The configuration options to specify how and when to scale, paying less for only using the resources you currently need and the ability to have multiple different instance types. I find occasionally it won't shutdown instances with issues right away so occasionally it requires manual intervention I.e. a server has a process which gets out of control and the CPU spikes to 100% consistently, AWS won't shut it down for replacement, instead I have terminate manually. We have peaks and dips in traffic, automating makes it easy to deploy or remove resources in accordance with this pattern to ensure we are only using and paying for the services as and when required.
