Azure Bastion

16 reviews

Azure Bastion is a fully managed Platform as a Service (PaaS) that provides secure and seamless Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and Secure Shell (SSH) access to virtual machines (VMs) without exposing them to public IP addresses. By deploying Azure Bastion within your virtual network, you can connect to your VMs directly through the Azure portal or via native RDP/SSH clients, enhancing security and simplifying remote access management. Key Features and Functionality: - Agentless Access: Connect to your VMs without the need for additional agents or client software, facilitating a streamlined and efficient access process. - Integrated Platform: Azure Bastion eliminates the need for manually deploying and managing jump servers, offering a fully integrated solution that simplifies deployment and management. - Scalability: With Azure Bastion Standard and Premium SKUs, manage additional concurrent RDP and SSH connections to accommodate growing organizational needs. - Session Recording: Azure Bastion Premium provides graphical session recording capabilities, allowing for monitoring and auditing of VM sessions to enhance security and compliance. - Private-Only Deployment: The Premium SKU supports private-only deployment, enabling connections to Azure Bastion via a private endpoint, further securing access to your VMs. Primary Value and Problem Solved: Azure Bastion addresses the critical need for secure remote access to VMs by eliminating the exposure of RDP and SSH ports to the public internet. This approach significantly reduces the risk of cyber threats such as port scanning and brute-force attacks. By providing a managed, scalable, and agentless solution, Azure Bastion simplifies the process of connecting to VMs, enhances security posture, and ensures compliance with organizational policies, all while reducing the operational overhead associated with managing jump servers or bastion hosts.

Unified Multi-Cloud Security Posture Management in One Pane of Glass

What stands out most about Microsoft Defender for Cloud is its unified, multi-cloud approach to cloud security posture management (CSPM) and workload protection across Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud Platform—all from a single pane of glass. It continuously scans cloud infrastructure for misconfigurations and checks it against industry compliance standards, then produces a real-time, actionable Secure Score along with prioritized, contextual alerts backed by rich threat intelligence. With agentless scanning and deep native integration across cloud services, it becomes easier to spot vulnerabilities early, prevent security drift, and secure hybrid environments without adding operational friction for security and DevOps teams.

Attack Path Analysis That Makes Cloud Risk Actionable

It’s not just a scanner—it’s a control plane that connects posture findings to real remediation, and it’s become genuinely strong at doing that. A few things that stand out for me: Attack path analysis. This is the feature that changed how I run client conversations. Instead of handing someone a spreadsheet with 400 “high severity” findings, I can show an actual graph: “this exposed VM connects to this database with this over-permissioned identity, and here’s the three-hop path an attacker would take.” It turns abstract risk into a story leadership can actually follow, and it pushes prioritization instead of the usual whack-a-mole. Unifying CSPM and CWPP in one place. Before this was consolidated, I was stitching together posture data from one tool and runtime threat detection from another for every client. Now I can see recommendations and active threat alerts in the same console, often tied to the same resource. That correlation—“this resource is misconfigured and is also showing suspicious activity right now”—is where the real value shows up. Multi-cloud without needing a separate product. Being able to onboard an AWS account and evaluate it against the same posture framework as an Azure subscription, all in the same portal, still feels like a genuine win. A lot of clients end up with hybrid environments almost by accident (for example, shadow IT AWS accounts spun up by a dev team), and having one pane of glass to catch that is worth a lot. Native reporting. I’ve mentioned this earlier, but it deserves its own callout: being able to build a CNAPP Executive Summary report inside the product and export it for a board deck—rather than exporting raw data into Power BI every quarter—has saved me hours per client. If I had to pick just one highlight, though, it’s the attack path graph. It’s what turns “here’s a wall of alerts” into “here’s what actually matters and why,” and that’s basically the whole job of a security consultant.
