Only VueScan allowed me to keep using old scanner, saving me hundreds of dollars **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Bill S. | El Jefe, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** September 06, 2024 **What do you like best about VueScan?** VueScan is pretty decent scanning software, but the real treasure for me is that they have unmatched support for older hardware. **What do you dislike about VueScan?** The interface feels like old Windows, but that's hardly a deal breaker. I don't really mind this, but some might criticize it. **What problems is VueScan solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have old but good-quality scanners. One, a MicroTek i800 flatbed transparency scanner, would not work at all with any of my current Mac equipment. Neither Apple nor MicroTek offer any support for this scanner with my system. The scanner itself is only ten years old, hardly ancient for an expensive piece of office equipment and I imagine many other scanners and printers fall into this trap of big corporations discarding customer support once it's no longer lucrative for them. After searching for solutions, trying several suggestions, and also trying several third-party software solutions, the only fix that came through was VueScan. And it's primarily because VueScan is from a small software developer who takes the utility and longevity of their product seriously. It's worth it to me to pay for the pro version and get my scanners back and also to support independent software developers. ### 2. Spent a month trying to troubleshoot errors. Ed was cordial just at first but then got hung up on accusing us of running multiple instances (We showed him several times that it wasn't, including making screen recordings of the whole process). Then after a month of trying to get him to work with us he decided he wouldn't refund because it was a month from the purchase. The program never worked. We gave him ample opportunity to investigate the issue or refund us but sadly Amex agreed and compelled Hamrick Software to refund in total. **What problems is VueScan solving and how is that benefiting you?** When it works I was able to digitize documents quickly and file them away. ### 3. VueScan works perfectly with the scanner and seems to understand and support everything the scanner is able to do. I ran into a problem with bulk scanning of color negatives and the author provided personal, prompt support and resolved my issue. (It was me, not the software at fault.) I'm VERY happy with it. **What do you dislike about VueScan?** I wish brightness and contrast controls were a bit more intuitive, but I'm getting used to them. **What problems is VueScan solving and how is that benefiting you?** Original manufacturer software can't install in the current Windows OS. It automatically discovers your equipment and starts walking you through the process. It is particularly good with older flatbeds that you may otherwise consider replacing. **What do you dislike about VueScan?** It's not great with newer equipment, and you're honestly better off using free options in most cases if you're working with a brand new scanner. **What problems is VueScan solving and how is that benefiting you?** If you're looking to set up a system that is comprised of older equipment, this would be a great addition to your scanning software. If you're designing a system with new or next-to-new equipment then this is probably not the way to go. ### 7. Simple Reliable Scanning For Multiple Devices with VueScan **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Animation | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** November 03, 2020 **What do you like best about VueScan?** Vuescan provides a fast, simple, and stable platform for image scanning using a variety of devices, including specialized slide and film scanners. The program is inexpensive, and is one of the few I've encountered whose "lifetime" license is really that (at least so far-). You can update to the latest version at any time, or not. It works with local and network attached scanner resources as well, without any extra steps or unwanted complexity. As far as I am aware this a Windows only platform. **What do you dislike about VueScan?** It's difficult for me to find anything negative to say about this program. It's inexpensive, reliable and easy to use. If anything, the file type support is a bit limited, but with TIFF, JPG, and PDF as options you can find something to fit into your workflow and convert to other formats if needed. **What problems is VueScan solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our initial purchase of the software was to deliver a connection to a Nikon Coolscan Slide and Film scanner which was long since discontinued by the manufacturer. VueScan provided a fast and easy interface and support for scanning full resolution from slides and negatives on the scanner. Once installed, however, it also allowed for use on other network and direct connections scanners defined on the computer. The same performance was seamless when we migrated to Windows 10 last year. ### 8. You can choose several modes such as standard or professional to narrow/expand the features depending what you are scanning. **What do you dislike about VueScan?** My biggest gripe with VueScan is the preview does NOT look like the final scan. So I cannot adjust colors and the white/black point with any accuracy which is extremely annoying. What looks like a perfect scan in the preview, comes out either underexposed or overexposed or the color and contrast is wrong. **Recommendations to others considering VueScan:** Consider other scanning software. Everything about VueScan is great except the preview/output problems I've mentioned. **What problems is VueScan solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can scan quickly, but I am still looking for a better software with the same amount of features that allows me to fine tune the preview and get exactly that in the output. ### 11. Dont have to look for a scanner nearby 2.
