The core pieces of Colleague remain the same. I appreciate that finding the various screen has lots of quick links or short hand to help get through various screens more quickly. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** The system feels a bit out of date & runs slower with each update. Could use a couple more quick click screens to get to NSLDS rather than having to click multiple screens to find out loan information. I do not like that you can no longer see a students SSN on the AIDE screen. But instead, you have to go to SASM or to BIO. Which is difficult when the majority of the work I do is in FASI, AIDE and ARTI/SI. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Do not try to make the system work for you. Instead, learn how to use the system the way it is designed and bend your company to Colleague. Things to be updated: Quicker ways to get to NSLDS. Put SSN back on AIDE screen. More indepth reporting services. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** Working with multiple students and families each day, I am able to solve the majority of their questions all in one location. I'm not having to go to each individual Government site, but instead I am able to have it all linked into Colleague. It helps provide a more complete financial picture in one place. ### 2. It seems to run fairly smoothly, and never have an issue getting logged in. It has a very intuitive search function, with many many ways to locate a student in the database. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** It has a LOT of quirks. Especially when it comes to what we are able to print/send digitally. For example, we can easily save digital copies of student account invoices, but we cant send digital copies of a students schedule. This has been frustrating in a number of ways. I know some of this comes down to what our company specifically chose to use, feature wise, in the program. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Its a great program, but it had a huge learning curve to get used to. I've been using it every day for nearly a year and there are some things I still don't know how to do. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our entire school runs off banner. Student accounts, enrollment, financial aid, grade tracking, etc. Every aspect of our school is managed by this program. With that being said, its reach is expansive, and its versatility is great. There are often multiple places where I am able to find information for any particular student which makes it very accessible to all members of staff. ### 3. The newest version of Banner looks much better and like actual modern software. I do like that it integrates with other programs for degree audits. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Banner can be a little slow and sometimes clunky. Some of the shortcut keys don't work as well as they used to. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are solving registration, overrides, and course access issues. Also, you can start typing the name of the screen that you want and it auto populates to get there faster. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** For some fields here I just have to enter a student number so I would like to press Enter instead of having to physically click on Go. It would make navigating a few seconds faster. Some people prefer having "wide open windows" but I prefer a smaller window if that entire space is not being used. The cosmetic part could look a bit better but it gets the task complete. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** It is user-friendly and is a great asset to companies with large populations and/or data. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** We do not work in the accounts office for the students, but it gives us viewing access to their accounts where we would not have to send an email to get the information that we need, then have to wait for a response, especially during peak periods. We can see what we need and immediately decide what action to take. I work in an office that manages meals for students and we often have to check the account activity to see what action is needed on our end; would we have to remove the meals, add more, add multiple, cancel entirely, and so on. ### 5. I like that Colleague allows me to access all the students information they need, view their restrictions, see their addresses, see who they are related to, see their class schedule and personal information if I need to do more than just email them directly. I also like that I can make edits such as change their advisor or committee member. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I dislike the fact that there is no real shortcut to see the different screens. You can see them only if you've inputted the screen (ie: SPRO, XTH2A) previously in the form search history section. I do like that it is pretty simple to use and that it doesn't have an update every so many days. I dislike that you have to memorize or already know almost every screen you want to go to, there is no list anywhere provided. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Learn from someone in your office who is a pro and knows all the different screens available, it will really help you become more efficient in using the product and also help make your job easier. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use it to look up students information, schedules, adjust their advisors/committee, look at a students restrictions on their account. We also use it to find out their addresses, people that they are related to, etc. The benefits are that it helps reduce the amount of paper we have to keep on hand and can have all this information stored on the system instead. ### 8. I came from an institution that used Slate, and reverting to Banner is like going back in time. Or being sent to Purgatory to data-enter my sins away. The program is completely not intuitive. Its lack of intuition builds on itself--you must know the completely nonsensical names for multitudes of individual forms, and then memorize dozens of nonsensical codes for information. There are "null" fields. You can't undo mistakes easily. There's no central screen with options where to go. It kicks you off without warning. You have to enter information in quadruplicate. With one particular function we use, the form "SZPARTI, you can literally ruin thousands of student records by accidentally leaving one single field empty. Why would anyone program something like that?! Why would any administrator trust human employees with such a buggy system? **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Don't. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am a lowly user, so I can't speak to the problems my institution has solved, but I do know it has created a problem for its employees by using this system. We gripe pretty consistently about it. If you are at all concerned about preserving a humane workplace, stay away from Banner. If that it not your concern, by all means inflict upon your minions with your best evil laugh. ### 10. It offers a consistent database to use with our various staff and faculty members to ensure we all rely on the same information. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Until recently, Colleague relied on Microsoft Silverlight, which would not run on most browsers. The lack of accessibility was a major problem only resolved recently. Additionally, the shared permissions are frustratingly limited. I often have to contact another user to obtain the information I need. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Form a working relationship with your system administrator. Colleague is difficult to learn on one's own, so this person will greatly ease your learning curve. It's best to memorize them or have a list of the most frequently used screens. The colors and font can be customized which is nice. The last update that was added has improved my experience. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I don't like how much time it takes to navigate between screens. I want to be able to work faster than it's capable of. I find myself waiting on it to catch up with me and when it does, it will shut down and I have to restart. It's very frustrating when I'm working through a list of students and the software can't keep up with me. I've used this software for over 10 years and gone through many "updates", but it sill needs some major updates. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** I haven't used any other similar product, so it's hard to recommend this one. I do like the fact that you can click to get to another page while being in a page instead of having to go back and putting your choice of page at the top. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I hate the fact that it is so unbelievably slow sometimes! I don't understand why some days it just goes and why others it needs to think and process for up to 10 seconds or more. It is frustrating. I also have gotten use to it loading aback up after every few users but i also don't understand why that needs to happen. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** I am not sure what the price is for this, that is why I put n/a. I would say to go ahead and try out this product for those who haven't. You have to tweak stuff in order for other stuff to work. I used it in the financial aid office to award students and it took me 19 pages to generate a letter that I would then have to go and edit key points. I also don’t like how you have to “drill in” to so many spots to find answers. That being said they do strive to stay on the cutting edge of technology. Their support teams are pretty good. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Though I am not privy to all the cost I have seen some of the annual renewals and makes me feel I am in the wrong business. Some of the things noticed was support is great but they have a few products where the support seems either overstretched or not enough staff? They have a tendency to up sale software that has not been released. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is our primary SIS and we have additional software offered by Ellucian that supplement additional business needs. In my job, we deal with a lot of duplicate records from different times of submission (ex: applications for yearly programs coming from the same students in consecutive years, etc.) and Colleague is great at catching these duplicates and presenting them in a clear manner. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** As I mentioned, Colleague can be very daunting at the get-go, and can stay that way for years if the user doesn't use it often or remains unfamiliar with some key elements. I still find myself stumbling around on certain days, and there are admittedly a few key areas in which Colleague could improve. The lack of a list of Forms accessible in the program itself is easily the biggest downside in my opinion, as it becomes a headache of searching/asking around for the proper four letter code, especially if the user happens to be the only one in the office consistently using Colleague (or that particular form in Colleague). **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** As mentioned above, it has made tracking duplicate records a breeze. We're able to keep applicants assigned to one specific ID which we can then use to track them across other platforms that we've linked into Colleague, which is a total lifesaver! ### 23. The financial system allows me to easily see where any reconciling item may be, and allows me reference codes so I may gather further detail. The new capability of using Chrome is a great feature as well because our entire organization is comfortable with the format. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Cost would be by far the biggest issue. The second would be that as of late the company has a tendency to tout its upcoming or just released products will work but in reality it is being built and developed as the sales people speak. To be fair their established software generally works well and no complaints. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** This software has allowed me to be very efficient with my work as I am able to identify any accounting issues that may arise.
