due to the complex functions and models available within STAR-CCM+ it is not straight forward to use, but the support is very helpful.

any functional virtual test is done with STAR-CCM+ (flow analysis, conjugate heat transfer, multiphase flow). Virtual testing = simulation is key in the product development process in automotive industry

STAR-CCM+ stands out in the CFD software market with its unique and power meshing capabilities, its comprehensive suite of physical models, its single user interface, and powerful post-processing features. Nothing else in the industry combines all the tools that a CFD engineer needs into one streamlined package.

STAR-CCM+ has a 13000+ page user guide and theory manual. This can be daunting for new users.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

The initial setup is very intuitive to set up Simulation in STAR-CCM+, You can additionally implement custom outputs  and use external data to interpolate for example for temperature fields etc.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

Sometimes I have issues with the meshes that created for the domain and solid, when importing from NX CAD files. I get issues like a created gap appearing between solid and fluid domain which should not be the case. There is a workaround with creating both in NX first.

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We do all the Conjugate Heat Transfer calculation of our Turbine blades with Star-CCM+. Complicated Setup with a lot of external inputs and outputs.

It has very user friendly interface. As a CFD engineers we have already complex  problems. So it's good to have a software like Star CCM because of it's simple interface.

I couldn't find a thing that i don't like yet.

The integration of the preprocess and the postprocess in a single tool and within a single workflow.
The easy automation through java macros, simulation operations and templates.

Customer support is one of the best ones available.

Sometimes the model has to be tailored a lot and requires an expert to do that in order to validate with experimental data.

Sometimes meshing fails for no reason.

Learning curve may not be the shorter one.

General fluid flow and multiphase problems are solved using STAR-CCM+, reducing the number of physical tests and increasing the responsiveness earlier in the design process

Surface meshing time is too long due to not being able to use parallel meshing.
VOF models take too long to simulate.

Fluid flows for high pressure and low pressure flows, two phase flows and thermal flows.

While working with software found  software as flowless smooth and reliable. Truly All-in-One, no need separate tools. Structural, thermal, and flow simulations all live under one roof.

If you are a user, then you will find it awesome, but newcomers may struggle with the complexity of the physics setup, scripting, or workflows. so there should be a structured program from beginner to expert user level.

It has excellent meshing capabilities and hence may be utilized for CFD analysis.

The user interface is likewise excellent, with useful commands and powerful analytical add-ins.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ is a very usefull analysis software along with the likes of ANSYS.
It has strong meshing capabilities and hence can be used for CFD analysis also.
The user interface is also very good with helpful commands and strong analysis addins.
One of the most usefull thing is the parallel computing which can save a lot of time when developing prototypes for various applications.
Its updates and continous developments makes it very safe alternative for the automotive manufacturing sectors.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

I have been working with STAR-CCM+ for more than 12 years. My experiences are consistently positive.
The speed at which the software is being developed is impressive. The variety of possible applications leaves little to be desired.
In particular, the adaptation of the own development workflow with the help of Java macros needs to be emphasized here.
At Denso Germany, for example, we have completely automated the entire simulation pipeline, starting with geometry import through to post-processing. This was a game changer in our development work.
In addition to the quality of the software, the quality of the support is also of the utmost importance. We can't imagine anything better here.
Thanks to our dedicated support engineer, we always have the feeling that we are in good hands. The support impresses with the fast response time and the great professional competence.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

There are always things that can be improved. Here are three small examples: 
- better initialization of transient simulations (can be done via simulation operations, but is a bit cumbersome)
- there is no direct inzterface to professional material property software (e.g. Refprop) 
- isolated volumes in the calculation domain often lead to divergence

Mainly, we solve the airflow through automotive HVAC and perform optimization of airflow distribution, pressure losses and temperture distribution.

Star CCM+ is an extremely advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) numerical calculation software that deserves praise. It is certainly one of the best tools available on the market for fluid flow analysis and simulation.

One of the most positive aspects of Star CCM+ is its versatility. The program offers a wide range of functions and tools that allow users to model various physical phenomena, simple cases of fluid flow, heat transfer, multiphase tasks, but also gives the possibility to describe the problem with user-defined variables and equations.
Star CCM+ also stands out for its intuitive and user-friendly interface. Even people with no prior experience in CFD numerical calculations can quickly learn how to use this software.  Everything is in one oprogamme: the ability to edit CAD models, enter boundary conditions and define the entire problem, perform calculations, and analyze the results and visualize the data.
Another advantage of Star CCM+ is its flexibility in license management, both for pre and post processing as well as for parallel calculations (1 license unlimited CPU).
In addition, Star CCM+ provides simplicity in creating and using scripts, which can be directly recorded in the program and used despite the lack of programming knowledge. It has a built-in scripting language that allows users to automate repetitive tasks, customize analysis, manipulate data and the entire task of preprocessing, calculation and postprocessing.
Star CCM+ provides users with the ability to restore a session if the program crashes. This feature is extremely useful, as it allows users to restore and continue setting up a task.
Another advantage of Star CCM+ is the auto-save function. The software provides the possibility of elestic, user-defined recording of calculation progress. This way, the user does not lose his previous work and can continue the analysis from the point where it was interrupted.

The first disadvantage is the large file size generated by Star CCM+.This can lead to problems in storing, transferring and managing these files.

The most important thing for me is that this is modern software, high fidelity, easy to use and written in Java (GUI, of course). All solvers and main features can be found in one window - I would like to thank to you immensely. I have started to work in Star CCM+ in 2016 and I continue this road. I become more and more expert in CFD field and I am very happy of easeness to using whole simulation software.

It is very difficult to find any disadvantages. From time to time solvers crashes, but of course it is caused by my mistakes. Have the experience with the software from the concurent, I think that I should not complain.

Flexibility to pipeline the workflow and streamline multiphysics projects. 
Polyhedral type meshing saves time and effort for setting up the simulation with the adaptive cell convergence. Proves useful to a beginner who wants to focus initially on the solver models for comparing CFD results.

Community support for CCM+ is inferior owing to its usage.
UI is not as friendly as other Industry standard software. 
Integration with third-party software for modeling leaves much to be desired.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

Robust and capable solver, with vast amounts of possibilities. 
Its numerical solving scheme can be forgiving to new users or bad quality meshes.
Visualization of results is very vivid compared to other solvers.
The support offered, is simply awesome. Prompt and efficient, the support engineers always go the extra mile on every single occasion to make sure every issue is resolved in the quickest and best possible way.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

Scenes can be confusing to understand sometimes. 
The whole region-based approach can be very confusing, as well (in terms of boundaries, etc).
Based on the previous observation, users should not have to remesh every time they make small changes in a region or e.g. assigning a boundary to a different surface of the same region (at least when it has similar properties, if they're both walls for example) as remeshing is taking a lot of time, especially in large mesh cases.
Interfaces should be created automatically.
The solver should be a bit "smarter" when assigning the part surfaces to the surfaces of the inherited parts produced from operations, as even with slight changes, this usually needs to be done manually, because the selection blanks out and the user only finds out about it when the mesher fails to go through.
Further to the aforementioned, when remeshing, obsolete elements like interfaces from the previous mesh which are now empty, should be automatically deleted.

I am utilizing Star CCM+ in a wide variety of activities, using it solve all sorts of problems, ranging from usual run-of-the-mill everyday CFD cases, to project development, research and development of future products, as well as ad hoc jobs which may come up every now and then.

The workflow is very structured, with intuitive access to each step of the pre-processing and post-processing at every stage of the project. Many physical models with a robust solver allow to simulate multiple physics problems. The great advantage is the practically unlimited possibility of customization using Java macros. Extensive tutorial guide, Siemens support center and competent support are very helpful in solving complex cases.

There are some issues with the computation of the multiphase flows. User-guide has helpful content, but the structure and especially searching tool in help should be improved. Error code information should be extended to help find an issue. Design tools need further improvement to be more useful in case of 3D simplification process.

Compared to the previous application I used, I was most impressed with the preparation and processing of discretization meshes. The process is much easier and more efficient

The biggest drawback of STAR CCM+ is the geometry preparation module. 3D CAD is an unintuitive tool and switching to it from Space Claim is very challenging. I hope it will get upgraded soon.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

The ability to modify the model on the fly without interrupting the run.  Automatic placement of prism layer mesh on the solid boundaries as well as the interior wall boundaries.

The ability to handle very skewed meshes by turning on cell quality remediation tool.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

The "3D-CAD Models" under the geometry node has a limitation on the size of solid primitive.  The maximum size of a block is something like 1000 m.  This situation is encountered when analyzing exhaust plume flow around a ship which is 300 m.  The solid primitive (block) would represent the ambient air.

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We routinely use VOF and DFBI modules to predict ship resistance.  We use the single phase flow to analyze the exhaust plume over the ship superstructure.  Occassionally, we use this software to predict pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient for exhaust ducts.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

From meshing to post-processing STAR-CCM+ is robust and easy to use. The library of solvers and submodels is extensive.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

It would be helpful if multi-step workflows were more accessible. For instance, I'd like to be able to submit a job to the cluster where it first generates the mesh, then generates a steady-state solution, then transitions to a transient DES solution. It would also be helpful to make simulation parameters easily accessible in the form of an input text file. This would allow the simulation can be manipulated without having to open the full STAR-CCM+ GUI. I know that java format files can be used to manipulate a simulation file, however, the java syntax is complex and significant time is required to ensure that the file will be accepted.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

The software is quite easy to understand and learn, the GUI is quite intuitive and the overall experience is definitly nice. In my past I used OpenFoam, so, with respect to that, STAR-CCM+ makes the life of a CFD engineer much easier.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

Many times modifying the setup of a simulation is quite tedious, due to the fact that almost everything is kinda linked together. Also, I would like to have the possibility to export data from a sim file and import them in another one, similarly to what OpenFoam can do with the function mapFields.

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am simulating a microfluid dynamics problem for predicting the behaviour of water in very small gaps, and the software is beneficial for how it handles all the workflow process, from pre- to post-processing.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

- GUI: User inputs are well represented in simulation view menu. This means that almost every action is repeatible 

- 3D-CAD: has sufficient features to eliminate the need to revert back to CAD pacakges (most of the time)

- Mesher: Meshing pipeline WoW provides a clear workflow. Mesher in general quite robust.

- Post-processing: Customizable scenes, plots and reports allow for a very easy method to get indended visuals and quantitative results

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

- Multiphase flows: AMR with mutiphase still has implemenation issues, resulting in unphysical solution. 

- Some legacy features are still available in GUI, even though they're rarely used and not recommended by support.

- Documentation: Sometimes difficult to find info on specific topics via search. Also, documentation is not detailed enough or scattered

-Solution histories workflow: .simh files are prone to becoming corrupt leading to a less robust way of working for large file sizes

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Provides faster iteration time for new designs and supports product development by providing more detailed insight into the key parameters affecting KPIs. Mainly used for multiphase and moving mesh simulations for complex geometries.

- all steps on simulation process are in one single screen;
- intuitive work flow;
- several models available;
- strong and reliable mesher when  dealing with highly complex geometry
- some of the most robust Eulerian multiphase flow solvers;
- ability to tune expert parameters;
- reliable and knowleadeable customer support;
- easily connectivity with HEEDS, AMESim and NX Nastran enabling multiphysics simulation.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

- Lagrangian solver seems to be less robust;
- Transient particle tracking workflow could be faster;
- Thin mesher to bulk mesh transition can be improved to avoud too manny extra steps by the user to have an acceptable transition.

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

STAR-CCM+ has benefitted me by enabling me and my team to solve the most diverse type of flow and thermal issues in the industry:
- calculate pressure waves generated by multiple moving parts;
- sloshing (VOF) calculations to predict forces on lenses;
- meniscus stability (VOF) in micro channels;
- flow uniformity by very complex micro channels;
- slip flows;
- conjugates heat transfer;
- single micro-droplets and micro-bubble transport;
- surface contamination prediction;
-  and many others over the past 15 years.

**What do you like best about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

What I like about the software is:

-They have regular software updates.  (Even thought updating the software in your machine so often is not a nice thing for heavy installations...)

-User support communication with users is usually fast and they offer a close approach so that they understand our needs under our projects and help us to improve our methodology.

-The GUI interface it's somehow user-friendly, not perfect, but quite nice. It's partially well-structured interface (requires goign throught tutorials to understand it well)

- It could be improved but the left menu is clear and straightforward workflow

-  Even though it has limited functions, it's nice to have a built-in CAD modeller including parametric capabilities

- Something that I really like is the fact it integrates a powerful post-processing capabilities pack.

- Support portal abd trainings available

- Detailed user guide, documentation and tutorial files avaulable to download.

- Written guides and videos on portal  (but limited acces to some of them...

- Example cases available for download on portal  (quite simpel thought).

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

-The sudden JAVA errors: Sometimes we get errors that are not clear or easy to debug because are not self-explanatory errors but just standard "Java xxxx" error that tells nothing about the reason.  

-It will be nice to have a Java macros or scripts library available on the Support portal. Nowadays it's not easy to find a ready-to-use macro or script. Unless you ask to your support engineer

-Opening a file from a big model takes a long, even if sometimes you just want to change a parameter and save the model, it's time-consuming...

-They could somehow integrate the Design Manager into the main software to run several cases with different parameter values. But this may be subjective...

-The CAD modeller/availabilities has not yet have video tutorials accessible without paying for extra training courses. So the learning curve can be a bit time-consuming and challenging. That stops us from using it, and we may end up using an external Pre-processor for CAD geometry manipulation. 

-They should find a way to make the multiphysics simulations more intuitive to setup, mesh, interfaces  and solver .(like fluid and thermal solid plus radiation)

-The available free training or videos on the support portal are quite limited compared with the training that requires paying.. 

-Tutorial examples are simple and a bit "idealised" cases far away from real-world complex cases.  It should be more variety of examples, and models, in the support portal.  More complex cases close to real-world projects. 

A few not-so-important points to mention:

-Sometimes the software forces us to run again the full mesh operations when we actually  (or apparently) changed something that does not affect the mesh, so it should NOT ask to run again the full mesh operations.

-Since they update the software quite often, sometimes it creates problems if you save the model with a newer version and then your work colleague can not open it unless uses the same last version... 

- Not a big deal, but years ago they had a workflow based in Parts, then they switched to Regions, sometimes can be a mix of it, and it can be easy to get confused about the best way or correct way to do things when dealing with complex simulations, and multiphysics involved.

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Internal flow/aerodynamics and Heat transfer problems within the Automotive industry.
Also Aeroacoustics. Potential cosimualtions.

It is handy to have many capabilities all in one, even though that may make things a bit complex at the beginning. Every time they are offering some degree of step automation, or workflow options, that we are starting to use and may save us time, or increase our performance.  It does require an investment in learning, especially if you want to use fully the software's potential it requires learning about many options and capabilities that sometimes are a bit hidden until someone shows it to you or explains how to properly use it.  So the workflow has always room to be optimized.    Also, the template new option may be a time-saving tool for us when we work on similar CFD models type.   All that is making that STARCCM is every time more the favourite tool to use when you want to model either an external or internal flow/aerodynamics and Heat transfer problem.

As an engineer who has used StarCCM+ for several years, I can confidently say that it is a powerful and reliable software for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multiphysics simulations. Here are some of its Pros.

Pros:
1) User-friendly interface: StarCCM+ provides a straightforward, intuitive user interface that enables users to quickly and easily construct complex simulations. Its drag-and-drop functionality makes creating complicated shapes, running simulations, and reviewing the outcomes simple.
2) Strong simulation abilities: StarCCM+ is capable of simulating a wide range of multiphysics phenomena, such as fluid flow, heat transfer, combustion, and electromagnetics. Its strong solver technology enables precise and trustworthy simulations.
3) Scalability: StarCCM+ is capable of handling simulations of any scale, from tiny models to enormous simulations of intricate systems.
4) Post-processing integration: StarCCM+ features robust post-processing facilities that enable users to see and examine simulation results. It also features a tool for customisable reporting that makes it simple to communicate outcomes with coworkers.

**What do you dislike about Simcenter STAR-CCM+?**

On the other hand, it does have its cons.

Cons:
1) High licence costs: StarCCM+ is among the most costly CFD programmes available. Small enterprises and individual users may be discouraged by its high cost.
2) Steep learning curve:StarCCM+ has a challenging learning curve, especially for novice users. To use it properly, you must have substantial training and expertise.
3) Inadequate documentation: StarCCM+'s documentation might occasionally be lacking, especially for more complex capabilities. Consumers might have to rely on outside sources, including internet discussion boards or technical help, to fix problems.

**What problems is Simcenter STAR-CCM+ solving and how is that benefiting you?**

StarCCM+ helps us solve various problems in multiphase with the help of its advanced hybrid-multiphase capabilities. Beyond this and the simulations involving regular fluid flows, StarCCM+ has also been used to simulate hypersonic flows over various geometries.
