What do you dislike about AWS Firewall Manager? This service delivers the most value in multi-account AWS environments. In smaller deployments, though, the setup effort and ongoing policy-management overhead can feel unnecessary. Getting comfortable with policy inheritance and remediation actions also takes some familiarity with AWS security services. Troubleshooting policies can be challenging at times, especially when multiple AWS security services are interacting. Figuring out why a resource is marked non-compliant may require looking across AWS Config, WAF, Organizations, and Firewall Manager policies together to see how they combine. We use Firewall Manager to enforce AWS WAF policies across multiple application environments. AWS Firewall Manager has genuinely simplified how we manage security across our organization. The biggest win for us is centralized policy management: instead of logging into multiple AWS accounts to configure WAF rules and security groups, we can handle everything from a single dashboard. That alone has saved our team countless hours every month. Automation is another major plus. We set policies once, and they automatically apply across all our accounts and resources. That consistency is crucial for us, especially as we scale. There are no more “forgot to update that one account” situations the kind of gaps that used to come back and bite us. The interface can feel overwhelming at first, and the documentation isn’t always as clear as it could be. We also had to spend a fair amount of time working out the best way to structure our policies. Pricing can add up depending on how many rules and resources you’re managing. It’s not an unexpected cost, but it’s something you’ll want to plan and budget for as you scale. Advanced filtering and custom reporting also feel somewhat limited. Every time we needed to update a firewall rule or security policy, we’d have to log into each account separately and make the same changes over and over. It was time consuming, error prone, and we constantly worried we’d miss something important. We also had no way to enforce consistent security standards across all our accounts. One team might have different rules than another, creating gaps in our security. When auditors came around, proving our security was solid was painful because we couldn’t show a unified picture. The best thing about AWS Firewall Manager is that it lets me control security rules for many AWS accounts at the same time from one single place. Before using it, I had to go into each account one by one and set up rules by hand. That was slow, easy to mess up, and very tiring. What I dislike about AWS Firewall Manager is that it can be hard to understand at first, especially for beginners. The setup process and policy configuration feel complex and not very user friendly, so it takes time to get comfortable with how everything fits together. When something doesn’t work as expected, it can also be difficult to troubleshoot and figure out where the issue is coming from. Another downside is that the pricing isn’t very clear, and it can become expensive depending on usage. AWS Firewall Manager charges you per policy, per region, per account every month. If you have 10 accounts and 5 policies across 3 regions, the bill adds up fast, and that’s on top of what you already pay for WAF, Shield, or Security Groups. What problems is AWS Firewall Manager solving and how is that benefiting you? AWS Firewall Manager is helping solve the problem of managing security across multiple AWS accounts. Before using it, it was difficult and time consuming to set up and maintain firewall rules separately for each account. Now I can create a single policy and apply it everywhere, which saves time and keeps things consistent. Managing firewall rules across many AWS accounts was a nightmare before this. In my job, I manage security for over 30 AWS accounts. Before AWS Firewall Manager, every time a new security rule had to be added whether it was a new WAF rule or a new Security Group policy I had to go into each account manually and repeat the same steps again and again. It was slow, boring, and very easy to miss one account. One missed account means one open door for an attacker, and that is not acceptable in security work. It also improves security by making sure all accounts follow the same rules, which reduces the risk of mistakes or gaps. While working with Amazon firewall manager I found three interesting and good to have services: 1. When we were working with multiple resources it helped us to maintain the account of those resources 2. By giving the unique tags to each resources it not only helped in maintaining the client level security but also added advantage to uniquely identify each resources 3. As we know that it is the AWS so it would have been dealing with EC2 instance and this itself is a limitation as default limit per region - 20 which seems less when our team wanted to work with more regions ( multiple resources from different regions ) Though if you can work under this limitation then security wise it is the game changer.
