# What's the best social media analytics tool for benchmarking your brand against competitors?

Hey G2 community. I've been digging through the Social Media Analytics Software resources here because I keep hitting the same wall. Most tools will tell you how your own posts did, but actually stacking that up against what competitors are doing is a different problem. A lot of "analytics" tools just don't have a real competitor view, so I went through reviews to see which ones people actually use for this specifically.

Semrush: reviewers mention using its social tracker to compare competitor posting frequency and engagement against their own numbers, useful if you're already on it for SEO.

BuzzSumo: people like it for seeing what content is working for competitors, not just their own account. Good for spotting trends before you post.

Reputation: comes up a lot for benchmarking sentiment and review scores against local competitors, especially for multi-location brands.

Oktopost: fewer mentions, but the ones that exist are B2B teams comparing share of voice on LinkedIn against named competitors.

Vista Social: some reviewers call out its competitor analytics as a newer but well liked add, good for smaller teams that don't want a separate tool just for this.

None of these seem built purely for competitive benchmarking, it's more of a feature sitting inside a broader platform. Has anyone switched tools specifically because one had better competitor tracking than another? And is anyone running a dedicated competitive intelligence tool alongside their main analytics platform instead of expecting one product to do both?

Social Media Analytics reviews on G2 for Semrush specifically turn out to be a much smaller and messier slice than its overall review count suggests. Most of what shows up under that category tag is still praise for the core SEO and keyword tools, with social-specific feedback appearing far less often and skewing toward complaints, broken Instagram insights, out-of-date LinkedIn data, a social dashboard reviewers call cluttered, rather than praise for competitor benchmarking specifically. That doesn't mean the feature doesn't work, but it does mean the enthusiasm reviewers show for Semrush overall doesn't carry over cleanly to this one specific use case, which is worth knowing before picking it for benchmarking alone.

The post's instinct that competitive benchmarking is usually a feature bolted onto a broader platform rather than a dedicated product seems right, and that's exactly the kind of feature that tends to get less investment and more complaints than the tool's headline capability. Anyone who has actually run a dedicated competitive intelligence tool alongside a broader analytics platform would have a clearer read on whether that split is worth the extra cost and tool count, or whether the bolted-on feature ends up being good enough.
