Datto NAS makes it easy to keep your files backed up **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Graphic Design | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** July 17, 2018 **What do you like best about Datto NAS?** The integration between the Datto NAS device and Datto's cloud backup platform makes it easy to keep your local NAS snapshots backed up off-site. **What do you dislike about Datto NAS?** There is currently an issue with the Active Directory connector to the Datto Drive portion of the product that prevents AD logins from working after a NAS device restart. It requires connecting to the NAS device via SSH and issuing a command to get it working again. According to Datto, this will be resolved in a future software update. **What problems is Datto NAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our backup plan with Datto allows for infinite retention for a fraction of the cost that building a similar solution in-house would have cost. ### 2. Control of network activity and stored files. **What do you dislike about Datto NAS?** Configure all devices to have backup in a personalized account before uploading to the Cloud. **What problems is Datto NAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Backup on the company's local server and every day a final backup is made in the cloud to avoid losing data due to theft or failure of the local server system. ### 4. Can quickly access file restores via SMB shares. **What do you dislike about Datto NAS?** User access options and initial backup setup can be a little cumbersome. **What problems is Datto NAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are now backing up all core appliances and VM's, including critical endpoints. Able to quickly restore deleted files within SMB shares. ### 5. It is easy to remotely administer the device so most often troubleshooting the few and far between issues can be done without an onsite visit to the client office. The Datto Drive Integration is important as it allows users outside of the local network to access shares. **What do you dislike about Datto NAS?** There are not as many protocol options as some NAS like Synology may have. The Active Directory integration could also use some work. I have seen two occasions where the AD integration completely broke leaving the users having to use a public share or use local device logins to access a share. **Recommendations to others considering Datto NAS:** Set up your shares carefully and definitely check to make sure the security settings you have match what you are trying to do. use the active directory plugin to make permissions easier but do be aware that the AD integration is prone to fail. Do use the Datto drive option so that users can access the shares from outside of the company network. Set up is easy and automated so there should be no problem getting it up and going. **What problems is Datto NAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** many small businesses without a need for a full blown server do well using a Datto NAS as a small file server. they are able to create network shares and use the shares even from home. Integrated local and cloud backup makes it doubly useful and convenient. ### 6.
