Wanted to connect to some of our Enterprise tools to manage users, but that requries an update to Enterprise licensing for which we really dont get any value outside of the LDAP/AD integration. So manual user management becomes the default for this set of tools. **What problems is Altium Develop solving and how is that benefiting you?** With a large set of tools from most CAD vendors, Altium Designer makes PCB design and PCB workflow manegement very easy. ### 2. Easy to share even to accounts without a license. The Online Viewer is really good. The "Save to server" option is the best for just pushing your work without any additional hustle. it is easy to review a Project and leave comments to the designer. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** The severs had few maintainence periods during my use which rendered the service completly useless. It was impossible for me to transfer the ownership of my workspace to another member who had a license. I couldn't get help from customer support because "I had a student license" which ,even though I am thankful for, makes me unable to even review their customer support. Designing components and then uploading them to the workspace wasn't the best experience unlike designing PCBs. **What problems is Altium Develop solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Altium 365 with my technical team in which I am the head of the hardware Subteam. Previously, sharing project was by just sending the design files which is really not the best thing to do or by using github which is really good for the job except the fact that you can't preview a PCB and you cann't easily leave comments to other designers. Altium 365 helped me and my colleages to just review all the projects the team was doing . ### 4. Comments are easy to use and flexible. Version history is well implemented, and the possibility to restore previous version is very useful. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** I had some troubles adding components to the shared library when importing components through the samacsys tool, but perhaps is my fault. Sometimes it was hard to identify solutions to some problem, just by looking at the documentation, but likely is due to the large amount of information, that may shadow the relevant ones. **What problems is Altium Develop solving and how is that benefiting you?** I used it for around 6 months, as part time activity in a university association in collaboration with a team of 2/3 people. My role was to design the circuits to control the power sources of a hydrogen fueled catamaran, to run at a international boat competition. There is no need to request additional permissions for internal project folders to access the design data or review the documentation released to production. - As I typically use Altium to review schematics and layouts, having the option to use altium 365 allows me to access the design schematics more frequently, as opening the browser is much faster than opening tha Altium application. -Cross Probe function (to locate the traces assigned to a schematic net) is easier to use than on the Altium application. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** - The management of BOM variants should be clearer to avoid schematic misinterpretations. Sometimes, when reviewing a schematic, a mount variant is not selected, and not-mounted resistors appear as mounted, leading to misinterpretations. I think having a default BOM variant selected when opening Altium 365 (different than the "[No Variations]" variant) would avoid confusion when reviewing the schematics. - Altium 356 should have management of PCB revisions. Currently, we are managing revisions with a suffix on the design folder, and if we want to switch revisions, we need to go to the shared folder and find the required revision. Having the option to move between revisions on the same project view would make this process effortless. **What problems is Altium Develop solving and how is that benefiting you?** Altium 365 is a common workspace were we upload the PCB designs for out products and share it among all our collegues. Having an integrated schematic and layout viewer, allows us to review different electronic designs easily without the need to have permissions to acces each project folders, this speeds up the design and review process. Typicaly software and FPGA developers do not have Altium installed on their computers and this tool allows them to check PCB design as if they were using Altium application. Before having this tool available, we were using pdf prints with their limitations (it was difficult to jump between schmatic sheets while following a electronic design spread out between multiple sheets). ### 8. It has a good amount of add-ons that add expanded capabilities no other competitors have. Alitum makes it easy to organize workloads and to enable easy callaboration between teams. Easy to implement new designs from beginning to end. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** Add-ons such as EMI tools are quiet pricey but those are not used by all altium users. The clean user interface and cloud integration make it easy to share and manage designs including with other team members. Good range of import and export capabilities which are fabulous for working with clients and projects who sometimes use different design software. Appreciate the dedicated customer support model, and the frequent webinars and video tutorials which are offered throughout the year. Also appreciated the support provided during severe industry downturns such as during the Covid years which (in my opinion) really demonstrated a genuine level of care for their customers. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** Can sometimes be a little pricey for small businesses or start-ups - who arguably might be able to use cheaper competitive offerings with less features - but on the other hand the quality of the Altium offering ultimately stands out compared to other platforms. Friendly and intuitive online collaboration with Altium 365 **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** September 15, 2023 **What do you like best about Altium Develop?** I've been using Altium in my daily job for about 10 years, but the introduction of Altium 365 meant an undeniable improvement in terms of collaboration between different people/departments, both internally in the company and for sharing designs with clients. It's extremely easy now to share the design in any of its phases. The most useful feature for us is that Altium 365 allows to include any member of the company in the workspace and give them read or write access to each project or to specific projects. We use it for reviews during the design phase and also to create releases once a board is produced, so that the software department, for instance, can access anytime to any version of the project. Thus, they always have clear which HW vesrsion of the boards are in their desks, avoiding lots of misunderstandings for small design changes between versions. In addition, these users don't consume any license, so the designers can continue working without any problem. Ocassinaly we also use Altium 365 to share the design with customers. They only need a free Altium account. This way we waste less timepreparing and sending the project files to our customers. Another good point about Altium 365 is the possibility to push the design directly to the mechanical department, thereby eliminating the need to create tedious step files. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** On the other hand, Altium put a lot of effort into the control of versions and releases of the full product, which is absolutely unnecessary for us since, in our company, we have our own version control system using SVN. It even becomes a problem when a project folder is versioned using both systems. A commit using Altium software doesn't always upload the files to both systems. It always uploads the file to SVN, but not always to the Altium git. Our problem is that we need both systems in parallel, SVN in order to meet our internal requirements and Altium 365 for the collaborative use we make of it. Additionally, our standard nomenclature doesn't match with the Altium nomenclature for releases, so we can not easily integrate both. **What problems is Altium Develop solving and how is that benefiting you?** In the past we had a lot of conversion problems between the STEP files generated by Altium and the imported result by our mechanical team sofware. Now, with just one click the design is pushed to the mechanical team and they can also go back with modifications and so. That is a significant time saving. ### 18. Sharing parts and components is very useful and works well. The process of implementing the tool was relatively simple, and importing our libraries was quick and straight forward. 365 provides quick access to customer support and the helpdesk, as well as a range of online help tools. I use this tool daily to review the work of other and myself. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** Altium 365 doesnt allow you to make any changes to components. It takes some getting used to, but it's very powerful. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** The biggest issue for me, by far, is the lack of sub-file-level merging. It makes working with others on PCB layout difficult because two people can't work on different aeeas of the same file at the same time. Another complaint I have is that the default default settings are awful at times. For instance, the default is for polygons to default to not connecting to same-net objects, and if you don't realize this is a setting it results in a lot of wasted time trying to figure it out. I'd recommend it for designs up to 3000-4000 components max. **What do you dislike about Altium Develop?** Having to pay for cloud services by keeping subscription current, and some common things that are needed to move components to cloud or back to local libraries are missing. They are possible but in a very convoluted way. After about 4K parts in a design things get really slow even on overclocked super fast computer. The pcb rules manager is not as comprehensive as one would like - it's very simplistic really, however, adequate for many things. **What problems is Altium Develop solving and how is that benefiting you?** It's nice to be able to collaborate online through the portal when working with multiple engineers or projects that need to be examined by (especially) remote team members. Routing is fairly easy by hand in Altium.
