"Starburst as query engine with modern GDPR compliant datalake"
4/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

Super easy to manage. Good query editor. Responsive autoscaling with good performance in query execution. Support for different datasources and federated query execution. Great customer support. Easy to implement and start using Starburst Galaxy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Catalog features are still basic and lack certain functionalities. It's a lot of manual effort to maintain access policies as we have to add each schema/table while creating policies. We are missing AI features to convert text to queries, optimize certain queries etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Efficient solution for data queries across multiple sources"
4/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

When it comes to what I like most about Starburst, I believe that one of the greatest benefits is the ability to run highly complicated queries on many data sources simultaneously, and the fact that it can do it without having to shuffle the information. This makes our analysis work much easier. Integrating with reporting tools like Tableau improves our reporting by adding rich visualization on top of the provided data. The ability to quickly and effectively process complex questions further enhances the value of detailed data analysis. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

The only issue that may be associated with using Starburst is the relatively high cost structure that may not be sustainable for teams and businesses of a moderate size. Due to this, it becomes quite challenging to justify the cost against the benefits that come with using this device. Additionally, although it is robust in many ways, there is always the issue of slow query speed when dealing with very large datasets. This occasional lag can cause havoc for data analysis and decrease the overall efficiency. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Lauren Kim of Starburst

"This advanced query engine significantly improves data analysis"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

In my perspective, probably one of the potent aspects of Starburst is its powerful query engine since it offers broad queries for big streams of data and inquires from many sources. It has been quite useful to compile data from a number of data bases into one and easy to analyze from the same platform. Since it interconnects with data warehouses and BI tools, we can generate vast reports and analyses without moving much information. This has enhanced our decision making as well as operations in general. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Starburst eliminates the issues associated with data discovery and management for large scale analytics and queries since it is a single platform that serves as a powerful data processing tool. It has been possible to create summative reports and analyses that would have otherwise required amalgamation of data across various systems. Consequently, our team can quickly make more effective decisions, thus improving the general team performance and strategy development. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Lauren Kim of Starburst

"Unified data queries significantly enhanced our productivity"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

I think the most useful function of Starburst is its capacity to query several sources at once. What makes it stand out is that it excels particularly well with big data, which eventually allows for quicker processing. How it connects to other applications such as Tableau for dashboards and Apache Kafka for real time data feeding improves our total effectiveness. I have found this unified approach to data management as a marked improvement in our analytical functions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

The main downside is that Starburst may become resource intensive, which results in some implications for performance with very large data sets. This can hamper our analysis and the overall productivity of the workflow. Furthermore, system setup and configuration is not very intuitive and this has made initial training time long for new users. Sometimes these issues have led to a decline in our productivity and more effort was needed to handle them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Lauren Kim of Starburst

Hi Philippe!

Thank you for your insightful feedback on Starburst. We're glad to hear that its ability to query multiple sources and handle big data, as well as its integration with tools like Tableau and Apache Kafka, has significantly improved your analytical functions and efficiency. We appreciate your input regarding resource intensity and the challenges with setup and configuration, particularly for new users. These are important considerations, and we’re committed to improving these areas.

"Complex queries aren't problem anymore"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

The most appealing aspect of Starburst in my opinion is the ability to have all the data in a single query layer. This makes its based on SQL interface ideal for complex query across numerous systems without overburdening by the data. I appreciate its ability to work alongside our current data structure, and the real time nature of the data obtained from it. This has improved the effectiveness of the analytical work we do and how we make decisions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Starburst is not as optimal as it could be when used on data sets of very large sizes. It is common for the query to be processed for more time than is desired by the user, a condition that affects the efficiency levels. Further, while the SQL interface is rich, novices will find difficulty in using it for they will have to learn SQL to perform operations. These have almost at one time given rise to problems that include latency and sometimes necessitated additional time to enhance query performance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Lauren Kim of Starburst

Hi Daniele!

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Starburst. We're pleased that the platform’s ability to consolidate data into a single query layer has improved the efficiency of your analytical work and decision-making processes. We understand your concerns regarding performance with very large datasets and the learning curve for SQL for less experienced users. These insights are valuable, and we’ll continue to explore ways to enhance query performance and ease of use. We look forward to supporting your ongoing success.

"Efficient querying solution across multiple data sources"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

What I consider most impressive is the way Starburst can query data from multiple sources as long as it doesn’t have to move or duplicate them. Namely, it has helped to optimize our work process, providing better data processing from such sources as AWS S3 and PostgreSQL. The key enhancement offered by the software has been ability to handle complex queries and integrate well with the current data architecture, which has significantly boosted our ability to identify and use data analytics in decision making. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

One area that may be tricky in Starburst is the setup and configuration of the platform. While the platform is highly versatile, fine tuning how it interacts with different data sources can be surprisingly cumbersome at times. This has taken a lot of time to set up initially and has required a more technical team from us than we had anticipated. Moreover, inexperience is a concern that can result in a time consuming period before they can start contributing which has been an issue. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Lauren Kim of Starburst

Hi Karche!

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback on Starburst. We're glad to hear that its ability to query data from multiple sources without moving or duplicating it has optimized your workflow and enhanced your data analytics capabilities. We appreciate your insights on the challenges with setup and configuration, and we understand how fine-tuning for different data sources can be time-consuming. We’ll continue to work on making the platform even more user-friendly for teams like yours.

"We finally found a way to improve data processes and decision making in our company"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

What I like most about Starburst is that it assimilates well with tools like Tableau and AWS S3 to perform queries on data without any hindrance. In this case, it is very friendly to use and hence, does not cause a difficulty when dealing with large datasets. Starburst is wonderful because it enables me to query other sources while still being at the data, no more moving the data around all the time! I especially like the functionality of dealing with different kinds of data, which definitely makes the work of my team more effective. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

A drawback of Starburst is the complex setup that can be technically challenging, especially if the team tries to implement it in systems that do not allow it easily. There were certain challenges that we experienced during the implementation process and this hampered our schedule a little. Moreover, the reaction of customer support was not as fast as we expected, which made the problem solving stage longer than it could be. Some of these issues caused some frustration, especially when we were still setting up the various software solutions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Megan Kemphaus of Starburst

Thank you, Aira, for your feedback! We're glad Starburst is improving your data processes and decision-making, and we appreciate your insights on areas where we can improve.

"A true game changer for many data querying processes"
4/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

One point worth considering is that Starburst is designed to work with various data sources which means that data processing is a lot easier. The plethora of features it has especially on querying large is quite helpful in enhancing our work progression. We have connected it to other applications such as our BI tools and the data lake and no problems have arisen from it. This integration capability is a game changer because it eliminates the difficulty in managing data from multiple sources thus enhancing our workflow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Overall, the main drawback of Starburst is that it is not very easy to set up, particularly for first time users. This resulted in some discrepancies in our work schedule as we anticipated in our project plan. Furthermore, owing to our rarity in its application, it took extra time to familiarise ourselves with it. The customer support is also not up to the mark at some times, they take more time to reply and on occasions this delay has messed up our working schedule as we needed immediate help. Starburst has been a much needed upgrade from our opensource presto and CDH approach for our Data Lake and Lakehouse needs. Our vendor experience with Starburst has been top notch, with their exceptional architects working hand in hand with us throughout the process. They have been willing to address new feature requests and even turn them around very quickly. They have been a great partner willing to take our inputs to their product roadmap and have executed flawlessly for the past 5 years that we have worked with them. Their user friendly interface has constantly had new upgrades all the time and a great hit with our customer base. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Starburst is a niche player in the Datalakehouse space and while they are a connector company and work with other products in the ecosystem, we wish they were a player that brings the same high standards to other areas of the data ecosystem. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"We fixed many issues with efficient data access and querying solution"
4/5
What do you like best about Starburst?

I personally favor Starburst for its enhancement on the query aspect and the numerous features it brings to the table. The ability to work with several sources at once is very useful and simplifies the process of querying data a lot. It has many features and I like that I can always get help from customer support when I need something explained to me. It has only been used more frequently in our team due to the reliable and fast results it produces making it one of the most useful tools in the team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

The one thing that I do not like with regards to Starburst is the fact that its interfaces are very confusing. Many of its features are not immediately obvious and can be confusing to a new user, therefore, making it take a steep learning curve. These make our onboarding time consuming occasionally leading to usage blunders. In addition, documentation is not as detailed as they ought to be, making it hard to address problems as soon as possible. These problems contribute to the decreased productivity and longer time taken to train new employees. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Megan Kemphaus of Starburst
