People underestimate what Freemius can do for your business, especially for developers coming from the EU.
Merchant of Record:
This is almost no way around having a merchant of record to collect and manage taxes worldwide as a company from within the EU.
You would most likely need a full-time contractor to handle that, and paying the revenue share to Freemius is nowhere near the typical salaries here.
This is the most important benefit for me using Freemius, but there is a lot more:
Integration:
The integration in your plugin couldn't be easier. Even if you are a beginner to WordPress development, you will not have any problems integrating it, separating pro-and-free features, and including/excluding files.
Software licensing:
This is also a huge benefit. Sure, there are self-hosted (or plugin solutions) to that. But think of your business in the long-term - do you really want to store 200-500k licenses in your WordPress installation? How do you make it searchable? Exportable? Well, with Freemius, you don't even have to worry.
Recurring Payments:
Sure, integrating stripe is easy these days, but that's only a small part of the solution. Handling invoices, validating VAT numbers, preventing fraud, and doing automatic retries are not easy.
There is a lot more to Freemius, but here are the some of the most important features for me:
- stressfree refund handling
- prorating purchases
- impersonated logins
Support:
It's personal, it's fast, and it's reliable.
If you need help (business-related, tech-related), someone can help you.
You will get to know some of the coolest people in the WordPress space here. Trust me, you will also be a fanboy soon ;-)
There is also a large Slack community to exchange ideas and more. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
To be honest, there isn't much to dislike at Freemius.
I would like to see a couple of improvements on the UI side of things, especially the implementation part on your own website (I don't use the payment integration within my products).
More freedom to customize the checkout, better integration of the account area, and maybe some embeddable widgets to show reviews and some stats on the website. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
