HR Software Discussions
Hey G2 users, I run a small team and somehow payroll is the one thing I don’t want to get wrong, but also don’t want to spend hours on every month. So I’ve been trying to figure out the best payroll software for small businesses that just works without constant checking.
I’ve been browsing a few options in payroll tools, and these kept coming up in conversations and reviews:
- Gusto seems like what a lot of small teams start with because it’s simple and predictable
- RUN Powered by ADP feels like the “safe choice” when you just want reliability
- Justworks looks like it takes more responsibility off your plate, especially compliance
- Keka mixes payroll with HR, which might reduce juggling tools
- HROne seems more structured if you want everything in one system
I’m not trying to optimize payroll. I just want it to run and not think about it again. What actually made payroll feel “set and forget” for you?
How did you handle things like reimbursements or one-off payments, did your tool make that easy or still a bit manual?
Hey, so I’ve been trying to figure out the best app for handling payroll effortlessly because right now it feels like one of those things that should be simple but somehow takes more time every month than expected.
Nothing too complex on our end. Small team, fairly straightforward salaries. But between making sure everything is accurate, handling deductions, and just not wanting to mess anything up, it still ends up being something I double-check way more than I’d like.
So I started looking into tools in the payroll space to see what people are actually using day to day.
A few that kept coming up:
- Gusto seems like what a lot of small teams start with because it’s straightforward and doesn’t feel too heavy
- RUN Powered by ADP feels more established, like something people trust once they don’t want to worry about errors
- Rippling is interesting because it connects payroll with everything else, not sure if that makes things easier or just more setup
- Paylocity looks like a mix of payroll + HR, maybe useful once things grow a bit
- Justworks seems focused on taking things off your plate completely, especially compliance
I’m not really looking for “advanced features”, just something where payroll runs and I don’t feel like I need to check everything twice.
If you’re using any of these:
- Did it actually make payroll feel routine, or is there still a lot of manual checking?
- Anything that looked simple at first but got complicated over time?
Also, at what point did payroll stop feeling like something you had to constantly double-check?
I’m looking into core HR software for a small business team, and I’d love recommendations from people who have worked with these tools directly. I’m trying to narrow down options that feel practical for a lean team without overcomplicating day-to-day HR.
- RUN Powered by ADP (Rating: 4.6/5): A solid pick for smaller teams that want payroll, employee records, tax handling, and onboarding in one place with a user-friendly setup.
- Gusto (Rating: 4.6/5): Often feels built for smaller businesses that want payroll, benefits, and HR basics covered without adding a lot of admin overhead.
- BambooHR (Rating: 4.4/5): Stands out for straightforward onboarding, leave management, and a clean employee portal that keeps routine HR tasks easier to manage.
- Justworks (Rating: 4.6/5): A strong option for small teams that want streamlined HR, payroll, and compliance support without building a complicated stack.
Which one has felt most manageable for a genuinely small team?
BambooHR and RUN Powered by ADP keep showing up as the go-to picks for small teams: clean setup, affordable, and don't require a dedicated HR person to manage. If you're comparing options, this deep-dive on core HR software is a solid starting point: https://learn.g2.com/best-core-hr-software
