Colleague is touted as the smaller, cheaper option for smaller schools. Banner is the full-fledged SIS with all the bells and whistles. They have pretty decent documentation, "action line" support, and a forums community. Join your local "Banner Users Group" as well for more resources. Ethos is going to be great for integration but at this time there's not enough stuff using it, and not enough customizability there. Anything you want - Ellucian has, but you need to make sure you set it up right the first time. Go for the training, consultants, all that. They know how to work their product the best. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** If you're transitioning from one SIS to another, there's no such thing as an easy implementation - it will be a nightmare to transfer all of your stuff. Because it is it's own "beast", it will require extensive training. They're pushing everyone to SaaS which would be fine if you're already moving from one place to another, but if you've been on prem or hosted, it is not a good idea to move to SaaS. Also, their support sucks. You'll find great agents in individual departments but as a whole, they are so silo'd and as soon as a problem isn't specific to that one domain, well, you're going to have issues because they'll throw your ticket back and forth to different departments and point the finger at everyone else. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** Ellucian's SIS is pretty much the backbone of the operation - without it, we wouldn't have any student information, course information, grades, etc... ### 6. I like that, once you're familiar with the screens, they're laid out in a manner that makes them easy to read and easy to find information. One of the other features that I use all the time is the tracking of the award history on the AIDE screen, it's good to know who/when changes were made when answering questions from students. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I think one of the biggest downfalls of using the Financial Aid screens in Colleague is that there does not seem to be one master list of screens and what those screens can do for us. We have many reports that our IT department has written for Colon Prompt and Colleague Reports that we need to function on a daily basis and yet I still just ran across a screen in an online blog that nobody in my office knew about, yet did exactly what we have an internal report for. We could've been using this screen all along instead of having to re-create the wheel. At least for me, when I started using Colleague, the learning curve was pretty steep as there was no guidance or manuals that I could reference as a regular user of the system. You either found the screens you needed or you didn't. The FASI screen is really the only "gateway" screen that will intuitively lead to other screens you need, otherwise you just have to dig around, ask coworkers and hope you can find the information you need. It would be nice if Ellucian had a list of FA related screens and maybe even a video tour of the main screens and what you can find where for new users. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** Colleague allows us to easily import FAFSA applications, communicate with students via the email screens and then correct FAFSA's if needed and determine awards. This is a very simple overview of everything that goes into managing the aid for all of our students but Colleague gives us all the tools we need to do our jobs with a high level of confidence and accuracy. ### 7. The interface has been improved in the recent versions. it offers some flexibilities and drills down many levels in each object. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** The large size of Banner limited its flexibility significantly, and for any university that is not following the US standards, Banner will be very difficult to customize and accomodate any special request or diffrent process. the baseline version is very basic and lacks sveral needed functionalities (propoer reporting). The system is not user friendly and can only be used by trained and experianced users. Once you learn how to use it, however, it's not hard. This helps when working with a student to provide snapshot data regarding a student's term-to-term progress. It is also able to be programmed for educational program requirements, including a variety of requirements contingent on prerequisites. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** There is a limitation in educational program projection that a dual major student cannot run a degree audit on both majors at the same time. This seems like a massive blind spot for students. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Understand that Banner is far different than PeopleSoft. PeopleSoft has a far different interface, and is more powerful, but less customizable in the long run. Banner trades off sheer computing power for customizability. I processed the forms and helped to maintain records within the program. It was great! Easy to use and easy to manage, It was also easy to learn. Our organization has a lot of older users that are not always the most computer savvy and it was fairly easy to show them the ropes in just one session. We set us a system where new users need to complete a banner training in order to gain access to the system which works well for us. Finding information within the system is a breeze and the overall look has gotten cleaner in the last few years. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I feel like we already had a lot of different tools that did similar things. While some departments may still use it, others have moved on to using various tools. Working on the back end of things, I mainly just processed the access forms to Banner Student. Even wen I was first learning about the system I did not understand why we needed it at first since I am familiar with a few other systems that did similar things. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** I would give it a try; it is clean and easy to use. The learning curve for using it is not that hard. There are a lot of tools that make it worthwhile and if you are looking to get organized then this tool is a great tool if you can afford it. I feel like it is very pricey if you are a much smaller organization though. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** It helps keep track of student data, scholarships and assists with registration and grading. Since I am not a faculty, I do not use it daily, but I have not had an issue with it when I do use it. In our organization it is mostly used by advisers, staff and faculty that have student employees, staff, financial aid,a nd perhaps the registrar services. In general, the tool helps us keep organized on the day to day. Since I do not work directly with the students, my tasks are limited. But setting up accounts and explaining some of the basic functions has been a breeze. ### 29. What I mainly do is grant access, remove it, edit access, change information on accounts. What I like about Colleague is that it is VERY simple to use, but if you don't know the ins and outs of it, you're going to feel like you're facing a beast. It gets the job done. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I really dislike that it does take up a lot of PERSONNEL resources. We have a team who create mnemonics, screens, etc., our networking guy makes sure its connector is up so people can log in, and then there's me, who just grants access and stuff. It is A LOT of moving pieces and if someone is out (especially our networking guy) and something goes wrong, it can take almost half a day to get it running up again through Ellucian's support. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have been using Ellucian for YEARS, since 2006. To my knowledge, this could otherwise be daunting in other products. I appreciate the ease of Self-Service Banner. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I dislike how it isn't user-friendly and seems a bit outdated. I've worked with other programs-- Raiser's Edge-- for database management. The "self-service" Banner we use (as well as most of the gift officers) is much more "user-friendly" than our INB. That being said, I don't think we're always able to extract the information we need and are limited because of Banner's quirks. We integrate Banner with Reeher and it seems as though most staff utilizes Reeher more because it is much more user-friendly. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Banner to keep track of our student/alumni database. It's graphics are simple, yet appealing, making it easy for any user to appreciate it. The graphics, colors, and fonts are easy to help distinguish different categories of organization, without being overpowering. Additionally, it is incredibly easy to use. It took me just a couple days of training to understand how to best navigate it. I truly believe this software would be a great fit at any office. The software was an irreplaceable asset at my multi-generational office. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** The downside of Colleague is that at times it can glitch and have errors, making it difficult to understand. At times, the software has glitched while I'm using it, and I have had to ask coworkers for help. It will pop up with boxes at times that are unnecessary, which can be distracting when you are trying to help a client. If there were a way for this to be removed, that would be most beneficial to the ease of use, but it does not hinder the software so much that I do not enjoy using it. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** I would most definitely recommend this to any business looking to organize many files under one neat, easy-to-use system. Additionally, I love that it gives student information at the top of the page so you can see the student's basic information, then navigate quickly to more in-depth information. On the admissions side, it has the necessary information to look at a student's application information. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Each screen has a specific acronym that takes a while to remember, meaning, only daily users end up remembering what acronym you need to get to the right screen. Also, it takes several screens to see the complete information of a student's profile. For example, to see an application completely, I have to look at 5 different screens, each with different subtabs. With the new updated, it has been a little more difficult to navigate each screen since it's now more point and click friendly rather than keyboard navigation friendly.
