What I like best about Ellucian Banner Student is its ability to centralize and manage the entire student lifecycle within one integrated system. From admissions and registration to financial aid and degree tracking, Banner provides a unified platform that supports collaboration across departments. What I dislike most about Ellucian Banner Student is its outdated user interface and steep learning curve. The system can feel unintuitive, especially for new users or those without technical backgrounds. Many processes require multiple steps that aren’t always clearly labeled or logically organized, which can lead to frustration or errors. Additionally, making even minor system changes or configurations often requires IT involvement or vendor support, which can slow down responsiveness and innovation. There are two Ellucian SIS products: Banner, and Colleague. Colleague is touted as the smaller, cheaper option for smaller schools. Banner is the full-fledged SIS with all the bells and whistles. They have pretty decent documentation, "action line" support, and a forums community. Join your local "Banner Users Group" as well for more resources. Ethos is going to be great for integration but at this time there's not enough stuff using it, and not enough customizability there. Anything you want - Ellucian has, but you need to make sure you set it up right the first time. Go for the training, consultants, all that. They know how to work their product the best. If you're transitioning from one SIS to another, there's no such thing as an easy implementation - it will be a nightmare to transfer all of your stuff. Because it is it's own "beast", it will require extensive training. They're pushing everyone to SaaS which would be fine if you're already moving from one place to another, but if you've been on prem or hosted, it is not a good idea to move to SaaS. Also, their support sucks. You'll find great agents in individual departments but as a whole, they are so silo'd and as soon as a problem isn't specific to that one domain, well, you're going to have issues because they'll throw your ticket back and forth to different departments and point the finger at everyone else. I've been using the Financial Aid screens in Colleague for 20 years. I like that, once you're familiar with the screens, they're laid out in a manner that makes them easy to read and easy to find information.

One of the other features that I use all the time is the tracking of the award history on the AIDE screen, it's good to know who/when changes were made when answering questions from students. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I think one of the biggest downfalls of using the Financial Aid screens in Colleague is that there does not seem to be one master list of screens and what those screens can do for us. We have many reports that our IT department has written for Colon Prompt and Colleague Reports that we need to function on a daily basis and yet I still just ran across a screen in an online blog that nobody in my office knew about, yet did exactly what we have an internal report for. We could've been using this screen all along instead of having to re-create the wheel.

At least for me, when I started using Colleague, the learning curve was pretty steep as there was no guidance or manuals that I could reference as a regular user of the system. You either found the screens you needed or you didn't. The FASI screen is really the only "gateway" screen that will intuitively lead to other screens you need, otherwise you just have to dig around, ask coworkers and hope you can find the information you need.

It would be nice if Ellucian had a list of FA related screens and maybe even a video tour of the main screens and what you can find where for new users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Having to memorize the names for the Banner screens, or not knowing what screens I need to look for. This changed once I started using the software more frequently, but it would be helpful if there could be some sort of index to search from. As a student and staff, I feel that Banner Student provides students with all of the information they need in a single location. I can find eveything I need to know about my courses, my grades, and my transcript, not to mention registration. The biggest feature I dislike about Colleague is the inability to access records that a coworker has open. It wouldn't be so frustrating but usually this "locks" the student record and can cause a hold-up in processing. In my experience, Ellucian PowerCampus support offers minimal customization options. Certain functionalities within the application have consistently malfunctioned over the years, lacking updates or resolutions.
