Electronic data interchange (EDI) software solutions enable organizations to exchange standardized business documents electronically with trading partners. These documents include purchase orders, order acknowledgments, advance shipping notices, invoices, inventory updates, and other industry-specific transactions.
EDI solutions support the translation, validation, secure transmission, and tracking of business documents according to recognized standards and applicable trading-partner requirements. They help organizations reduce manual processing, improve data accuracy, and support trading-partner compliance. EDI software differs from managed file transfer (MFT), data transformation, and application integration tools by supporting structured B2B document exchange using recognized trading partner requirements. In addition, moving or routing files, connecting applications, or transforming formats such as CSV, XML, and JSON alone cannot constitute EDI. EDI solutions provide mapping, translation, validation, and automated processing of EDI transactions.
EDI Solutions may be delivered as:
- Full-service, provider-managed offerings
- Self-service software operated by customers
- Platforms that combine EDI with broader business-system integration capabilities
Some products support more than one delivery model or capability set.
Full-service EDI—provider-managed: Solutions in which the provider performs and maintains the technical EDI work within the contracted scope. Services include trading-partner onboarding, mapping, testing and certification where required, connectivity configuration, transaction monitoring, technical exception resolution, and ongoing maintenance of applicable trading-partner requirements. Customers may access a web-based portal or other user interface to view, create, and manage business documents, monitor transaction status, and address business exceptions, while the provider manages the underlying EDI technology and technical processes.
Self-service EDI—customer-managed: Solutions that provide the software and tools needed for customers to configure, operate, and maintain their EDI workflows. The customer primarily manages trading-partner setup, mappings, testing, monitoring, exception handling, and ongoing changes. Vendor support, templates, and optional implementation assistance may be available, but ongoing technical EDI management remains primarily the customer’s responsibility.
EDI and business-system integration platforms: Solutions that combine qualifying EDI functionality with integration capabilities connecting trading-partner transactions to ERP, accounting, warehouse management, ecommerce, logistics, or other business applications. These platforms support coordinated data exchange and workflows across EDI and connected business systems.
Depending on the solution and delivery model, additional capabilities may include trading partner onboarding, document mapping and translation, transaction monitoring, exception handling, compliance management, partner-specific validation, network connectivity, and management of communication protocols.
To qualify for inclusion in the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) category, a product must:
- Process business documents using standards such as ANSI X12, UN/EDIFACT, or other established industry-specific EDI standards
- Translate business data into standardized outbound EDI documents and interpret inbound EDI documents for use in business applications, customer-facing interfaces, or connected systems
- Support validation against applicable EDI standards and trading-partner specifications, with identification of document errors or missing required information
- Establish and maintain partner-specific identifiers, document requirements, mappings, and routing
- Send and receive EDI documents through one or many supported connectivity methods, such as value-added networks (VAN), AS2, SFTP, or secure APIs.
- Provide appropriate security controls, including encryption in transit and at rest, authentication, and access restrictions for authorized users and systems.
- Automate document-processing workflows and provide applicable acknowledgment handling, transaction status, error identification, and processing history
