# Which App Is Best for Employee Time Tracking?

Exploring which app is best for employee time tracking, especially for small to midsize teams that need visibility into hours worked, productivity, and project costs without micromanagement.
Here are some of the top-rated solutions in G2's Time Tracking Software category. Each tool takes a slightly different approach, so I’m curious which ones teams actually stick with over time.
Toggl Track
Toggl Track is a go-to for teams looking for simplicity without sacrificing insights. It offers easy-to-use timers, tagging by project or client, and reporting that breaks down time use across the day or week. Unlike more invasive tools, it doesn’t track activity behind the scenes—making it a popular choice for teams that value autonomy.
ClickUp
ClickUp includes built-in time tracking that links directly to tasks and goals. It’s ideal for teams already using ClickUp for project or task management and want to consolidate tools. Time can be tracked manually or via a Chrome extension, and reporting lets you view time by person or project. It is best suited for teams that live inside ClickUp already.
Hubstaff
Hubstaff is often used for more granular time tracking, especially for remote or field teams. It includes optional activity monitoring like keyboard/mouse usage, GPS tracking, and even screenshots. Payroll and invoicing features are built in, so it can serve as a broader workforce management tool for businesses with distributed staff.
Clockify
Clockify offers a forever-free plan with time tracking, reporting, and unlimited users, making it appealing to growing teams. It supports both manual and automatic tracking, integrates with over 80 apps, and includes timesheet approvals and audit logs. Teams looking for a cost-effective tool with enough structure for scaling tend to favor it.
TimeCamp
TimeCamp includes productivity tracking and timesheets, with the option for automatic time logging based on activity. It’s helpful for teams that want to track time in the background while still assigning hours to projects or clients. It also supports invoicing, role-based permissions, and budget tracking, which makes it well-suited for billable teams.
monday.com
Monday.com offers time tracking as part of its work management platform. You can add time columns to boards and run basic reports on time per task or project. It’s not a dedicated tracker, but for teams already using Monday.com, it offers just enough to cover light tracking needs—especially when paired with automation or dashboards.

If you’ve used any of these, especially in a growing business or hybrid/remote team setup, I’d love to hear how they’ve performed. Did they support your workflows or just add another layer of admin?

Does Clockify stay reliable as teams grow, or does it start to feel limited without the paid features?

There are lots of time tracking software, even some free ones.

Our company has been sticking with Apploye for the last 4 years. Apploye has time tracking and integrated billing & invoice features.

I never heard any complaints about those features. So, we will be sticking with the Apploye for the future.
