**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Health, Wellness and Fitness | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 26, 2024

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It is user friendly, easy to design and build a study database even for a first-time user.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

It does not provide a good data approving function that a multi-centre clinical study requires. REDCap has 'data resolution workflow' and 'form locking' to help with verifying data, but for a multi-centre study, which requires several layers of data approval including data manager review, source data verification and PI review. REDCap does not satisfy these needs.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Clinical study database for data capture and managment. Collecting participant reponses via survey distribution.

  ### 5. Secure database

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sukran Bahar S. | Graduate Student, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 04, 2021

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I use REDCap at my workplace as a secure database. We are a psychology lab, and we do research with human subjects, which has strict regulations in terms of how we store confidential information, including contact and personal data of our participants. We provide a survey link from our website for people to sign up. Once people are in the database, it is easy to filter through parameters of interest to export lists of names to contact for a particular study. Different users can have different roles and levels of access which is also helpful, so I can have members of the team working on specific tasks without worrying about them changing settings that I don't want to be touched.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The layout is not very intuitive. It can take some time to play around with the website to figure out how to use it, mainly when exporting sub-lists; however, the learning curve isn't that steep. A couple of hours of exploring should make you pretty proficient in using all the features.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

I highly recommend it to people who are looking for secure databases. It may look daunting for the first half an hour or so, but it really isn't tricky getting used to it. It's definitely helped to keep track of participants in our lab.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using REDCap as a secure database because my institution doesn't have an internal database within our intranet. I can make sure that the information here is stored securely and using REDCap as a database is approved by the Institutional Review Board, at least in my institution.

  ### 6. RedCap database

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bozana Z. | Clinical Research Project Manger, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 05, 2023

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Building the RedCap database is straightforward and does not require previous knowledge of data management. Also, it allows many users to enter the data in the database at the same time. There are different levels of access depending on the role in the clinical study or trial. Mostly, you can create different reports and perform a statistical analysis of the data. RedCap includes the newest statistical software such as SAS.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

When you have a very robust data set, it takes time to download/export data into the report. In addition, there are a few data sets you can download by one report. For a big database, you need to repeat the downloading steps for each set of data. Sometimes it can be very time-consuming.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When you have many users they can enter the data at any time without interfering with the quality of data.

  ### 7. Affordable and user friendly resource

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 26, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Usability, ability to have external sites enter information directly into the system so we can access it, ability to put restrictions on fields so they are entered correctly.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Can be hard to set up some of the more sophisticated checks and cleaning features, and does not create paper forms from the database that are compact and easily usable- often have to re-create our own.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Absolutely worth learning/ has lots of capabilities!

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use REDCap for research databases, surveys and eConsents. It is quick, easy, secure and offers the ability to run checks and queries for values that are not as you would expect them to be to ensure accurate data is input to the system.

1. Form designer is user-friendly and customizable according to paper CRF.
2. Can easily program complex skip patterns and logic.
3. Query tracking within form is fantastic, which saves lot of time tracking outside in excel or anything.
4. Dashboard feature provides all insights in a glance concerning the completeness of the forms.
5. Data export in all possible analytical data formats is possible like csv, spss, stata, etc.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

1. Data export does export of all the data, which is complex to look into, instead of individual form wise data export will be easier to examine.
2. Not much features which you dislike.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1. Data quality in terms of completeness of all the questions by keeping all the questions mandatory.
2. Query resolution within forms saves from creating different excel trackers and following up with concerned users several times.

  ### 12. RedCap Review - MIron

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Taylor M. | Wellness Coordinator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 03, 2018

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I loved that REDCap gave me the ability to see all other appointments that my participants had completed. I was in charge of Fitness Consults and it was very helpful to see if they had completed a health screening or a nutrition consult, prior to coming to see me. It allowed me as a provider to better serve them and use previous experience to create a more personalized environment and really engage with each person directly. It made participants feel as though I did my research on them.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The main thing that I disliked about REDCap was when you were searching for a specific person. If you were searching using first name, last name, date, etc. it would populate lots of different results. There was no additional ways to filter through this information except to choose each one individually and hope that you were correct. I thought this process could have been smoother. I also thought that the excel reports that you can export could use a bit of cleanup. Many reports were very confusing to understand the data at hand.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of the main business problem that using REDCap solved was the ability for all members of our organizational team to view history and data on active and/or past participants. It allowed us to create a more personalized and professional environment where we were aware of all appointments that they completed to better serve them as providers.

**Official Response from Brenda Minor:**

> Thanks for the positive review! I'm glad that REDCap has been a good solution for your team. I hope that as your use it more, the reports will become easier to design for your specific needs. Perhaps your local REDCap administrator can assist you. Each institution has its own individual installation and support team for REDCap.

Expect a learning curve, will take a while to get good at using this program. Very self-service.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Seek out someone that really knows REDCap to get you started. Once you've mastered the first few skills you'll be off to the races!

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Patient eligibility and screening.

REDCap has an outstanding ability to be configured to handle a wide variety of research needs. You can learn and custom build it yourself for just about any study.

  ### 14. Very useful once you feel confident using it

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amanda W. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2021

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap has all the features I want and need for data collection. Having the ability to build your project to your specifications is incredibly useful and makes the analysis part much more efficient and straightforward. Once you have a project built, it is easy to collect data and keep it all in one secure location. For my job specifically, REDCap being HIPAA compliant is a huge advantage.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

There is a rather steep learning curve in using REDCap if you are building a project or form from scratch. It may take a lot of trial and error to figure out what works best for your project, and you often have to do quite a bit of thinking ahead to decide what to include or not.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Take time to play around with the program and create projects to learn what you're doing before diving headfirst into real data collection.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using REDCap, multiple users can collect and access data in one place from wherever they are. In the pandemic, that has been incredibly useful since we are mainly working remotely.

  ### 15. Excellent Data Collection & Storage System

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zachary Z. | Student, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 20, 2021

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Simply put, RedCap is the only real data collection and storage system out there -- it is the default system used by many organizations, and this is because, at its most fundamental, it does everything that it is asked to do. It is highly customizable, allowing users to create inputs and outputs of their choosing. Data is wildly easy to manipulate and even transform into graphs of all sorts. For years-long research projects, it offers a secure storage space in which information across years or even decades can be accumulated. All together, RedCap has every feature one might expect or even need from a data collection system.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

There really is only very little to dislike about RedCap because it genuinely does offer so many features. Personally, RedCap's only deficiency is the visual aspect of its user interface. Simply put, it looks like a website built at the dawn of the internet -- gray and with small, boring text. The buttons are small, the alerts are small, and the different spaces within the software are clustered together unnecessarily. While these critiques are admittedly superficial, if RedCap were to update its visual aesthetics, it would be nearly perfect software.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

The only recommendation is to purchase this software if you are in need of data collection software. It's as simple as that.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

RedCap solves the problem of data collection and storage, and it does so in spades. It is simple to use if unexciting, and at the end of the day, it will get the job done.

  ### 16. You need training to fully understand how it works

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

eConsenting makes it easier for research subjects through email, especially in times of pandemic where we need to consent subjects remotely.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

It is a bit complicated to set up if you try to do so without training. In that aspect, it is not very user-friendly.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

It is a great tool if learned to use properly. You will need help and practice to get around it efficiently.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

eConsenting during times of pandemic where remote consenting has basically become the new norm.

  ### 17. my REDCap experience

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brittany Ann S. | Student Researcher, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 15, 2021

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It is relatively easy to use once you get the hang of how it works. The commands are relatively straightforward, with nothing too involved or complex. It is reliable and I have been using it over the course of a few years. Overall, it is a good way to keep information organized in a way that makes it easy to look up .I work with a patient information database that I need to pull information from and put data into regularly. It has helped me locate records with ease to have access to the information as soon as I need it.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

At the onset, some of the features may be counterintuitive, plus design-wise, it looks pretty dated, like the software you would see in the early 0000s, but it gets the job done. I would rather it be simple than over-complicated at all. It can be frustrating to look up old records; sometimes, the search terms that I use that I know are within the record don't show up when I perform a search for them. Then I have to go in and comb through some of our records manually.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

It would be cool if it generated more usage stats so that I could quantify how it has benefitted me over time.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work with a patient information database that I need to pull information from and put data into regularly. It has helped me locate records with ease to have access to the information as soon as I need it.

  ### 18. Not Intuitive, but user friendy

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2018

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

I've been using RedCap for a number of years, first in about 2013 for survey building at a prior company, and am currently using it for program management. I find REDCap easy enough to navigate after you figure out where in the many links, is the task you're attempting to accomplish,

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The one thing that peeves me is reviewing the tool, as you’re making it, specifically when I'm checking on branching logic. To me, that should be more easily accessible from the page where you build the tool, and not through the "manage instrument" section

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

REDCap is a great data entry tool, but can leave much to be desired as a management tool. There’s a lot of work that I have to do in “cleaning” data that I would rather not do to be able to analyze it. Proficiency in Excel (at minimum) is a must if you’re going to use RedCap.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

REDCap makes it easy for me to build the tools, I need, and is generally easy to follow by staff members who I need to collect information from after it's built.

  ### 19. Great tool for Clinical Data Management

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ramya K. | Administrator, National Administration, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 23, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Its easy to learn and tool is user institutive .The design is pretty straightforward, and it allows other functions like API and linking to a survey. The report that Redcap generates is convenient for data export and statistical analysis.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

In some cases, not all, it could take a very long time to get approval to make any sort of portal changes, such as adding a second date option or adding a field. Sometimes this would mean certain patients would have a specific type of record and others would be missing it.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Its a great Electronic Data Capture tool and easy to feed and analyze the data.
Also it enables easy Data import and export to analyze statistically further.
Tool is user Intuitive and great problem solver.

It helps researchers collect data, conduct surveys, and process them while maintaining HIPPA compliance throughout the data lifecycle. Variety of use. Being able to send both surveys and create forms for internal use makes the use cases numerous. Customization. I can use HTML to change format but there are also a ton of built in functionality for branching logic, matrix configuration, slider scales, etc.

Security. HIPPA compliance is extremely important for medical research and REDCap ensures our data is safe. Develop and conduct online survey easily
Allow back office data management securely.

Format options built in, instead of having to use HTML code.
User maintenance can be difficult with collaborators outside of your institution.
In some cases, not all, it could take a very long time to get approval to make any sort of portal changes, such as adding a second date option or adding a field. Sometimes this would mean certain patients would have a specific type of record and others would be missing it.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Longitudinal Data Analysis

  ### 20. Frustrating and tedious

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2021

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

You can choose what you want to be asked in the system but, it is a pain to change.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Having to answer questions that are no longer relevant means having to adjust the whole system to delete them.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The data capture is nice and we have been able to gain insight for the grant

  ### 21. Managing multiple projects for centers and studies.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

The data exporting options and the reports that are searchable, which makes it easy to filter and sort subjects. I find it relatively easy to anonymize the data. Being able to upload PDFs is really helpful for saving forms and tests that you can always use to check the instruments with.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Navigating between records is difficult and data changes in one project can't be synced with another. I can be difficult to create very specific user rights and remove them.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Mainly useful for within a single group. Not great for external secure collaboration. Make sure you understand the user rights fully before assigning any to others. Use the design mode until you are very sure you are happy with your fields and instruments and keep in mind you can't change variable names later. Make multiple reports that you can always easily export and remember that they can be private, so only you can see them. Watching the tutorial videos can be really helpful, especially for creating advanced branching logic. It's easy to do even if you are not familiar with the coding system. Think carefully of what you need to do with the final data when you create the variable types. I often find multiple choice questions are the best for data encoding.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Great benefit is that in design mode you can add more fields and instruments which allows for a lot of flexibility and improvement in record keeping.

  ### 22. REDcap review as clinical data management

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hang Y. | Graduate Research Assistant, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 16, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Good to longtudinal data and easy to learn. The design is pretty straightforward, and it allows other functions like API and linking to a survey. The report is convenient for data export and further analysis.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Inconvenient for multiple inputs within a time, like multiple medical history input in the screening period. Medical history has to be created as repeated input and can't be corporated in the screening evaluation.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

REDcap is available in many institutes/organizations/companies. It is easy to learn and straightforward. It is super useful for clinical or other longitudinal data collection and management. There are also lots of tutorials online. If you are interested, there are a lot of materials to check.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am doing longitudinal clinical data collection and management on REDcap, also REDcap built for clinical trials. REDcap access is free to use for our group and we don't have to rely on an external group to build and modify the database, which is budget-friendly. Also, it is easy to learn and the design is straightforward, so it is easy for the new members to learn or task transition. In addition, REDcap is widely used by multiple groups, there are multiple learning or communicating source if I have any questions.

  ### 23. Powerful, but not user friendly

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kelly S. | Graduate Student Researcher, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 23, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

RedCap is a university-sponsored research tool that allows us to collect data both in-person and remotely (which is perfect during the pandemic!). My favorite part about it is that you can see the progress of the person taking the survey. I conduct research with children with ADHD, so this is very helpful to know if they are actually working or if they are just searching the internet. Additionally, Redcap is very secure and i feel confident knowing that my research data is saved on the site. Finally, they make it easy to start up by allowing you to download pre-made questionnaires or upload questionnaires that someone else made in a csv file. This easily saved me hours of typing and spell-checking.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

RedCap is not user friendly. Things are difficult to even find (not kidding - even the link to get into your university's redcap. Its not on the website or published anywhere, we had to ask an administrator to send us a link). The language that it uses is not consistent with typical research language. That being said, it is a powerful and useful tool and the pros often outweigh the cons.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Use the videos, they will at least get you off to the right start. Additionally, each university has a redcap rep, they are helpful if you get stuck.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Redcap provides a great, very secure system for administering research questionnaires at either one timepoint or multiple timepoints. In a bid to save paper 3 years ago, we tried out RedCap and it has saved thousands upon thousands sheets of paper thus far. Not only is this environmentally friendly, but it has also saved room in my research lab and reduced data entry errors. How you ask? You download the numeric data and it can be copied/pasted directly into whatever dataset you choose - SPSS/Excel/Sas, etc.

  ### 24. REDCap is a convenient database for real-time data capture

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amanda T. | Drug and Consumer Product Safety Researcher II, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

Real-time data capture, integrated data quality checks, audit tracking history, data comparison tools, convenience of a web-based database, comprehensive training tutorials. The new multi-lingual hook makes it easy to translate surveys into different launguages

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

Although REDCap has a lot of functionalities, it is not the most intuitive to use.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

I highly recommend REDCap for data collection and storage. I used it daily for 4 years at my previous company and enjoyed its ease of use, many options for customization, and embedded security features.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

REDCap allows my company to have a secure database for all our projects that can be easily accessed from anywhere. It’s convenient in that we don’t have to VPN in to access data. The audit-tracking is also a great feature for data quality purposes

  ### 25. Review of RedCap for G2

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 14, 2020

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

It's a secure place for storing research data and the version that my company uses is encrypted meaning the information is stored safely and securely. I also use the RedCap External Platform which means that it is extremely useful to use remotely when working offsite which has been extremely helpful during COVID-19 times. The interface is very friendly and there are opportunities available to convert the electronic data forms collected onto an excel spreadsheet and SPSS document for further analysis.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The RedCap website undergoes routine maintenance which can be inconvenient at times. But the team does provide advance notice as to when the platform will be offline.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

It's definitely a very powerful tool for collecting data due to it's high and secure storage capacity and potential to collect large volumes of data from a wide variety of different sources.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 03, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

REDCap is useful for storing all data, mainly for confidentiality purposes, because I work in research, data collection.

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

I do not like that REDCap tends to lag a lot, and the interface is very very old-schooled. Antique, I would say. The logo itself is a pretty good reflection of what the interface for REDCap looks like when you log in. It's just a lot of text everywhere, and the interface is not very "clean."

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

It is great for data management, project management, and especially for if you are working with patient-identifiable information that is confidential. It is also good for creating public surveys or automating surveys to be sent out on a timely basis.

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I don't solve problems in REDCap, but I use the REDCap surveys and within those surveys, there are ways you can create formulas to calculate for data (i.e., weight and height can be used to calculate BMI).

  ### 50. RedCap Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2019

**What do you like best about REDCap?**

The thing I like best about RedCap is that if you are normally using excel sheets to keep track of longitudinal data, RedCap is a much better alternative. You can separate your information into separate forms and it is completely user friendly to create these forms. I love the online designer mode!

**What do you dislike about REDCap?**

The thing I dislike about RedCap is that their FAQ and help pages are not that helpful. If you have questions about something you are trying to do in RedCap, you are much better off googling it and finding a forum of experienced RedCap users.

**Recommendations to others considering REDCap:**

Don't rush through online designer and when it tells you to thoroughly test everything, you should!

**What problems is REDCap solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problems I am solving with RedCap is the information I used to collect in excel was not very user friendly to other people who would need to interpret my spreadsheets. Also, since there was someone doing this project before me, their spreadsheet looked different from mine. There was no standard way of inputting data. However, RedCap has fixed this! Since the forms are created and everyone involved in the project can use these same forms, everything will be inputted in a standard way. It is a massive benefit to not have to worry about needing to explain my spreadsheet.
