What takes me the longest time is when I receive a dwg and then need to use it as an x ref, having control of editing the layers and then the layers within the block can take time which seems like a waste. Maybe the way we edit block layers can be done quicker or better, maybe a full set layer that really changes everything set within the block to my chosen layer. So perhaps a new command that overwrites the properties within the block to a chosen layer or a more streamlined approach for editing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

AutoCAD remains as one of the best CAD software I ever used. It has a long-standing history whereas it was a precursor to various CAD software like Inventor and Fusion. I like how I can create full-on technical 2D drawings and digital graphics for various things; art, assembly drawings and many site plans and detailed drawings! The Windows version, unlike Fusion, remains our primary dependency if we still require specialized toolkits specific to disciplines such as Electrical, Architecture, and/or Civil 3D. My company utilizes these specialized toolkits. While macOS supports LISP and approximately 90% of the same standard features (excluding the specialized toolkits), you’ll still need to obtain the Windows version for these functionalities that ain't there. Additionally, you’ll need to purchase third-party add-ons or the IDE-built-in Visual LISP for these tasks. However, it’s possible to load universal AutoLISP routines in the Mac version that can replicate features from the add-ons or subversions. Furthermore, you’ll require higher specifications on your machine to render or perform 3D/large drawings, which is why I upgraded the RAM on my MacBook Pro. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I like AutoCAD because it’s easy to use, highly precise, and great for creating detailed 2D mechanical drawings. The drafting tools, dimensioning options, layer controls, and editing features help me work faster and keep the design process efficient. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

The interface can feel a bit complex for beginners, and some of the more advanced features take time to learn. Large or highly detailed drawings can also start to run slowly, and the 3D modeling tools feel less intuitive than in dedicated 3D CAD software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What I like about AutoCAD is that it’s easy to work in 2D or basic 3D for creating drawings and editing sketches. It also supports 2D drafting, which makes it straightforward to prepare manufacturing 2D drawings to send to the workshop. One thing I dislike about AutoCAD is that complex drawings can become difficult to manage and edit, especially when there are many layers, blocks, and references. I appreciate AutoCAD for its familiarity, especially for older instructors who find the UI to align with what they've previously trained in. As an educator, I like that AutoCAD offers a happy medium between traditional software and more modern parametric tools like Autodesk Fusion. Its ability to seamlessly design without having to redraw, using dynamic blocks, is incredibly valuable. This feature allows for multiple iterations within the workflow without the need to redesign for things like fitment and economics. AutoCAD, while very useful, can be a bit limiting when it comes to parametric design, which wasn't its original design focus. I find that 2D modeling and drawing is mainly where its capabilities top out. This can make it difficult and slow to quickly sketch up new concepts, as the conversation with the commands sometimes bogs down the process. Additionally, it would be great if AutoCAD could be more integrated with other Autodesk products like Autodesk Fusion, rather than having to juggle between them, so it could combine the strengths of documentation in AutoCAD with parametric design in Fusion. A simple application for working with layouts and for 3D modeling when parametric modeling isn’t required, and it also allows for rapid changes. The ease of using xrefs to break out facilities allows multiple users to work in a single project while easily referencing other drawings.

This is even better in Plant 3D. The Project Manager lets us structure a project in a way that makes it easy to split disciplines and manage both 2D and 3D layouts. When I need to make a 3D block for equipment, I find I can model it much faster in AutoCAD than I could in Fusion, Inventor, or SolidWorks. Once you get used to moving your UCS around, you can build models quickly. We often need to do this starting from either 2D DWG files or PDFs.

Plant 3D takes it further by letting us create smart equipment blocks, assign ports and connection types, and also assign a tag to the object. Overall, it’s an extremely versatile application, and I think that versatility is its biggest strength. With applications like SolidWorks or Inventor, you need to model with constraints, and for something like a pump you end up needing a lot of sketches and combinations; turning that into equipment for a site layout gets complicated very quickly. Tends to be unstable and can/will corrupt files. Poor support for mesh and working with point clouds out of the box. Frequent install issues requiring it to be reinstalled. I have keyboard shortcuts that work differently on two different computers. It feels like the program is stuck in the past when it comes to 3D and can bog down, little to no GPU utilization when we are seeing other applications using the GPU and seems to still prefer high speed single core rather then multi-core. I understand that this requires a substantial change to implement but really feels like it's an area where AutoCAD is lacking. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I like AutoCAD for its ease of use, and I find it is easy to find help online. Since AutoCAD is widely used, most issues are documented online, and any unique issues are usually answered relatively fast. The initial setup was easy, as we didn't need to do much to get it going. I find it challenging that there are so many commands in AutoCAD that I keep discovering. It would be helpful if there was an index of commands with descriptions to easily find some of the less obvious commands.
