They have taken the frightening process of New York State Certified Payroll and made it something that only takes a few minutes each week. The pricing is higher compared to other non-specialized payroll systems; however, the time it has saved us as even a small contractor has been absolutely worth it. Both the backoffice admin panel and the employee app are easy to use. In the rare instances when there is an issue, their team has always been responsive and communicative. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** The pricing is higher than something like Gusto. However, the industry-specific features that it offers make it good value. That simplicity has also created a lot of efficiencies in our payroll processing. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** Right now, there’s really only one report available that includes all the information I need, so I’m constantly having to take that large Excel file and manipulate it to get what I’m looking for. It would be really helpful to have a general ledger report, along with a few other standard accounting reports, so I wouldn’t need to do so much manual work outside the system. We use it as part of our broader workforce operations, and their team has been very willing to work with us on how we want data to flow across the business. A good example is the API. I’ve been building an internal project dashboard using Claude Code, and Hammr worked with us to make the workforce and payroll data we needed available through their API. That has made it much easier to pull information into our own internal tools instead of being limited to canned reports. I’ve also been closely involved in our migration from QuickBooks Desktop to Sage Intacct, and Hammr has been very hands-on throughout that process. They’ve worked with us on the integration details and on making sure payroll and workforce data will map correctly into the new accounting setup. Value surpasses cost. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** There’s nothing major I would call out. We tend to have fairly specific workflow and integration requirements, and the main thing I care about is whether the vendor is willing and able to work through them with us. Hammr has been very good about that. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** For us, the problem is less about simply running payroll and more about connecting workforce data to the rest of the company. Especially since we’re signatory to many unions and have a lot of data that needs to be connected and reported on. We want project, labor, and payroll information to be usable in our own reporting and operational systems. Hammr’s API has given us much more flexibility there, and it has allowed me to build internal tooling around our actual workflow instead of forcing everything into one vendor’s interface. The Sage Intacct migration is another example. We have employees moving between jobs, sub-jobs, and different types of work, so scheduling—and knowing exactly where people are supposed to be at any given time—is critical for us. Hammr gives us a much stronger foundation for that than what we had before. I also appreciated that the team was willing to make real commitments during implementation. We had a few requirements that were non-negotiable, especially around sub-jobs, and they agreed in writing that we would not go live until those items were ready. That gave me a lot of confidence in making the switch. The support alone is a great value... **What do you dislike about Hammr?** Some of the functionality we needed was still being built when we started working with them, so implementation required more collaboration than simply turning on an existing system. That said, they have been very good about following through on what they commit to. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** We wanted one system that could connect the field side of the business with payroll and compliance. Scheduling is a big part of that. We need to assign employees to the right jobs and work orders, track that work at the right level, and then have that information carry through into payroll, prevailing wage, and certified payroll. Hammr also supports the Davis-Bacon and prevailing wage requirements we deal with in Alaska, including classifications and fringe calculations. That saves us from having to piece together separate systems or spreadsheets. ### 7. We were manually managing prevailing wage/Davis-Bacon rates and fringes, splitting hours across jobs, and then entering everything AGAIN into LCPtracker for certified payroll. With 200+ employees, it was consuming days of our lives every week. Hammr changed that. They understand construction payroll, prevailing wage, fringes, job costing and certified payroll without us having to explain it. What used to take hours in LCPtracker now takes seconds. Our field guys actually like the app, onboarding is easy, and even benefits/open enrollment was incredibly smooth. But the support is probably my favorite part. We have actual people who know our company and listen when we need something — no submitting a ticket into the abyss and praying. Payroll is easier, our field guys are happy, and our leadership has better visibility. Somehow Hammr got an entire construction company to agree on software. That’s an accomplishment in itself. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** I honestly wouldn’t call this a dislike. Hammr is a growing company, and I actually think that’s one of their strengths. Naturally, there are features and reporting capabilities that are still being built out as the platform grows. The difference is they listen. We can tell them what isn’t working or what would make our lives easier, and it doesn’t disappear into a corporate black hole. We see conversations, solutions and actual improvements come from our feedback. I’ll take a growing company that listens to contractors and builds alongside us over a massive payroll provider that already has every feature but takes three weeks and six departments to “close a case”. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** Hammr has simplified a lot of the complexity that comes with construction payroll. From prevailing wage and multiple jobsites to per diem, reimbursements, deductions, and compliance, we’re spending less time fighting the system and more time actually managing payroll. We came from ADP, where it was often difficult to get timely help from someone who understood what we were trying to do. With Hammr, we have been able to work directly with a team that knows our setup and responds quickly when something comes up.
The onboarding was also much easier than we expected. Hammr handled a lot of the data migration and setup for us, which allowed us to switch systems within a couple of weeks without putting a huge burden on our internal team.
We also do a growing amount of prevailing wage work, and having payroll and certified payroll reporting in the same system has been very valuable **What do you dislike about Hammr?** Hammr is a newer platform, so there have been some areas where we needed functionality that wasn’t available exactly the way we wanted it at first.
What has made that much less of an issue is how closely their team works with us. We have been able to give them feedback on our workflows, and they have been very willing to make improvements and build new functionality around real customer needs. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed a payroll system that could better support a construction company doing more prevailing wage work. Certified payroll reporting was becoming increasingly important for us, and we didn’t want to keep adding manual processes as that side of the business grew.
Hammr has helped bring payroll, prevailing wage, and certified payroll into one workflow and has reduced a lot of the administrative work around them.
We later moved our benefits administration into Hammr as well. We ran open enrollment through the platform, and the process was very smooth. Our brokers were also impressed with how responsive the Hammr team was throughout the process.
Overall, it has given us fewer systems to manage and much better support when we need help. ### 9. We came from an experience where getting help could mean spending hours on chat and still not getting a useful answer. With Hammr, when we have an issue, someone actually understands what we’re asking and helps us work through it. Our payroll isn’t simple, so that level of support matters a lot. The team has taken the time to understand how we operate, rather than just telling us how the software is “supposed” to work, and they provide us with the tools we need. They’ve gone above and beyond any customer service I’ve used previously. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** Honestly, nothing. That said, there have been a few things we’ve needed that weren’t available yet, but they’ve always found a way to get us what we need, or something close to what we’re looking for. The biggest thing is they actually understand the construction industry, the unique needs, nuances, and rules. They can actually deliver on the things they promise! We tried different payroll time tracking in the past, such as intuit/TSheets and while that helped, it was never a "one stop shop" for our payroll needs. We still had many hours of manual entry and oversight each week. Certified payrolls and prevailing wage projects were all handled manually in the past, which was a nightmare. Hammr is the first true "one stop shop" payroll company that can handle multiple prevailing wage classifications (Laborer, Teamster, various level of Operating Engineers), multiple worker's comp codes and get it right! The certified payroll reports are accurate, complete, and takes about 30 seconds to generate. Certified payroll, for one week, for one project, used to take me about 2.5 hours to complete. Those days are a VERY distant memory now. Recently, our GC requested 6 weeks of CPRs that I was backlogged on. I was able to complete that request within minutes. This resulted in us receiving a hand delivered check the next morning! That normally would have derailed my entire week and resulted in many hours of overtime work so that we could get our check in a timely manner. I can't begin to tell you how happy that made me AND our owner! Hammr also integrates with our accounting system so job costing is not an issue. I can easily look at the reports in Hammr by project or just pull it up in our accounting software and see the actual costs, split by job, classifications, cost codes, with ease. It really does check ALL of the boxes for us as a contractor. When it comes to time tracking: The mobile app is super easy and user-friendly. We have a range of super tech savvy to "I barely got a smartphone this year" employees and they can all use the app. It is intuitive and has a very easy interface. Another issue we saw with different payroll companies in the past is not having enough fields to enter all pertinent information. In Hammrʼs app and the system it allows us to track anything we want. Equipment, classification (for prevailing wage projects), cost codes (activity), hours, breaks, notes etc. The guys even attach photos of any purchases they make throughout the day or any significant jobsite information. The guys can see their PTO and sick hour balances right in the app as well as view their paystub immediately after payroll. This eliminates a lot of tedious questions between field and office as well as putting more knowledge in THEIR hands. It is nice for them to know that they have all of that information at their fingertips at any time and don't have to come to me at 4pm on a Sunday when they want to purchase a new car or otherwise need that info! The time that Hammr has freed up for me has directly been linked to many cost saving projects that I just didn't have the time for in the past. The goal of a growing business is efficiency and Hammr really allows me to accomplish that. I have been able to dedicate more time to process revision, AR/AP research and finding "deals" for the companyʼs materials. Onboarding has also been a dream. I was doing things archaically in the past but the onboarding is totally customizable and allows us to enter new employees and get them on our jobsites within an hour (most of this is policy review!. Gone are the days of them driving to the office, physical papers, handwriting and scanning docs manually. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** It's hard to say that there is anything I dislike about Hammr. Of course, things can always be improved upon or revised but when those things come up - I jot them all down and shoot their support team an email. They read it, take the time to respond to me, thoughtfully, and actually integrate the things I ask for. It's amazing to be heard and responded to as more than a "number" in their system. I know them by name, and vice versa. The customer service and assistance is above and beyond which makes me feel great when it comes to something as sensitive as payroll. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** Well, I got my nights and weekends back and I took my longest vacation in 8 years with my family, so that is a HUGE personal win for me. A lot of contractors rely on one person or a very small office team to handle certain aspects of the office, and we are no different. Without having someone to run payroll every week for us, and handle compliance, I was kind of stuck. Hammr has been such a blessing in this regard because even though I am still the person who runs payroll; I can run payroll in 20 minutes while sitting at the airport. For the company, Hammr has solved so many of our challenges that piled up surrounding payroll. Keeping our prevailing wage rates and fringes accurate, in compliance and automatically calculated is something I didn't think was possible with a payroll company. Before Hammr, I was calculating all rates, fringes, allowable fringe deductions and expirations using an excel spreadsheet. I was even using a spreadsheet to track PTO balances because I didn't trust Intuit to do it accurately. Hammr has completely changed that, I no longer have to devote my bandwidth to thinking about those things. A quick accuracy check once in a while and you start to build that trust with the software and know that your information is being handled and reported correctly. It truly is an amazing feeling. As far as the benefits, it is the long hours it has saved me and it is also that I'm not dreading emails from our GCs anymore or letting one busy week turn into a pile that I can't even get to. I used to cancel vacations because I had so much anxiety around our payroll. Four months into using Hammr I took my longest vacation in 8 years with my family because I knew I could log on for a few minutes and be totally fine. That's a really big deal for me and Iʼm really happy that it has worked out so well for us. It has made my life easier with payroll and also I love that it makes our field guys jobs easier also. I’ve worked both in the office and in the field, and I’ve used accounting systems as well as tools to manage field operations, so I have a good sense of how systems should be built and integrated. Historically, the systems we used were geared toward making office staff’s lives easier, since they’re usually the ones making the software purchasing decision. Hammr is the first system we’ve used that’s truly been a win for both our office team and our field staff. For our field team, clocking in is done with one button. I watched guys who have used a time card for the last 18 years download Hammr’s mobile app, and without me saying anything, they were clocked in to the right job and job code. Scheduling is easy, with automated notifications and PTO integration, plus the ability to customize an unpaid policy so you can give days off without it counting against vacation. You can also schedule by crew, not just individuals, and you can have multiple crews. Job documents are easy to view, and you can zoom in to a high level of detail so plans are readable on a phone. They know exactly what’s expected of them. Daily reports are automated with weather and hours worked. One of our PMs used to enter hours into Sage every day, and she was like, “Wait, where do I put the hours?” I just smiled and said, “Click submit and print it.” Photos have been a surprise benefit too—guys are starting to post photos and try to one-up each other on quality of workmanship, and we’re also getting an endless flow of marketing material from jobs. Chat has bi-directional translation built in, which lets our office communicate with field employees more effectively. Employees can tell you care enough to communicate in their own language, and the mobile app automatically translates to Spanish for them. For the office/admin/payroll side, onboarding documents and employee setup are straightforward. Certifications and expiration tracking are built in. Payroll is simple and clean to run and process. Certified Payroll Reporting makes us want to win more of those prevailing wage projects, and the fringe benefit calculations are helping us save money. For the owners, being able to see payroll amounts for each project and employee ahead of the payroll run helps with cash flow planning. Costs flow directly into QBO by project. And it’s also easy to make announcements to the whole staff to thank them for a hard day’s work. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** I jokingly say that my biggest concern for the product- is my competitors start using it haha. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** We’re a contractor that does state and federal prevailing wage work, so our payroll used to take 10–12 hours a week. Now we run payroll in Hammr in about 10 minutes. Certified payroll reports used to take forever, and now our team just clicks a button after payroll and they’re always ready to go. A good example was a customer who needed job costing data synced into Sage Intacct based on hours worked. The Hammr team partnered closely with us to clarify the requirement and, in the end, developed an approach that supported that specific use case. I’m also impressed by how intuitive the platform is, especially given the complexity of construction payroll. Before Hammr, a lot of my time was spent checking hours, moving data between systems, fixing spreadsheets, and making sure everything lined up before payroll could be processed. Now I can review most of that information in one place and catch issues before payroll is submitted. Certified payroll is also much easier. Instead of treating it like a separate process after payroll, the information is already there and the reports are much quicker to prepare. I also appreciate how responsive the Hammr team is. Payroll issues are usually time-sensitive, and when I have a question I can get help from someone who understands both the product and our setup. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** Nothing major comes to mind. We send them the onboarding link and they can fill out their info on their phone, upload documents, sign everything electronically, direct deposit, tax forms, all of it. We don’t have to chase paper around nearly as much. There are also a bunch of smaller payroll things that make a big difference. Employees can split their net pay between accounts, garnishments are handled in payroll, and certified payroll reports are way easier than what we were doing before. It's also very user-friendly both on web and their mobile app. We have also utilized their integration with Quickbooks to sync back job costs for our PM teams. **What do you dislike about Hammr?** We ran into some issues with geofencing on the mobile app when we onboarded. It was mostly around employees not knowing why the app needs to know their location. They have since made some improvements to the app to make employees share their location. Overall the team is great to work with and they are very receptive to feedback. **What problems is Hammr solving and how is that benefiting you?** Mainly it has reduced a lot of the admin work that used to fall on our office. New hire onboarding is much easier because employees do most of it themselves from mobile. We use e-signatures instead of printing forms, and things like direct deposit and tax forms are all collected in the same process.
