I used Varsity Tutors for a month on a promo price. I needed to pause my membership and did so on their website, but then still was receiving text reminders for scheduled sessions. I then called to confirm that I was paused. The person I spoke with said I was paused and I had until the 16th to cancel or continue. It is now the 16th and I just got off the phone with them and they'd already charged a renewal fee. If "Until the 16th" doesn't mean "up to and including the 16th" then they should be more explicit about that fact when communicating with customers. From what I've read elsewhere the general trend of Varsity Tutors making their auto-renewal charges not immediately obvious to people seems to be commonplace. **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** They were meant to help solve the issue of easily accessible tutoring that works with my schedule. ### 2. It felt like the main focus of the company was on maximizing profits, rather than genuinely caring about the students they were supposed to help. The guy on the phone PROMISED that the pause would not stop without me calling to talk about it. The tutors are normally quite nice and surprisingly patient. **What do you dislike about Varsity Tutors?** Occasionally you will get a less reliable tutor and it can be stressful getting a new tutor assigned. The service is also pricey. I do think it's worth the cost given the convenience, but in some places you could probably find equally good or better private tutors for that price. **Recommendations to others considering Varsity Tutors:** Could work for you if you're patient and willing to wait when necessary. **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** Varsity tutors has tutors available for almost any subject you can think of (and probably some that you can't). They have gone above and beyond what I thought an education based company ever could. I had an incredibly great experience with their client reps when originally signing up and they have followed up on any inquiry I have submitted. **Recommendations to others considering Varsity Tutors:** Be very specific about your requirements for tutoring. Trust your tutors, follow their instructions but be transparent of what is and what is not clicking as far as new material. **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have found myself more organized and focused. My son love his YouTube videos. After that class, we started exploring the other classes Varsity Tutors had to offer and purchased small group classes Marine Biology and Big Cats. Not only were these classes informative in areas my son loves learning about, but also they were so fun. He couldn't quit talking about sharks and lions for weeks. Given these experiences, I am considering signing him up for 1:1 tutoring to give him the extra support he needs with his school work. Great experience so far! **What do you dislike about Varsity Tutors?** I wish Coyote Peterson could come back and teach more classes! My son keeps asking if / when he will come back! If you are reading this Varsity Tutors, please bring Coyote back. I am sure thousands of kids feel the same way... **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** Virtual learning has been hard this year, but Varsity Tutors has made it easier for us. I have been pleasantly surprised by the level of expertise my son can find outside of the traditional classroom. I would like to see the company expand its tutor and student data base to being international. **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** The Varsity Tutors shared screen platform in conjunction with video calling makes tutoring students easy and rewarding. The platform allows tutors to work remotely from anywhere at just about any time, offering flexible scheduling. ### 11. As a tutor, Varsity Tutors brings you opportunities to teach and assist students at all levels. Once you set up your account and are approved, you can begin using their interface and being sent students. **What do you dislike about Varsity Tutors?** Whether or not this is supposed to relate to the software alone, I’m not sure. But as a tutor the greatest pitfall is the pay rate. The tutors are heavily underpaid in my opinion, and I believe Varsity Tutors takes too large of a cut (must be about 50%). **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** The interface for tutoring students is a bit complicated (not terribly) and can be hard to get the student to understand what to do. I use the software as both a student preparing for entrance exams but also refer the students I tutor to it for additional help after-hours or when I can't be reached. It also features a mobile app for on the go access which is very convenient. **What do you dislike about Varsity Tutors?** It is sometimes difficult to navigate site and you can't see prior questions of the day. There is also some upselling. **Recommendations to others considering Varsity Tutors:** If you are looking for additional help, the convenience of a mobile app and cheaper test prep than some of the traditional companies then varsity tutoring may be right for you. **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** It helps with giving students additional resources off-campus for help. You are able to keep track of all your students, as well as find new ones and change your availability. Other tutoring related information is available as well in your online account. Varsity Tutors does an excellent job of Tech Support and gives teachers all the information they need to successfully use the online platform. The online classroom is easy to use. Varsity Tutors sends you notifications when you have new opportunities and reminders of upcoming sessions. **What do you dislike about Varsity Tutors?** I do not believe that anyone could utilize Varsity Tutors as a primary source of income because opportunities are quickly snatched up. Students also tend to be unreliable and uncommitted. **What problems is Varsity Tutors solving and how is that benefiting you?** Using the Varsity Tutors platform is an excellent way to connect with students who have a need for your expertise but are located outside of your local area.
