Sandbox protection, which is included and protects against zero-day malware and crypto viruses. Other solutions like Barracuda and Mimecast charge extra (quite a bit extra) for this add-on. The spam reports are easy to read and releasing email, or allowing a sender is simple. What is missing is the ability for a user to allow or block an entire domain from the report, instead of just one sender. To block/allow the entire domain, the user must login to their spam quarantine and manually create the entry, which can lead to spelling errors. Outlook plugin is very useful. Too bad there isn't a mobile app available. **What do you dislike about SpamTitan Email Security?** Not MSP friendly. Alias email addresses are controlled at the root level, not for each customer separately. Out of the box, this doesn't stop much spam and has too many false positives. The bayesian filter needs to learn what is and what is not spam, but the filter cannot learn something is spam unless a user tags it as spam. This can either be done by looking at history in the quarantine filter, which only the admin has access to, or by using the Outlook plugin. At the time of this review, the Outlook plugin does not support special characters in a user's password. Therefore, the password must only contain a-zA-Z0-9, which is not very secure. At least 2 factor authentication is supported, but unfortunately, it cannot be required. A user will receive only 1 spam report per day automatically. They can request a new report either by using the Outlook plugin, or by clicking a link on the previous spam report. Of course, this means instead of getting a bunch of spam, the user has to hold on to at least 1 piece of spam just to get another report for the day. This was one thing we are missing from our previous antispam provider. They allowed you to set what intervals you wanted the report to arrive, which we had set 3 times per day. The user had less to think about. Support is lacking. Some days they are quick to respond, other days, not so much. Phone support is also on and off. Some days they answer the phone, other days, voicemail. Don't expect a response from voicemail. I have never received a call back. **Recommendations to others considering SpamTitan Email Security:** If you have a small fortune to spend on anti-spam, look at Barracuda or Mimecast. Otherwise, this is a great solution for the price, if you have the time to get it working. **What problems is SpamTitan Email Security solving and how is that benefiting you?** After getting all rules in place and tweaking settings, it works rather well. There are quite a few options to tighten down spam recognition, but most are not enabled by default. The interface itself has a few quirks and is a bit out dated. The look isn't a big deal, but some things just don't make any sense where they are located. Why would a user's alias be placed in a completely different menu from where the user profile resides? It makes no sense. It would also be nice if the spam report could also include a link to the spam quarantine. There is an option of one-click login, which automatically logs you in to the quarantine, without the need for username and password. Of course, this is a huge security hole. If someone was able to hack your email account and use that link to get into your spam quarantine, they could setup an allow list to let all kinds of bad stuff through and a block list to keep anyone good from getting to you. All-in-all, this solution works, but it isn't the easiest thing to setup and there are a few problems that should have been fixed by now (I'm looking at you Outlook plugin developer). ### 7. I also like that there is an outlook add-on that can release a digest at the click of a button. **What do you dislike about SpamTitan Email Security?** I don't like that anyone who uses AmazonSES as their email sending system gets caught in the spamtitan net. One of our emails that we want to get through cannot be whitelisted as it would open up all other potential spam emails that come from mass-emailers using Amazon. We are able to catch most spam. It's very easy to moderate for our IT team, so that's a huge benefit for our small company! ### 9. SpamTitan on average is about equal to accuracy of filtering. SpamHero was almost perfect. Tech support is responsive but requests for basic & ergonomic features remains untouched that i can tell. **What do you dislike about SpamTitan Email Security?** 1. Can't view quarantined messages from daily email summary; there's no link to your (web) dashboard in the daily email. 2. As a reseller, each of our clients must be manually set up to be their own admin to manage their accounts 3. It's good at filtering blacklisted IP mailservers (RBL), but lets obvious phishing/spam thru. (We had also tested SpamHero which was excellent for precise filtering, but expensive and did not allow reseller features- it was all "one account" for several hundred clients) 4. SpamTitan doesn't handle large numbers of aliases (forwarders) well at all. ST support folks must enter my/my client alias list MANUALLY, if there's more than a few, there are bugs in ST. Our office email address has several hundred due to various feeder/branch businesses, and we get 2-3 dozen quarantine reports emailed daily when there should only be ONE. 5. Like the other vendors, ST has a spambank@ email address to forward to for spam messages that got thru (were not filtered). Edgewave had an automated mechanism that reported back (daily for the reports that day) that listed the messages reported that should have been quarantined and the action taken by EW (usually ADDED PATTERN to database library). This was helpful in that if other response codes were listed, it could help us debug mailserver situations. ST does not have a SpamReport like this 6. The userability of the admin interface could be improved: there are no bulk tools to change Quarantine levels of multiple accounts; the checking of the list of quarantined messages is awkward (too many clicks needed; checkboxes are left checked during exploration of multiple messages). Message activity log database "reporting" search fields are funky. **Recommendations to others considering SpamTitan Email Security:** If one has not used an off-server filtering vendor previously, one doesn't know all the details of day to day usability to look for. When you run into the situations is when you see there're features lacking or poor implementation. **What problems is SpamTitan Email Security solving and how is that benefiting you?** Not much improved w.r.t. filtering accuracy over 2-3 years we've been with them. We left Edgewave because the company was sold and there was NO communications. EW server IPs and server FQDNs changed and our clients did not receive messages for over a week before we tracked it all down. ### 12. If using virtualization, I would recommend having a second machine running the FreeBSD version that Spamtitan is currently using (now FreeBSD 10.0). The only real headaches involve corruption of the root file system. In this case it's hugely helpful to have a second virtual machine where you can mount the SpamTitan Appliance's HD and fix the file system. Otherwise, you need to interrupt the boot process and the steps can get quite involved. After that, there many other valuable aspects I can mention so far: - The involvement from Titan HQs representative through the evaluation period - The technical support we are receiving from their local partner, 7x24x365 in spanish - SpamTitan being a lot easier to manage than the previous solutions - The API which allows us to get information that with our previous vendor was completely beyond our reach **What do you dislike about SpamTitan Email Security?** So far, after 2 months in production following 2 months of trial, and having migrated 15K users from 200 tenants, I can't find something I actually dislike. We had been working with them for almost 6 years, but we were having a lot of issues. From a lot of undetected malware, to an awful technical support. They were forcing us to purchase add-ons to improve malware detection. We lost 50% of our installed base because of all these issues in the last 12 months. We made a trial mirroring email traffic to Spam Titan, 90% of the malware and abnormal emails it filtered passed as undetected with the other vendor. We don't need to spend countless hours talking to upset customers. Also, Spam Titan has the same price of the basic product of the other vendor, but less than 40% of the price with all the required add-ons. ### 41. Support is responsive and it's easy to submit support requests or questions; they get answered within 24 hours or less. The set up process wasn't too bad either, and this was my first time setting up a spam filter program. Their sales reps and tech support people were very helpful in the process and they have a lot of documentation online to help you figure out how to set up everything correctly with different email servers. I wouldn't suggest doing it if you don't have some tech-savvy in you, but it doesn't require a dedicated IT department with years of experience. **What do you dislike about SpamTitan Email Security?** We are on SpamTitan Cloud. The most common complaint our users have is that the Quarantine report can only be emailed at most once per day, and it comes at about midnight our time (MST). That means any legitimate emails that got caught in the spam filter aren't seen until the next day. This can be frustrating when waiting for important emails. Unfortunately, on SpamTitan Cloud we are not given the option to adjust the time that this email is sent, and there is no option for it to get sent twice a day. It is at least quite easy for the administrator to log in to the spam filter and release any important emails - but we have to know that they're missing to do that, and it's frustrating for the user to have to ask and hope that it's in there. If that's something that would be a deal-breaker for you, I suggest going with their other version (I forget the name) that allows more customizing of the quarantine email option. I believe it's a bit more expensive but gives you more control. Outside of this issue, it's been pretty great! **Recommendations to others considering SpamTitan Email Security:** I would definitely recommend this product if you're looking for an affordable, easy-to-use spam filter with tech support included. **What problems is SpamTitan Email Security solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our previous spam filter was Mimecast, and it was controlled by an outside company. The interface was terrible and we were constantly getting locked out of our accounts, and we were charged for every password reset. It was also quite expensive. SpamTitan has helped us greatly reduce our IT budget, increased our ability to fix problems quickly since we have control over the system, and given us tech support that doesn't charge us per support ticket. ### 42. One of the few companies that still allow on-prem appliances. Base license includes HA/Failover. Also, licensing ranges are pretty well set, and they're pretty good about not being annoying about that 501st user. Logging and searching through e-mail history and quarantine is very good. BSD Base makes it very stable. Outlook Plugin exists. E-Mail Encryption option includes parsing for CC# and SSNs automatically. Users have the ability to not only do tag-and-pass if desired, but also to request digest e-mails on-demand. **What do you dislike about SpamTitan Email Security?** Overall, filtering isn't quite as good as our previous solution. It's getting better as the Bayesian data builds, but we're four months in and there are a number of e-mails I've marked as spam well over a dozen times and still end up in my inbox. Support was good at first, but has dropped off significantly after a few months. I'll call, get told to put in a ticket, I'll get a response, I'll reply, then I don't hear back until the ticket closes due to staledating. Love a number of the support guys as I do, the follow-up is hit or miss. The Outlook plugin - a big selling point for many of our users - is of limited utility. Users will whitelist/blacklist e-mails, only to get e-mails from those addresses again unless I add it to the global allow/deny lists, and there's no 'allow/deny domain' option in the plugin. E-mail encryption is handled by an integrated cloud option, but costs extra. Needs more system resources than our previous on-prem appliance. A niche situation admittedly, but the only way to download an e-mail from the archive is to copy/paste it into a text document and save it as a .eml file; this isn't automated in any way and is very time consuming if it's needed. Re-sending an e-mail to an Exchange server doesn't change the message ID, so Exchange has a tendency to summarily reject it. **What problems is SpamTitan Email Security solving and how is that benefiting you?** Spamtitan does ultimately minimize the amount of e-mail delivered to our mail server. ### 43. In one instance it actually crashed my VM and I had to restore from backup.
