"Vectorworks Architect is the designer's BIM"
5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

Vectorworks brings together robust free-form 3D modeling, BIM modeling, 2D drafting, and excellent rendering (with Renderworks) in a single application. Having these core parts of architectural software integrated in one place supports the inherently iterative nature of the design process, since I don’t have to export a 3D model into a separate BIM workflow and then draft documentation elsewhere. When the inevitable design changes and refinements happen later on, it’s straightforward to explore free-form 3D options, render them, fold the results back into the BIM model, and keep any supporting 2D documentation up to date.

My model files are comprehensive and Vectorworks handles them. Teams can use shared server files or cross reference individual files. When working with outside consultants, Vectorworks can import and export a wide variety of BIM, CAD, and 3D formats. I routinely import and export DWGs, grab component or equipment models from manufacturers and crowd-sourced communities, import textures, even import Revit families and files for reference.

Moreover, I don't feel like I'm locked into a corporate ecosystem. Annual subscription rates are reasonable, I can "park" a license if I don't need it, and I can open my archived files from up to 12 versions ago and backsave up to 6 versions back if I'm collaborating with someone who doesn't have the latest license.

The AI visualizer is evolving fast, as you'd expect. It integrates within Vectorworks, so I can produce seamless tiling textures, change paint colors on a photo, even clean up text on an imported JPEG—it's not just for rendering Vectorworks viewports.

If you want to see an example of integrating Camera Match—a photo-matching Vectorworks tool—with AI Visualization, check out a recent Vectorworks community meeting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKwRo3UQg9Q. And speaking of communities, the message boards are full of helpful and dedicated fellow users who love the software and are eager to share. You can learn from architects, landscapers, scenic designers, and event creators from all over the world. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

I don’t really have any specific dislikes about Vectorworks. Like any sophisticated software, though, you do need to invest the time to learn it thoroughly. Because Vectorworks is so broad, there’s a lot of ground to cover and plenty of tools to get familiar with. Once you have those tools in place, you can become phenomenally productive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

Thank you for the detailed review. We’re glad Vectorworks Architect and Renderworks give you an integrated, flexible workflow for exploring design options, coordinating models, and producing documentation, visuals, and analysis efficiently—all in one place.

We also appreciate your recommendation to invest in training. It’s great to hear that the breadth of tools translates into powerful productivity once users become familiar with the workflow.

"Intuitive, Feature-Rich Solution for Architects"
5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

I like that Vectorworks Architect seems to know how architects think, with graphic representation in two and three dimensions in a way we prefer. It's very easy to use and intuitive to learn, even as more tools are developed. It allows me to build a strong and robust model embedded with a lot of information. Additionally, it helps streamline design issues and decision-making by bringing projects to life for my clients, which truly enhances my work. Vectorworks Architect has always been cost-effective, which is a big plus for my projects compared to its competitors. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

As they develop new features, they need to get architects' input to perfect tools like the stair and other architectural features that are part of all buildings. They should also focus on making the software take less memory, run smoother, and have fewer bugs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

Thank you for such a thoughtful review. It’s especially meaningful to hear that Architect aligns with how you think and communicate as an architect—helping you build information-rich models, develop construction documents, and bring design decisions to life clearly for clients.

We also appreciate your candid feedback on stairs, other core architectural tools, performance, and stability. We encourage you to visit the Vectorworks Public Roadmap, where you can explore planned development, share feedback, and vote on the features that would make the biggest difference in your workflow.

"Intuitive Design Tool with Powerful Customization"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

I love that Vectorworks Architect is easy to use and customize, allowing me to design in an intuitive way, yet it also has the power to manage complex construction delivery workflows. The site and solar analysis, early block modeling with spaces, and interactive data sheets are standout features for me. Plus, the use of AI for site concepts adds a whole new level to my design process. It's a complete design solution that lets me design, analyze, and make client presentations effectively with quick design iterations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

I find the interoperability with Revit lacking. It would be great if there were more seamless ways to translate and share files back and forth with Revit users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Feature-Rich, Stable, and Great Value for BIM, Building Design, Stage, and Rendering"
5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

The value of the wide range of features is the most important thing to me. As an architect, I design a broad mix of projects, from conventional construction to stage design and rendering. Being able to switch from one discipline to another without worrying about adding another package is a major benefit.

Stability is also extremely important, and I’ve never lost any data during a design session. The support I’ve received has been excellent as well, with strong follow-up to correct issues and answer questions. Overall, the pricing feels very competitive for what is received—BIM, design features, and rendering—which reduces my risk in owning such a complete package.

AI has been a great help in learning how to use this product. It will continue to improve as it is always getting better! I use Vectorworks with Grok Bot Agents and API's to reduce the busy work of an Architect to focus on providing complete design solutions for my client. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

The only downside of VA is the learning curve, although it gets easier with everyday use. A big part of that curve is learning how to interact with the right snap tool. VA also relies on a procedural model for using commands correctly, so you often need to follow a specific sequence. Because of that, the learning curve can feel steep at first, since you have to memorize the procedure for each command to use it properly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

Thank you for such a thoughtful review. It’s wonderful to hear how Vectorworks Architect supports the full range of your work without requiring separate tools for BIM, rendering, and design. We’re especially glad that its stability, support, and integrated 2D/3D workflow give you confidence to focus on complete design solutions for your clients.

We also appreciate your candid insight into the learning curve, particularly around snapping and command workflows. It’s encouraging to hear that everyday use and AI tools are helping you build confidence, and your feedback provides valuable direction as we continue working to make these foundational interactions more intuitive. For additional support, Vectorworks University (https://university.vectorworks.net/) offers self-paced learning resources on core tools and workflows, including snapping and constraints.

"Intuitive, Powerful, and Cost-Effective CAD for 2D Plans and 3D Visuals"
5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

I’ve used Vectorworks since it was first introduced as MiniCAD, so I’m not sure how unbiased I can be, but I’ll do my best.

Over the years I’ve never taken any of the classes that have been offered, and I’m almost completely self-taught, with the exception of the Vectorworks “help,” which I’ve relied on quite a lot. Overall, I’ve found the application to be nearly as intuitive as using a Mac. The main thing that can feel unintuitive is the reliance on technical terms for actions you want to perform, which can be frustrating—especially when I’m starting a new project under tight deadlines. In those situations, I try not to lean on features or capabilities I haven’t tested yet. Instead, I stick with what I know until I have time to explore the program and learn new ways to present the work or accomplish new tasks.

The accompanying screenshot shows plans for a remodeling project for my own home. Imported images that show the structure in 3D are a huge help for visualizing a project with multiple levels, and I use this same technique with my current clients’ projects all the time. Many clients have trouble translating 2D drawings into a 3D object, so being able to place rendered images on the same page as the plan view is a godsend.

When I first started using the application, I looked at other CAD programs and was blown away by the estimated costs. $25,000 per “seat,” including the hardware and software package, was beyond my means, while MiniCAD plus a small Macintosh setup cost a small fraction of that. Once I started using the program, I quickly worked out how to teach myself the basics and then move into more complicated aspects with comparative ease. Although the cost has increased over the years, it still feels like the most cost-effective application that offers extremely powerful tools for anyone who needs to produce plans or views for a project—not only drawings and walkthroughs for client presentations, but also detailed shop drawings to build from and to get quotes for parts and labor when an outside vendor is required. Being mindful of the special offerings from Vectorworks can help control cost by taking advantage of these when offered.

For tradeshow displays, the ability to integrate graphic files received from clients is essential to show how the finished project will actually look in reality. Perspective views which don't exaggerate height or size of a project is easy and extremely important so the client can see exactly what his booth will look like on the tradeshow floor. Exaggerated views can result in client disappointment and loss of their confidence in my ability to show them an honest representation of their display.

When working on construction projects, the use of layers as originally intended (basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor etc.) is a powerful tool that allows me to work with each level independently while still in alignment and registration with each additional level with ease. But I can also use the layers as separate pages with different drawing scales appropriate for that page, when I produced assembly instructions so a complex structure can be safely installed and easily dismantled as needed. I have produced hundreds of instructions for tradeshow displays, retail store fixtures, and various other structures for permanent as well as temporary use.

One of the best aspects of using Vectorworks is the ease with which I can make updates and changes to proposed projects, or to existing projects that have already been built but need additional or upgrades. Even if it is a project that was designed several years ago, the newer version of Vectorworks that I am using will import the old file quickly for revisions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

The downside of working with Vectorworks is that there are so many different ways to use it, and so many options for the final output, that I could spend all of my time learning more and better ways of doing my job. Unfortunately, I can only take advantage of a small portion of what Vectorworks might be able to do for me and my clients. Regardless, I lean a little more each time I open the application for another project. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

Thank you for sharing such a detailed perspective, especially as a longtime user since the MiniCAD days. It’s great to hear that Vectorworks continues to provide a cost-effective, capable workflow for such a wide range of work.

We understand the challenge of a platform offering many possible workflows and output options. It’s encouraging to hear that you continue to discover more with each project, and we appreciate your long-term trust in Vectorworks.

What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

Vectorworks is very user-friendly and helps me create more beautiful visuals than other drafting programs I’ve worked with. Support is consistently great, and the price warnings feel fair and informative rather than surprising. Overall, it feels like everyone is on the same team with Vectorworks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

Even with brand new, powerful equipment, I sometimes experience crashes. This next portion is kind of a plus and a minus, but there is SO many features that I probably don't use all of them to their maximum advantage as it's overwhelming. I haven't really tried any of the AI features or most of the other integrations. I wish it was more widely used in the industry as well for easier file compatibility etc. File sizes get quite large when maximizing visuals. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. We’re glad Vectorworks feels user-friendly and helps you create beautiful visuals, and it’s great to hear that our support, pricing communication, library updates, and technology integrations contribute to a sense that everyone is working together.

We also appreciate your candid comments about occasional crashes, large file sizes when visuals are maximized, industry-wide file compatibility, and the challenge of navigating such a broad feature set. Your feedback helps us understand where continued improvements can make the experience more stable, efficient, and approachable.

"A great product, but frustratingly unstable"
2.5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

As a design tool VW Architect is really intuitive, however there is a lot of development resources spent on frivolous items leaving behind the key areas when work is still needed - such as fixing long standing problems with a number of the parametric modelling tools for creating a model that actually works as designed, and not looks good from the outside but having to do 'workarounds' to make the solution work in real life. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

There are a number of basic tools which VW fails to fix, it is extremely unstable. Irrespective of what VW states, it does not integrate well with other software platforms and utilising industry standard BIM libraries which are primarily in Revit format is painful at best. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Vu Nguyen of Vectorworks Arch

Thanks for your feedback, Kevin. We are proud of how intuitive Vectorworks Architect is for designers like yourself. We understand navigating BIM collaboration and interoperability can sometimes be challenging and frustrating. However, if you encounter unexpected results when importing and exporting files to various formats, please get in touch with our Tech Support team at tech@vectorworks.net, and we can help resolve any issues you may be facing.

"Terrific Modeling and Built-In Rendering with Excellent Graphic Capabilities"
5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

User since 1995 - The modeling is terrific. The built in rendering is terrific. VW handles all sorts of formats easily. The graphic capabilities are so good that I have never needed to learn Photoshop. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

Revit and ArchiCad don't play well. May sound silly, but a recent change in closing a file is irritating as if you do it wrong (ways that worked fine previously) the app will quit, requiring re-booting. Since I often have several jobs open at once, this can be interrupting. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

It’s wonderful to hear that Vectorworks has been part of your workflow since 1995. We’re glad that its modeling, built-in rendering, file format support, and graphics capabilities continue to make a meaningful difference in your work.

We’re sorry to hear about the disruptive behavior you’ve experienced when closing files. Please contact our Technical Support team at tech@vectorworks.net with details about the issue, your Vectorworks version, and any relevant files so they can investigate further.

We also appreciate your feedback on interoperability with other design platforms. Improving file exchange and coordination across project teams remains an important focus for us.

"Great Team Collaboration, Needs Tweaks"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Vectorworks Architect?

I have really enjoyed using Vectorworks Architect as a new user. I find the combination of a smart program and connected information in the drawings very useful. As a team leader, I particularly appreciate the ability to control team members' access and permissions, which makes team working with different levels of coworkers easier in a shared file. I like that I can share files within a team or a group of coworkers, which helps streamline our workflow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Vectorworks Architect?

Changing the premade schedules like the door schedule isn't very easy or convenient, which can be frustrating. There's also an issue with the section mark where changing its graphic isn't separate from the section sheet's appearance. I think the section mark graphic needs to be separated from the showing boundary to make it more practical to use. Additionally, the initial setup process wasn't very easy, which made getting started a bit challenging. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Elena Pantazopoulos of Vectorworks Arch

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s great to hear that the connected information in your drawings, file sharing, and team access controls is helping you lead projects and collaborate more smoothly across different experience levels.

We also appreciate your detailed feedback on customizing door schedules, section-marker graphics, and the initial setup process. Specific workflow feedback like this is incredibly valuable as we continue developing Architect and improving the experience.
