It requires a lot less administration, and many of the workflows that previously needed custom setup or workarounds are built in.The BOM management and ECO workflows have had the biggest impact for us. Our previous change process relied on spreadsheets and email threads to track revisions and approvals, which occasionally led to revisions being missed or the wrong revision being released. Bild centralizes that process and makes it easier to manage bill of materials, revisions, and change orders in one place. **What do you dislike about Bild?** Nothing in particular. Overall, our experience has been good over the past few years. **What problems is Bild solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bild helps us manage revision control, BOMs, and change orders. Before Bild, we spent a lot of time juggling files, tracking revisions, and trying to ensure everyone was working from the latest released data. It wasn’t unusual for people to double-check spreadsheets or send emails just to confirm they were looking at the correct revision. Now engineering, sourcing, and operations are all working in the same system, and ECOs move through approvals without anyone having to manually chase people down for signoff. Overall, the process is much easier to follow, and we’ve reduced a lot of the administrative work tied to engineering changes. ### 2. The app is effective and with some quick setup can make the user keep up to speed and current on revisions with a couple of clicks. Solidworks' collaboration tools allow easy integration of Bild PDM with multi-user environments. **What do you dislike about Bild?** Being a third party PDM, it lacks some of the features that you get with native CAD PDM built-in programs. The renaming folders and files could use some improvement, while preserving metadata. Depending on how the team uses the product, users can often get into a situation where 'getting latest' new files will repeatedly pull HUNDREDS of 'desktop.ini' files, which can get cumbersome on large projects with many users. I like the quick and easy metadata management and built-in feedback options. It's nice to be able to customize the metadata and create different types of data inputs, like dropdown menus. The built-in feedback is very nice to be able to draw and add notes directly to the drawing and submit the feedback for review through Bild itself. This keeps the communication organized and tracked. Bild also allows us to maintain our BOM and create ECOs as well as have an easy-to-use file management system. **What do you dislike about Bild?** The revisioning methods don't work well for our workflow. The revisions up rev on release, and we would like the revision to up rev when we begin editing. This creates confusion when releasing REV 2, because when going back to make edits, it still shows rev 2 during editing and doesn't change to rev 3 until after release. Even though rev 2 has been released, it says rev 2 as we're making changes towards the next design. We would also like to edit file names in BILD without breaking SolidWorks links. The initial setup took time, needing manual creation of levels in our Excel BOM before uploading to BILD. Uploading files for new projects is also time-consuming; we want to name parts by Part Number but can't until uploaded into BILD. Afterwards, renaming required doing it outside BILD, then uploading and pairing with the old name. Additionally, we'd like to add raw PDFs to ECOs and have them download when exporting PDFs. **What problems is Bild solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bild simplifies file sharing and organization, automates BOM management reducing errors, and offers easy metadata customization with built-in feedback. I frequently run into bugs such as not being able to log in or the Solidworks integration not working. It also periodically does not handle deleted files well and they get recreated. Design library has also allowed us to reduce the variety of hardware on our vehicles as the organization and access to this is easier than ever. - Seamless user permissions control - allows for various access levels and pre-made profiles for general users. - Folder templates keep consistent descriptions, cost, supplier, and check-out staus easy top-down organization. - The check-out system and revision tracking are intuitive and easy for admins to control. - Great video resources and troubleshooting resources. Even when problems aren't solved with these (very rare, they cover most bases) customer support is very available. **What do you dislike about Bild?** - Transition between web browser and desktop app can be a little clunky at times. Some features available in the web browser are not always available in the desktop version (deleting files, forcing check-outs for other users, etc...). Easy enough to work around once you "get" the software and understand how it works (very small learning curve). - It would be great if descriptions for Design Library parts could be in Solidworks. Figuring out the difference between parts without description usually has us going back and forth between Bild and Solidworks, which sometimes slows us down. - BOM Management is not available with student licenses in 2.44.0. Otherwise, software is completely the same between professional and student. - If you as an admin have a part checked out, you cannot delete your part from Bild without checking it in first. Very minor complaint (and I can see why you wouldn't want to delete checked-out parts) but it seems like you should be able to do this. **What problems is Bild solving and how is that benefiting you?** We had a great need for a filesharing solution that was intuitive, easy to integrate, and widely scalable across multiple projects. Bild solves most if not all our issues with this, and we will likely use this software indefinitely as they continue to improve and iterate. ### 17. In our case, we maintain a large assembly for our Fornax rocket, which benefits greatly from the Bild system. Thanks to Bild, we have been able to fix many of the mate and reference faults that had manifested due to the previous CAD management system we used. The customer support is top notch - big thanks to Yeimy who has helped DanSTAR with everything from acquiring Bild to specific usage related questions. **What do you dislike about Bild?** Bild's check-in and check-out system with respect to large assembly files can sometimes be confusing, as it can sometimes neglect to check out certain files that are needed to save a checked-out assembly properly. More specifically this happened when Bild's automatic system didn't recognise that a certain sub-assembly of a large assembly file needed to be checked out along with all the other parts/sub-assemblies in that assembly file, which meant that it couldn't be saved, as the certain sub-assembly file was still read-only (checked in). Whether this was user error or not is unclear, but it was at the very least confusing. **What problems is Bild solving and how is that benefiting you?** DanSTAR's main rocket assembly had many mate and file reference problems, that were very hard to diagnose and with the CAD management system we used previously. When Workbench shut down our team was at a loss as to what service to use. Thankfully Bild was there to restore most of the features, with a seamless transition. Our team was able to integrate into the software with little to no issue, which is great considering that most of the team is made up of people who have never used file revision software before. This is our primary method of revision tracking for our team and with our frequency of use, it has held up well. I appreciate the customer support working with us and our particular situation, to make our transition as easy as possible. The built-in 3D model viewer and annotation features have been a hit throughout our team. Overall, I believe Bild is constantly improving and making useful changes throughout our time using the software. **What do you dislike about Bild?** I would say that the UI on the desktop app could use a bit more polish. I do find there isn't quite the same level of detailed access control, but it's easy enough to create a separate repo folder if you need to have access restrictions. We have found ways to easily implement systems that are important to us and can not implement functions that are not important for us. The implementation was fast and easy, we are able to submit solidworks and binary files for control. We use the design library for parts, but also for templates and other documents. We have implemented automatic part numbering, but setup our solidworks files so that we can also over-ride the automatic part numbering easily by entering a part number (this is sometimes helpful for certain customers or COTS items). We chose BILD because of how lightweight and flexible their system is.
