Learn about its benefits. by Sagar Joshi ## Civil Engineering Design Software Discussions 0 Question on: ActCAD BIM ["Not opened for read" error](/discussions/34302-not-opened-for-read-error) I just downloaded and installed the program. I am using the trial license. I opened a .dwg file that I created in AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 (basically an AutoCAD 2011 file). When I attempt to do anything I get errors. Trying to use the offset command (typed or from the icon) I get "Not opened for read" and I am returned to a blank Command: line. I get the same error when I click the polyline icon to draw a polyline. Lots of other commands produce this same error. Then I try the copy command (from the icon) and select objects to be copied, but when I click the right mouse button to finish the selection I get "Invalid input." Interestingly, I can use the multiline command. I'm wondering if the trial is actually that limited? It's pretty difficult to the program if I can't draw or edit much of anything. Update: It is not a "trial" problem. I am able to use all commands when I create a new drawing (and I imagine when I open the drawing that was created in ActCAD). It is only when opening an existing drawing created in the AutoCAD 2011 environment that I cannot use commands. The objects are there, I just can use almost no commands. I have tried using Wine to run ActCAD on LINUX Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to work (would appreciate any help with this).](/discussions/24491-i-am-trying-to-convert-over-to-linux-from-windows-and-wonder-if-a-linux-version-will-be-available-i-have-tried-using-wine-to-run-actcad-on-linux-ubuntu-but-it-doesn-t-seem-to-work-would-appreciate-any-help-with-this) If ActCAD could be able to be installed to run in LINUX via the Wine Emmulator, that would be a great help. If your system is robust enough, you could run VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org/ and then run a windows virtual system to use ActCAD. I've run my older version of AutoCAD (Map v.2011) that way because it won't run on my Windows 10. You would have to find a license for Windows 7, 8, or 10 as a guest in VirtualBox. I bought ActCAD because I have problems with with AutoCAD because of the .pdf export. It doesn't work for what I need to do plus the VirtualBox can be a little slow mouse-wise, and, with AutoCAD being a fairly memory intensive program, it crashes more often than I'd like. ActCAD is much newer and probably would have no problem in a Windows guest system using Virtualbox.
