  ### 41. Distributed coordination with Zookeeper

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Supun N. | Analyst/Programmer, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 19, 2018

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

Zookeeper is a single software component which can provide solutions for all the distributed coordination requirements ranging from leader election, service discovery, and distributed cache.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

Although Zookeeper can be used to solve almost all the distributed coordination requirements, it's APIs are very primitive and hence often requires more code to be written for getting a task done even for the standard tasks. But this can be overcome by using Zookeeper with Apache curator.

**Recommendations to others considering ZooKeeper:**

Don't use Zookeeper APIs directly, but use it with Curator. This will make your life much easier.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used Apache Zookeeper for handling the distributed coordination requirements in several distributed systems that I have developed. We choose Zookeeper because it is a mature opensource product which is wide used in industry.

  ### 42. Best Free Key Store Service for Distributed Systems

Zookeeper is open source, tried and tested for many many years, so it has a lot of documentation, and has a very large amount of room for scaling.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

There is a bit of a learning curve to zookeeper, as managing znodes isn't the easiest thing to start with. We created a visual GUI to manage nodes at one point with Electron.

**Recommendations to others considering ZooKeeper:**

While there is somewhat of a learning curve, the value gained from using it is uncanny.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Zookeeper allows us to keep metadata distributed across systems so that we don't have a single point of failure.

  ### 43. Reliable cluster co-ordinaton service

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

Zookeeper provide us high performance coordination service for distributed applications. Zookeeper nodes store their data in hierarchical name space, like tree data structure. Various benefits of zookeeper are Ordered messages, simple distribution coordination process, synchorization, reliability

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

If we want to do service discovery, other solutions like consul have it baked in, with health check in loops.limited support for cross cluster scenarios . Zookeeper may however help with scalability and perhaps cross data center

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It holds multiple program together. It helps distributed systems to reduce thier management complexity

  ### 44. ZooKeeper Review

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

We have offices in San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Mountain View so it is a great tool to keep organized with our team members that sit down at one of the other locations.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

I can't say I use it a lot, but I do find that it does not sync very fast. A lot of refreshing

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it for sharing client profiles & team meeting information, 2 week challenges. Better than documents getting lost in email

  ### 45. Hard to administer

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

It’s easy to get going and integrates well with the Apache stack

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

It’s hard to administer and make production ready.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Use it as a KV backend for Kafka

  ### 46. A good apache service for high availability

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

It is open source. We use it for solr index server and it easily maintains the distributed server which share the data. Once its installed there is not much issues. It works like a beauty.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

it is not easy to start using. There is a learning curve. sometime the error is not very easily understandable.

**Recommendations to others considering ZooKeeper:**

dont get bogged down by the set up time.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have solr index which keeps indexing we are using zookeeper for that

  ### 47. Zookeeper to manage Storm

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

It is customizable, and once you get it up and running it really doesn't need supervision. Once we overcame the permissions issues with getting zookeeper to manage our nodes in a lab environment where we did not have root access, we did not have to touch zookeeper for the duration of our research project. It took care of our storm cluster, balancing workloads and restarting nodes who died without issue.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

It is difficult to use in an individual user environment. It requires a lot of integration done by someone with root permissions to get zookeeper to run in a lab clustered environment.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were using it as a cluster manager to manage Storm nodes for an undergraduate research project.

  ### 48. Good tool to manage applications

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

Reliable updates of configuration in cluster. Monitoring of nodes status.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

It is not really light weight. You will need to maintain a pretty big stack.

**Recommendations to others considering ZooKeeper:**

You can use it if you need reliable communication between nodes. Though if you need more complex message structure you can look at solutions like RabbitMQ and Redis.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used Zookeeper along with Kafka, so Kafka requires it. But you can use it to coming between your nodes. As a heartbeat checker for example.

  ### 49. Manage large set of data with Zookeper

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about ZooKeeper?**

ZooKeeper provides an infrastructure for cross-node synchronization and can be used by applications to ensure that tasks across the cluster are serialized or synchronized.

**What do you dislike about ZooKeeper?**

1.Adding New ZooKeeper Servers Can Lead to Data Loss
2.The ZooKeeper server cannot be migrated from version 3.4 to 3.3, then back to 3.4, without user intervention.

**What problems is ZooKeeper solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Architecting a distributed system is not a trivial problem; it is very prone to race conditions, deadlocks, and inconsistency. Making cluster coordination fast and scalable is just as hard as making it reliable. That’s where Apache ZooKeeper, a coordination service that gives you the tools you need to write correct distributed applications, comes in handy.
