You can backup to your own desktops or even servers. You can even backup, encrypted, to a friend's computer. And when not using their servers but your own, it's completely free. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** While everything else is amazing, the application itself (the client) is a completely horrible Java software that eats up way too much RAM, is ugly and slow. It's also extremely hard to use if you need to backup a lot of data. An end-user should never have to open a console in an application to increase it's virtual memory limits. But here you do. **Recommendations to others considering CrashPlan SMB:** If you are backing up a lot of data, increase the RAM limits first. **What problems is CrashPlan SMB solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed the ability to backup a lot of data between machines as well as to external servers. ### 2. I install the app on my Mac and pay for the service there. But I have 2 other computers using the free "Friend" backup. I have those backing up to an external HD stored on my Mac with the paid plan. Once it is installed on an end user's machine it just does it thing in the background. The dashboard is simple and easy to use (with one or two minor quirks) and you can schedule regular emails to be notified if backup is not completing for a user. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** The cons are few for this product: Completing certain tasks like changing a password or disabling an account seem counter-intuitive. **Recommendations to others considering CrashPlan SMB:** Make sure you have sufficient bandwidth to support the backup of all your systems. **What problems is CrashPlan SMB solving and how is that benefiting you?** This product firmly addresses the need for end point backup for DR purposes. We utilized PDQ Deploy and Okta to roll out the client to hundreds of systems without the need to disrupt the users. The nature of the Code42 backup throttling allowed us to roll this out without any impact to the user productivity. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** When looking for support on the Enterprise version I find myself reading documentation and discovering it was for the home product. Unlimited backup, unlimited file size, unlimited retention, external hard drive backup, 448 encryption, and you can fine tune it to what you want. The thing that sold me on CrashPlan over the res was that CashPlan will not delete your files from back, even if you delete the file from your computer or external hard drive. The fact that I have control over the restore is another big bonus, other program just drop everything on you in their original place but CrashPlan gives me a zip and allows me to really drill down into my selections. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** CashPlan is slow. It took about a week for me to upload everything the first go around. Even with boosting the speed up to max, with all my photos it was slow. The user interface can also be a little overwhelming at first but once you get use to it and how it works things run smoothly. **Recommendations to others considering CrashPlan SMB:** CashPlan will run in the background while you work, set your away time short so that your speed increases and speeds up your back-up. **What problems is CrashPlan SMB solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have had external hard drives cash on me multiple times. I have had to spend a lot of money sending the drives out to get the photos and docs recovered. CashPlan gives me the piece of mind and back up to never have to worry about that problem again. However, running full backups can quickly consume large amounts of space and time-consuming. Crashplan is an excellent "set it, forget it" companion backup application for both Apple/Windows to protect your data and media files. It runs in the background (its actual resource usage can be fine tuned) and backups incremental changes to multiple destinations including the cloud (paid component), an external drive or even another computer. It uses delta versioning which means if part of a very large file is changed; only that portion is backed up versus backing up the entire file each time. It also periodically verifies the integrity of the backup to ensure they are properly backed up. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** In the event of an OS (system) failure, the OS and apps must be first reinstalled to restore files. Therefore, Crashplan is not substitute for full bootable/image/clone backups. However, the frequency of full image backups can be reduced by using Crashplan to create "snapshots" of files that change frequently. **What problems is CrashPlan SMB solving and how is that benefiting you?** Crashplan adds another layer of protection by allowing backups to be stored in different physical locations whether it be through the iCloud or another computer over the internet. This helps protect files from acts of God such as fire that can wipe out both the original and backup disks if they are stored in the same room/building. ### 15. As a Pro-Photographer my images are my most valuable assets. Having several different hard drives, a SMART-RAID, on- and off-site servers and a cloud based storage space "all under one roof" makes life much more relaxed. All new data or modified data are automatically backed up to various locations. This gives the maximum security possible. Good to know, that in the worst case (some data getting lost locally), there are back within minutes. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** The only little dislike for European customers is the fact that the initial backup is not possible by sending a hard drive to crash plan . But with CrashPlan I simply got my new drive up-and-running, reinstalled CrashPlan, and then did a complete restore to retrieve all of my data. No lost files! I've also used it to retrieve previous versions of files after I've made changes I wanted to revert. I've also switched laptops a couple of times since using CrashPlan, and it's easy to adopt the new machine and continue backup seamlessly. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** The Android app used to work, but no longer does (at least as of approximately a year ago). Tech support had no solutions. Now I find out that Crash Plan Code 42 is no longer supporting any app running on all versions of Windows server OS. It's automated hence configure and forget. It works with very few issues. And for me with a Thinkpad T series Laptop the memory usage was optimal. It runs in background. I am not sure whether the IOS specifically IPAD support is available now. Very little hiccups. The support team is one of the best I've ever dealt with. They are super nice and professional. They don't have 24 hour support but have an answered service that will take your info and they reach out to you right away in the morning. I also love that if I do have to uninstall and reinstall it doesn't ruin the backup. It simply reconciles the files you have on your machine. There is very little I would change. Also, the fact that you can create your own cloud with their software and not have to use their pay service at all says a lot to me. I guess if I had to pick something is that from time to time I have to uninstall and reinstall it because upgrades can go a little wonky with Windows updates. It got to a very confusing point to determine which one was a really good and reliable one. I was willing to pay for a reliable service. After my research, crashplan stood out as a service that looked trustworthy and the price points were reasonable too. I'm on the single PC plan but eventually may upgrade. The crashplan software is fairly straightforward to use. It was easy to set up. It took a while to take the first back up (as expected). **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** When I set it up for the first time, the back up was taken of the folders that I had selected. Later I realized that my newly created/updated files were not being backed up. I had to do a few emails back and forth with the support to get it figured out. What was happening was that the scan for changes was scheduled by default to happen only once a day at early morning. I generally shut down my computer at night. Because of that the scan did not run and hence the backup. Later I changed the frequency of the scan to solve the problem. I was also told by the agent that I can click the "Now" button in the settings to scan on demand. This gives me better control when necessary. The user interface of the software is clean but I think it can be more friendly. It's not a big deal but just an area of improvement. The business version seems very unobtrusive and doesn't bog down my workstation a whole lot. Multiple sources and destinations can be set to maintain backups in a wide variety of places. Plenty of options in the client. **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** Slow uploads to the cloud backup service, and the Java code takes a lot of horsepower to process large files. Large files took a long time to upload on my personal cloud backup subscription. The personal edition needs better Linux support. Trying to run the client in headless mode is an exercise in frustration. A client and subscription model targeted for NAS devices would be wonderful. Some unofficial versions exist but they're not kept up-to-date and sometimes have a steep learning curve to get set up. **Recommendations to others considering CrashPlan SMB:** For personal use, get a free trial first to make sure you have good upload speeds to the cloud backup service. The interface is clean, and easy to understand-- a five-minute run through is enough for most end-users. The online chat support feature is great-- and is a great way to get knowledgeable help right away. The online KB, while comprehensive is not the best for searching for new articles. I find myself using a search engine with terms like "Crashplan server 5.1.2 to 5.3 upgrade" to find the document I need. I love the set-it-and-forget setup. We never have to worry about it-- most customers forget they even have a backup in place-- until they need it! On the flip side-- we've run into issues where someone forgets to reinstall it after a rebuild or system upgrade (because it's so covert). AFAIK, Code42 owns, maintains, and manages their own server farms. So-- they are naturally the best at helping setup a local storage server (if that's what you need). **What do you dislike about CrashPlan SMB?** Our Customer success manager is really busy and rarely replies to emails in a timely manner-- I get it, things are crazy busy-- but don't suggest I contact them before contacting the online chat support features; it simply isn't a viable or useful option. For the PROe version, the co-branding works well, but it's only viewable during initial setup/login and then you don't see it anymore. Not a deal-breaker, but no real value-added there. Sometimes error messages on the client and/or Master Server are vague-- however there are the system logs that allow for very detailed info regarding everything.
