After many years of using Star-CCM+ and other commercial (and open-source) CFD tools, one main feature always brings me back to Simcenter Star-CCM+: its continuous improvements and new features. Other tools focus on broader compatibility across multiple platforms, but at the cost of robustness and speed. Siemens seems to be focused on both. I really like that Simcenter STAR-CCM+ offers a start-to-end process for CFD analysis all within a single environment. This includes pre-processing, CAD preparation, meshing, simulation, and post-processing. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ has a significantly steep learning curve. It takes time for new users to understand all the features and advanced capabilities. Plus, it requires huge computer resources to run effectively. They could improve by offering more detailed tutorials or comprehensive training guides to help get up to speed. The CAD modeller/availabilities has not yet have video tutorials accessible without paying for extra training courses. So the learning curve can be a bit time-consuming and challenging. What I like most is how quickly I can evaluate different design concepts during the development phase. The main challenge for me is onboarding junior engineers. I work with quite a few less experienced engineers, and getting them up to speed with STAR-CCM+ takes a fair amount of time. There are also quite a few options and settings, which can be overwhelming for someone using the software for the first time. I often have to spend time reviewing setups and explaining why certain approaches are preferred, rather than just showing them where to click.

For more complex simulations, the computational requirements can also become significant, so access to sufficient computing resources is important. Overall, I would say the biggest downside from my perspective is not the capability of the software, but the time and effort required to get new engineers to a level where they can use it independently and reliably. I like how Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automates mesh generation and the CAD cleanup process, saving me a lot of time. The quick integration for tasks like CAD cleanup, surface wrapping, and advanced meshing is really efficient. It's best part is it brings the entire CFD workflow into one evironment so I don't have to constantaly switch between different tools for geometry prepration, meshing, simulation. I particularly use the automated and semi automated meshing capabilities. It's steep learning curve especially for users who are new to CFD or moving from simpler simulation tools. Th number of available options and settings can sometime feel overwhelming and finding right config for a sepcific simulation may require going through quite a bit of documentaion. Siemens offers unique automation solutions such as the Siemens 1500 PLC, servo drives, and PROFIBUS I/O cards.
