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 24, 2025

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

Domino is established software with security out of the box. Replicated databases are designed for offline work.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

Not so much integrated with modern SaaS platforms or AI.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Enteprise mail and integrated applications.

  ### 4. The business platform

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2019

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

Domino is the platform for most business needs and if you need an app for a business problem you can easily create one. You can create the server in your prefered cloudhosting provider or on your own server hardware locally

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

Speed could be faster for complex operations

**Recommendations to others considering HCL Domino:**

If you want one platform for your business apps where you still have control over the apps

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Agreementmanagment, hr, Iso and other business documentation. CRM, intranet, extranet, customer support, invoicing, time reporting

  ### 5. HCL Domino, an amazing Enterprise business platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Natalie L. | Director of Finance/Operations/Strategy, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

There still is nothing like Domino. Imagine a single platform that does unlimited on-prem or cloud corporate email, has rapid-develop applications that you can custom build and hosted on the same server, incorporates all of the latest technologies. In a world that only uses binary terminology, Microsoft and Google, Domino is a platform that ticks all the same boxes from Microsoft and Google, but without being the phishing and hacking target that they have become.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

HCL has done a much better job in developing new technology, but could be a little more innovative. While all enterprise features are here that you could want, some minor calendaring (iCal) and mail features are slightly limited, but not enough to impact productivity. A few features would be nice to compete with Outlook. (Multiple accounts per user in client, (not just delegated)

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Domino gives un an un-house, fully proprietary enterprise email and application platform that brings products to production faster than any other system out there.

  ### 6. A great workhorse that has stood the test of time

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Construction | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

Domino / Notes has been a stable of our companies systems for years. Its bredth of capability is unmatched within a single platform. We have found that doing things in the Domino platform much easier then other platforms.

The simplicity of building quality applications in little time has made this a great platform. The new Nomad interface has made the system much easier to use and configure for our users.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

Unfortunately for the platform, its previous owner sat on the technology for two long with its current stack. HCL has made great improvements since taking over but the 'low-code' market is now very competitive.

It is a real shame as its previous inability to use modern technologies make it poor to integrate with and kept it isolated from our other enterprise applications.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Domino manages some bespoke user requirements that are not met in COTS products.

  ### 7. Easy to use and simple to administer

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Patrick E. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 10, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

Users may not all be used to HCL Domino, but as an admin it is made very easy to administer the whole system and help users (e.g. if they are more familiar with Outlook).
Updates are easy to install and are usually free of major bugs. This is my experience after almost 20 years with Domino.
Customer support is always helpful.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

Sometimes there are problems with compatibility with other systems.
Users complain about the user interface and sometimes about options that are too hidden.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We also use it as a mail server, but also as a CRM system. It is extremely cost-effective and robust.

  ### 8. A Comprehensive Review of HCL Domino

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kanaad Sanjay R. | Senior Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 26, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

It is very easy to use HCL domino for the new users or the new commers in the developoment. Implemetation of the things is easy. Customer support helps in the cases where we are unable to find solution. There are many more number of features we can use for the development of worflow and process it. Integration is easy for common and reusable components.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

HCL domino can improve quality of search and they can make search faster throughout. Some of the security features we can upgrade. Cost is high, so only big players can use.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

HCL domino is solving problems for new commers in IT sector. They are easily making new software with the help o HCL Domino. Search functionality is good. HCL Domino suggetions feature for some of the languages is very good. So no need to remember inbuilt application things.

  ### 9. Very flexible Application Server with somewhat outdated Design and Features

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

Flexibility, Programmability in various languages. Thereby possibility to integrate with almost every othe application server.
Extremely good downward compatibility. We still run applications that have been developed back in 1998 without any problems. Installation and backup is very easy. Administration is simple and transparent.
Domino replication is still unmatched as is security configuration for Domino applications.
Since we are power users of Domino we make extensive use of the seamless integration of mail and document management.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

We have some serious issues with TLS encryption.
The Notes client has become increasingly crash-prone in the last year or so. We believe that quality assurance has been somewhat neglected, since in the past the client was very stable.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We run our whole business on Domino, that includes document management, controlling tasks, contract management, HR, compliance, project management.

  ### 10. A Journey form zero to hero

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jan C. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

HCL / IBM Domino is realiable and stable system. Never had any problems with databases or data coruption, databases without official support can last for decades. Vendors and dedicted software developers are very skilled and proffesional.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

The mailing part of the server bearly is up to date. Mail exhange standards supports are implemented with big wait time. We must implement workarounds.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have a CRM APP developed by Asseco BS. App Xpertis CRM if fully integrated with Mail. Basicly we could put enything to our CRM without constraints.

  ### 11. Revolutionary in its day but has been left behind

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Robert D. | IT Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2023

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

It is extremely configurable. If you have the right coding skills the system can do a lot. You can create bespoke applications and databases to meet many peoples requirements.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

It requires developers to do almost anything. The system is painfully dated looking and doesn't easily integrate well. Without the required developer coding skills it's expensive to maintain.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Currently it's only use is for change management. We have moved almost everything else off it. At this stage of its lifecycle it's causing more issues than it is solving.

  ### 12. A powerful and versatile platform for low code app Development

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raushan K. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 04, 2024

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

The best thing about HCL Domino is the low-code development environment which allows any newbie to start developing applications.
Also, with the no-code solution, the Domino Leap, enterprise apps can be built without coding knowledge. Small businesses can develop and deploy their applications very fast for market testing.
The apps are faster to access on a browser through the Nomad web.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

Some features of HCL Domino rely on Notes Client which is a limitation for migration of software.
There is limited third-party service integration which restricts someone to migrate to HCL Domino.
The support community is small which prolongs issue resolution.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

HCL Domino is helping small business owners and self-employed people to develop their systems in less time than they would require in traditional methods. Hiring a proper developer to build a system is a time-consuming and somewhat expensive task.

  ### 13. Domino - Flexible and solid as a rock

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Arne B. | Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 16, 2019

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

Domino is and has always been the fastest rapid development platform enabling IT teams to respond to application/process requirements within hours or days compared to other tech platforms that would require weeks or months til delivery.

Another important plus for Domino is it’s scalability when it comes to running multiple functions such as email, apps and chat and more on a single server where other vendors would need several servers thus the cost of operations of Domino is outstandingly attractive.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

It’s difficult to name real downsides running the Domino platform. It‘s an application and collaboration and messaging platform and the appearance/UI of apps strongly depends on the developers. Just writing that since the „old school“ UI has in some cases been a point of criticism. But honestly, it’s not the platform, it’s the capability and feeling for good design of the respective development team that makes apps work well and look modern.

**Recommendations to others considering HCL Domino:**

If you are looking for a cost efficient high quality, scalable and flexible server system that does mail, messaging, apps and is extremely secure, your first choice should be Domino.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Domino is the server-side platform that enables us to run all of our enterprise ERP systems in Notes.

HCL Domino Leap low-code development can be used to develop enterprise-grade applications that incorporate the security of Domino platform.

Ease of integration and good customer support are other positives.

An ecosystem for HCL Domino Leap low-code developers is required for leveraging the Domino Leap platform in non-IT organisations.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

From HCL Domins Developers benefits in fast application development. It provides us both low-code and no-code options.

  ### 30. Fast and reliable Plattform

**What do you like best about HCL Domino?**

I like the simplicity of a Domino Server to get it running. Once a Domino Server is up and running, it will not take a lot of work to keep it maintained.
Of course, a Domino Server has a lot of settings that can be modified to fit any business requirement.
Since HCL has taken over, many new features and bugs have been fixed. Major releases are coming out yearly, which shows Domino is not dead.
Domino makes it easy to manage several hundred users without the need of having to run a vast server platform.

**What do you dislike about HCL Domino?**

The software has flaws and will take a while to get ironed out.
Once HCL has taken over the errors and new features have been implemented, the software is getting a better reputation.
Domino has a semi-bad reputation because nothing has been changed or added for years. Of course, HCL has taken over, but a lot of companies, at least german companies, are moving away from Domino, considering it an old and dead software... Other software out there looks more modern, has more features, and has a better reputation than Domino.
It seems to me that there is not enough marketing to make Domino more popular again and maybe convince companies to stay with Domino instead of moving away.

**What problems is HCL Domino solving and how is that benefiting you?**

So since we have over roughly 500 users currently logged into the Domino Server, it is easy to manage all the applications we develop in-house. We can program our databases and have the workforce support all of them by ourselves. If a database needs new features, we can program these features ourselves and don't have to rely on the standardized shelf software. This makes it very easy for us to develop new required software rather than buy it, hoping and depending on the software to meet our needs.
We have a fairly significant development and administration team, making managing all of Domino's needs reasonably easy.
Domino is very cost-effective programming and Mail Service Plattform.
Not many providers out there make it easy for us to manage and run all of our services and servers on Prem; most require the servers to be ordered in the cloud.
