Simply install the appliance in your virtual environment, get a encryption key (optional, ideal for sharing ami to other aws accounts), and launch your ami. **What do you dislike about AWS Server Migration Service?** It wasnt very transparent to us that compression prevents more than 2TB machines to be migrated. If you need to migrate a system that is more than 2TB then you must disable compression. Also, when migrating something on a Microsoft AD Domain, you have to quarantine the box, remove from domain/change name, rejoin to domain with new name or you will get some errors for object collisions on your AD. **What problems is AWS Server Migration Service solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have legacy products that even our developers are unable to determine dependencies of/for. With SMS, we have been able to lift and shift these boxes without having to re-architect them. Which was huge since we were running out of time on our datacenter. ### 2. Just try your luck disassociating and bouncing the OVA appliance until it can finally import the server catalog. And then once the replication starts, it's slower than molasses in January. 4 hours on a modest sized server with two of those hours stuck at 2% upload and green status across the board. Its a very good and managed service provided by amazon to move our servers and make them good. **What do you dislike about AWS Server Migration Service?** It have main impact and dislike that all amazon services are not available in all zones. Also reporting seems lacking given that you could be running a migration and fail 2+ hours into the migration without any good troubleshooting info. **What problems is AWS Server Migration Service solving and how is that benefiting you?** Migrating our on-prem VMware virtual machines onto AWS EC2 instances.
