Cascade is genuinely the best part of Windsurf for me. It doesn’t just autocomplete a line; it actually understands the whole codebase, can plan a multi-file change, and then execute it, including running terminal commands when needed. That saves me a huge amount of time on repetitive setup work I used to handle by hand.

The interface feels clean and familiar since it’s built on a VS Code foundation, so I didn’t lose productivity when switching over. My existing extensions and shortcuts mostly just worked. I also like that it connects easily with tools like GitHub, so I’m not constantly jumping between windows just to check something.

Performance has held up well for me even on fairly large projects. Tasks run smoothly without much lag, and on bigger tasks the AI stays context-aware across the session. That means I don’t have to keep re-explaining what I’m working on every time I open a new chat.

I’ve used a fair number of AI coding tools at this point, Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code—and Windsurf is the one I keep defaulting to when a task involves real multi-file complexity across multiple languages. The reason is almost entirely Cascade, and it’s worth being specific about why.

At the core of Windsurf is Cascade: an agentic AI system designed to understand entire codebases and guide developers through multi-file edits. Instead of bouncing between ChatGPT, Stack Overflow, and your editor, you get an IDE that understands your project, suggests changes, fixes errors, and generates multi-file edits with real context awareness. That last part is what separates it from tools where you’re constantly re-explaining what your project looks like before getting anything useful back.

Windsurf’s Fast Context technology indexes your entire codebase and builds an understanding of your project structure, dependencies, and patterns. When you ask Cascade to make a change, it already knows which files are relevant, you don’t have to manually tag files or keep pasting in context the way you often do in competing tools. For someone working across multiple languages and project types, not having to rebuild context from scratch every session is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement that compounds over time.

The Memories feature takes this further. Over about 48 hours of use, Windsurf starts to pick up your architecture patterns, coding conventions, and project structure, and the suggestions become noticeably more accurate. That learning behavior is something you feel rather than measure, but it’s real: the longer I’ve used it on a project, the less I’m correcting outputs and the more I’m simply reviewing and merging.

Cascade also handles multi-file edits better than any tool I’ve tested at this price point. Need to add a new API endpoint, update the route, create a component, and modify the database schema? I can describe the feature, and Cascade will plan and execute changes across all the relevant files. That end-to-end feature execution across the full stack, without me shepherding each step, is the workflow shift that actually changes how I plan and scope work.

The core feature set, Cascade for deep, codebase-aware AI work; Tab for context-aware autocomplete; live previews for website editing inside the IDE; MCP support; terminal commands in natural language; and inline refactoring tools, covers what I need without forcing me to leave the editor for most tasks. The terminal integration, in particular, is more useful than it sounds: being able to describe what I want to run rather than constructing the command manually helps me stay in flow during complex deployment or testing sequences.

The speed and automation Cascade brings is genuinely impressive. It feels like an experienced developer working alongside you, creating files, executing commands, and reflecting on its own code to improve it. Most of the time, I just describe a feature and Cascade takes over and gets it done.

At $15 per month for Pro versus Cursor’s $20 with deeper context awareness through Cascade, the value equation is strong for a solo developer, where every tool cost is weighed against direct output.

The mostly positive experience comes with reliability caveats that are honest enough to flag clearly.

Windsurf's cons are reliability gaps, slower cold start, and a credit system that can surprise heavy users. The credit system is the one that catches you off guard most predictably — you're in flow on a complex multi-file refactor, Cascade is doing excellent work, and then you hit a credit wall mid-task. The interruption is jarring in a way that feels disproportionate for a paid tool, and the transparency around how quickly different operations consume credits could be significantly better. 

The March 2026 pricing overhaul cut quotas and drew significant backlash. That repricing decision left a sour taste for developers who had built their workflows around a particular usage expectation — and the communication around it was not handled in a way that built confidence in the commercial stability of the product going forward. 

The trial offered only 100 credits for the free tier, and once consumed, access to paid models was blocked until the trial ended — which for a tool where the value proposition is only apparent after meaningful extended use is a friction point that undersells what Windsurf is actually capable of. 

Billing support, when things go wrong, is mostly bots — which for a paid developer tool handling unexpected charges or credit disputes is an experience that needs to be better than it currently is. 

The acquisition context is also worth acknowledging honestly. The Windsurf and Cascade brand names are being retired, the founding team left for Google, and the roadmap is now driven by Cognition's agent-fleet vision rather than the original solo-developer IDE focus. That strategic shift raises legitimate questions about whether the product's future development will continue to serve the individual developer use case as well as it does today — or whether enterprise and autonomous agent fleet use cases will absorb the product roadmap going forward.

Windsurf attempts to redefine coding workflows — and in several areas it succeeds. It behaves like a semi-autonomous teammate capable of restructuring entire modules, consolidating utilities, or performing repository-wide refactors with minimal input. 

For a developer working across multiple languages and project types the core problem it solves is context — the overhead of keeping the AI assistant oriented to the current state of a complex, evolving codebase. Windsurf's Fast Context and Memories capabilities address that problem more effectively than any competing tool I've used, which means the cognitive overhead of working with AI assistance is lower and the outputs are more accurate without requiring constant correction.

It reduces the amount of manual coding and debugging effort required, helping build end-to-end projects faster compared to using a normal IDE alone. In practice, tasks that used to require me to break them down into individual steps I'd prompt separately — add the route, update the schema, create the component, wire up the handler — now get described once at the feature level and executed coherently across the codebase. That's a genuine workflow shift, not a marginal speed improvement. 

Six months in, Windsurf is the AI IDE I default to when I need a code editor that drives multi-file changes through to completion without making me babysit each step. That autonomy — the ability to hand off a well-described task and trust it to execute across files and terminals without constant steering — is the thing that makes it distinctly valuable rather than just marginally better than alternatives. 

Bottom line: Windsurf is the most capable AI IDE I've used for multi-file, multi-language development work — and Cascade is genuinely ahead of competing tools at this price point for the tasks that matter most. The credit system friction, reliability gaps, and acquisition uncertainty are real concerns worth monitoring. But for developers who can tolerate occasional rough edges in exchange for an AI coding partner that actually understands and drives complex codebases, it earns its place in the stack convincingly.

Cascade is the center of gravity here, and it is the feature that moved Windsurf from something I was evaluating to something I open every morning. It is not autocomplete with a chat window bolted on. I describe a feature, adding an authenticated endpoint to an Express service for example, and Cascade plans the change across the route file, the middleware, the model, and the environment config, then walks through the edits in steps I can review before anything lands. That pacing is the part I did not expect to care about. Other agents I have used sprint through a refactor and leave me to discover the damage afterward. Cascade pauses at sensible points, shows me the diff, and waits. On a codebase I am responsible for, that difference decides whether I let the agent touch anything beyond a single file.
 
The codebase awareness underneath it is what makes those multi-file edits actually correct. Cascade reads the repository, follows import chains, and knows that renaming a function in one service means three call sites elsewhere need to move too. I tested this early on with a deliberately messy refactor in a client project, splitting a bloated utility module into three focused ones, and it caught every consumer, including one in a test file I had forgotten existed. It misses things occasionally on very large repos, but the hit rate is high enough that I stopped doing the manual grep pass first.
 
Memories deserves its own paragraph because it is the feature that compounds. Tell Cascade once that a project uses the repository pattern with dependency injection, or that API responses follow a specific envelope shape, and it remembers across sessions. After a couple of days on a project the suggestions stop fighting my conventions and start extending them. I used to keep a conventions document open in a side pane purely so I could paste chunks of it into every AI conversation. That document still exists, but I have not opened it in weeks.
 
Tab autocomplete is the quiet workhorse. It is fast, it is context aware, and it does not consume quota, so I never hesitate to lean on it for the routine typing between the bigger agentic tasks. Nothing dramatic to report, it simply works, which is exactly what inline completion should do.
 
Model flexibility matters more in practice than I assumed it would. Inside one editor I switch between the frontier models and Windsurf's own SWE line depending on the task:
 
- A frontier model for gnarly architectural questions or unfamiliar territory
- The in-house SWE model for routine implementation work, where its speed is genuinely startling and the quota cost is minimal or zero
- A cheaper option for boilerplate and test scaffolding where reasoning depth is wasted
 
Being able to route work by difficulty rather than paying frontier prices for everything changed how far my monthly allowance stretches. It also means I evaluate new models the day they appear in the picker instead of juggling separate subscriptions.
 
Previews closed a context switch I had stopped noticing. Editing a web frontend used to mean editor, browser, dev tools, back to editor, on a loop. With the live preview inside the IDE I click an element on the rendered page and Cascade knows which component I mean, so "make this card's padding match the others" is a one-line instruction rather than a hunt through the component tree. For frontend polish work it has become my default way of communicating with the agent.
 
The natural language terminal and MCP support round out the toolset. Asking for "the git command that undoes the last commit but keeps the changes staged" and getting the right incantation without a search tab is a small daily saving that adds up. MCP lets Cascade reach outside the editor, pulling from a database or a docs source mid-task, which turns some formerly manual research steps into part of the agent's own workflow.
 
The free tier is worth a flat, unexcited mention: it is usable. Unlimited autocomplete and enough agent access to run real tasks means I could evaluate the tool on actual client work for two weeks before paying anything, and when I recommend it to someone I can tell them to try it properly rather than against a crippled demo. Not a feature exactly, but it shaped my decision.
 
Shared workflows and rules turned out to matter once more than one person was involved. We keep a handful of team-editable instruction sets in the repo, things like our migration checklist and our conventions for error handling, and Cascade follows them the way it follows Memories. New contributors get the team's operating knowledge applied to their AI output from day one instead of learning it through review comments. It is the closest thing I have seen to making tribal knowledge executable.
 
One more structural point in its favor: Windsurf is not locked to its own editor. The plugin coverage across the JetBrains suite and other environments means the same account and the same AI layer follow me when a project demands PyCharm instead of the standalone IDE. Colleagues who refuse to leave IntelliJ get most of the value without switching editors, which made team adoption a far easier conversation.

**What do you dislike about WindSurf AI IDE?**

The pricing model has been the least stable part of the product, and I say that as someone who thinks the current value is fine. Since I started using it the billing structure has been reworked, credits gave way to daily and weekly usage quotas, and the Pro tier price moved upward in the process. Each individual change was defensible, but the cumulative effect is that I have had to relearn how my usage maps to cost more than once, and the quota limits are less transparent than a plain credit counter was. My workaround is routing everything routine through the in-house SWE model, which barely touches the quota, and saving the frontier models for work that earns them. That discipline keeps me comfortably inside the limits, but a new user running every prompt through the most expensive model will hit the ceiling faster than they expect, and the product does not do enough to warn them.
 
Long Cascade sessions degrade. Somewhere past the twenty-five or thirty message mark on a complex task, the agent starts losing track of what it already changed, occasionally re-suggesting an edit it made an hour earlier. The fix I have settled into is treating conversations as disposable: keep each session scoped to one task, let Memories carry the durable context forward, and start fresh when the thread gets long. Once I adopted that habit the problem mostly vanished, but I had to discover the habit myself, because nothing in the product nudges you toward it.
 
Cold start is slower than it should be. The editor takes noticeably longer to launch than a plain VS Code install, and the first Cascade invocation of a session adds a few seconds of warmup. Once everything is warm it feels fine for the rest of the day, so this is a morning annoyance rather than a working one, but on a machine that reboots often it registers.
 
Documentation lags the product. Features ship at a genuinely fast pace, which I appreciate, but more than once I have found a new capability through a changelog note or a community post before any official docs existed for it. Extension parity with stock VS Code is close but not complete. The assistant knew things but could not touch things. Cascade collapses that loop. The agent reads the actual repository, makes the actual edits, and I review diffs instead of transcribing suggestions. Feature work that spans four files is now one instruction and one review pass rather than four rounds of paste and reconcile.
 
Re-explaining my own conventions was a tax I paid on every single AI conversation, and Memories removed it. The before-state was pasting the same architectural notes into every new chat and still watching the model drop business logic into a controller because it had forgotten the pattern by message ten. Now the conventions persist. The agent I talk to on Thursday remembers what I established on Monday, and the quality of its output on a mature project reflects that accumulated context in a way a stateless chat never could.
 
Unfamiliar codebases stopped being a multi-day archaeology project. When I inherit a client repository, my first hour is now spent asking Cascade how things work, where the auth flow lives, why there are two competing date utilities, what actually calls this deprecated module. The codebase-aware answers are grounded in the real files rather than plausible guesses, and I reach the point of making confident changes in a fraction of the time the manual read-through used to take. For consulting work where ramp-up time is unbilled overhead, this is the benefit I would defend hardest.
 
Deferred maintenance work actually gets done now. Tasks like writing integration tests for a dozen endpoints or updating a batch of deprecated API calls used to sit in the backlog because they were tedious rather than hard. Handing that category of work to the agent, and in longer cases to a background session I check on later, means I come back to a draft that needs review and cleanup instead of a blank file. The work was always possible. What changed is that it stopped competing with more interesting work for my attention, so it stops rotting in the backlog.
 
Frontend iteration lost its context-switching cost. The old cycle of edit, save, switch to browser, inspect, switch back was invisible to me until Previews removed it. Pointing at a rendered element and describing the change in plain language keeps me in one window for the entire polish pass on a page, and the feedback loop tightening changes how many iterations I am willing to do. Pages ship in better shape because refining them got cheaper.
 
Feasibility questions got answerable in an afternoon. Before, when a client asked whether their product could integrate with some third-party service, an honest answer required half a day of building a throwaway spike, so those questions either waited for a gap in the schedule or got answered with a guess. Now I open a scratch project, hand Cascade the API docs through a fetch or an MCP source, and have a working proof of concept in an hour or two. The spike still gets thrown away, that has not changed. What changed is that the cost of finding out dropped low enough that I actually find out, and the estimates I put in proposals rest on something I have run rather than something I have read.
 
Model sprawl was a quieter problem it solved. I was maintaining separate subscriptions and separate workflows to keep access to more than one frontier model, plus the mental overhead of deciding where each task should go. Consolidating that into one editor with a model picker means the routing decision takes a second, the billing is one line item, and trying a newly released model requires no setup at all. The strategic benefit is staying current with the model landscape as a side effect of normal work rather than as a research project I have to schedule.

It's AI based auto-suggestions, which is very slow. it takes so much time to recommend inline suggestions. If the trial/free version does not work properly, one cannot think that it will work fine in paid version. So, purchasing a pro plan feels risky.
