**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2025

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

The level of customization of Asterisk is unmatched allowing us to adapt it to the specific needs of our telephony infrastructure; thanks to AGI scripts we extend its functionalities, automating processes and improving operational efficiency. It's remarkable its ability to manage multiple SIP Trunks and operate with more than one provider at a time which gives us stability to optimize costs by choosing the best route for each call.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

Asterisk is a very flexible tool and offers absolute control over telephony but its initial configuration is almost a challenge because we have to manually define each parameter and that becomes a meticulous process of testing and tuning to find the optimal configuration.

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

By using Asterisk we make sure that interactions with customers and students are recorded and centralized; it also allows us to achieve a hybrid configuration with fixed IP telephony equipment and virtual lines on portable devices so there is no problem with staff mobility as calls can be managed from any location.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 02, 2021

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

I love that we can use asterisk to replace high cost high-cost systems completely, and there is great support online for the various issues that you may run into. Asterisk is by far one of the best examples of community-supported systems.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

Sometimes asterisk has issues that take a lot of technical expertise to fix, and sometimes those things can take a while to muddle through. Often it is better to only install security upgrades, instead of feature upgrades, to avoid breaking the system.

**Recommendations to others considering Asterisk:**

Be sure to have an experienced asterisk expert help with the setup and have that person be on standby because when issues come up, they should be able to be dealt with quckly. Telephone problems are serious problems!

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Asterisk is a complete solution for telephony-related products. I have entirely revised many phone system issues with it, and it has texting support baked in with many installs.

  ### 7. Best calling software.

a configuration setting is very complicated in asterisk. I will give him only one suggestion please, provide more documentation of the asterisk configuration file and video.

**Recommendations to others considering Asterisk:**

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I create a call center setup in our on-premises area network and create my own version of UI view.

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

I love that it is open source.Flexibility and integration to me is key to any system I would consider adding to a business platform. We have been using asterisk for almost 14 years and have been able to shed many bills with it's usage.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

My dislike is not for asterisk but those front ends who come in and try to commercialize the product .

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We've managed to build a robust communication system between our branches around this platform.

  ### 10. Fantastic VOIP system!

Telephone communication throughout our corporate office and our external warehouse locations.

  ### 11. Best OpenSource PBX system so far, flexible, robust and highly recommended.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** sooraj K. | System Test Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 26, 2020

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

its powerful, flexible and easy to integrate with various industry standard tools. Reliable and robust even under test of "1000 simultaneous calls with RTP" without compromising Calls quality! That's really great about it! It's CLI support a wide range of hardware and software tools.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

maybe on support point of view I see there should be a central database or library for user-cases so anyone can start quickly on production level, with help of this along with available wiki and documentation.

**Recommendations to others considering Asterisk:**

Asterisk in voip world is one of the best, you should definitely check it once to know what all it can offer, as PBX, small or big phone system. with it's abilities to integrate easily with a lot of other tools and easy CLI you can achieve almost everything what any other costly standard system offers! all the best with asterisk!

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have been using it since it's asterisk-1.6 to asterisk- 13 as PBX, sip-trunks and PRI-lines to test simultaneous RTP calls (not just signalling) that upto 1000! on my intel i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz. after doing a lot of research I found this best suited for my work where asterisk does not add any significant delay or call-quality error. As an open source asterisk gives so much! Automating everything is not that tough when you become familiar with its Command line sets.

  ### 12. A nice Open Source PBX/VoIP package that fits in every business

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jorge Carlos F. | Expert System Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2020

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

Modular, easy to integrate, Open Source. With a little effort you can improve the phone communications in SOHO or medium company, one of the strengths of Asterisk is the ability of build a heterogeneous system. You can use PCI or PCIe telephony interfaces or media gateways (Patton, Grand Stream, etc.) to connect your PBX to the landline or cell network.
Also you can choose between some Asterisk based distributions (can be downloaded in ISO format) in order to install a dedicated system with a rich web interface in order to configure the PBX, those are highly recommended for the first installations in order to abstract the complexity of the text based configuration. Obviously it gives the opportunity to build complex systems/architectures but as all the other things it require several years of experience.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

The first approach isn't very easy, but as all the new things. After reading the documentation you can get the work done.
On the other hand I can't find other points to dislike, within the years of Asterisk user I've never found a headache situation regarding the operations of the PBX built with Asterisk. For this reason I recommend it to those that are searching the workhorse of their telephony system project.

**Recommendations to others considering Asterisk:**

Is a very convenient solution with many possibilities to improve the communications of your business

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using the Asterisk PBX we've solved some complexities with a very convenient investment (not only the time).

We had direct connections to mobile operators, landline operators, etc.
We had been serving short numbers like 111, 123, 911, etc.
We had been serving the Eurovision Contest as a call center.
We had been handling and billing tens of million SMS and USSD a month.
We had a vast majority of connecions with different equipment like Panasonic, LG, Nortel, etc.
We had a full zoo of different connection: PRI, FXO, FXS, SIP, H323, and a lot of written ourself to accomplish our tasks.
A lot of AGI/AMI applications.
A lot of business tasks had been solved.
Without Asterisk, we couldn't comply and fulfill all the challenges that were given to us.

  ### 47. The open source backbone of SMB communications

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** William F. | Chief Operating Officer, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 03, 2017

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

Asterisk is flexible. It can do nearly anything you need in regards to communication. Need to send an SMS text? Asterisk has a module that can do that. Need to interface with a really old phone system to make it interop with new SIP technologies? Asterisk can do this as well.

It can provide the backbone of nearly any business or personal communication you need to make.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

As backbones go, it is very robust, but to truly take advantage of most of it's flexibility you need to be able to provide code in the form of PHP for the AGI interface or dialplan on the config files. This can get convoluted since there are few resources online to tech yourself how to code AGI or write dialplans.

**Recommendations to others considering Asterisk:**

Asterisk is the core of a communications solution, but it is just as important to find a good interface for Asterisk. The most popular is FreePBX, but there are many other interfaces that can be more efficient depending on your needs.

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Asterisk is the core of our business phone system. But it also serves a larger role in our communications networks for our customers as well. From providing dialtone for customers to offering conference calling platforms for business use, Asterisk solves most communication problems.

  ### 49. The true value of Asterisk

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 20, 2017

**What do you like best about Asterisk?**

The reliability and the versatility of the platform.

**What do you dislike about Asterisk?**

Not much really given that one has to be fully committed to fully understanding the platform and how to use it before actually exploiting the full power it can bring to your business.

**Recommendations to others considering Asterisk:**

As an end user, or a provider, you must be committed to the platform and acquire or develop expertise in-house to properly make use of it. However, once this commitment is made, the rewards can flow interminably. We would never consider an alternative at this point.

**What problems is Asterisk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Asterisk is at the core of our product suite. We provide UCaaS cloud services to our customers and Asterisk serves as the engine for the telecommunications side of the business. I recall a representative, from a highly respected Session Border Controller manufacturer, once saying to me "you should consider using our extended product suite to offer cloud services. I thought about this statement and quickly replied " Asterisk provides us so much value that any alternative, specially a hardware based industry solution, would not come close to providing." That was 6 years ago. Today I am doubling down on that statement as we continue to expand our service offering while incorporating the latest Asterisk version.
