**What do you like best about SAS/IML?**

Overall, SAS/IML is a robust and flexible programming language that is well-suited for statistical analysis and modeling. Its rich set of tools and functions, combined with its efficient matrix language and integration with other SAS products, make it a popular choice for data analysts and researchers in various industries.

**What do you dislike about SAS/IML?**

while SAS/IML is a powerful and versatile programming language, it may not be the best choice for all users, particularly those who are cost-sensitive or looking for a more accessible programming language.

**What problems is SAS/IML solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SAS/IML is an incredibly powerful tool for data analysts and statisticians. It provides a flexible and efficient environment for developing and implementing complex statistical algorithms and machine learning models, and its extensive library of functions and tools enables analysts to perform a wide range of data analysis tasks quickly and efficiently.

  ### 3. SAS IML as a learning tool in academe

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sam W. | Professor of Statistics, Department Chair, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 25, 2023

**What do you like best about SAS/IML?**

The ability for students to construct linear model analysis of the methods covered in class without simply relying on preset functions in SAS or other software. Students can see how the same structures and steps result in the appropriate analyses and can then see how the preset procedures in SAS give the same values.

**What do you dislike about SAS/IML?**

The learning curve can be a bit steep for students not as familiar with basic programming skills like loops and linear algebra skills like matrix mulitplication. This can be overcome with some basic training before diving into SAS/IML.

**What problems is SAS/IML solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Granting students a deeper understanding of the methodologies we teach in upper level statistics classes. Ability to see the calculations along the way "in action".

  ### 16. Handy to be able to perform matrix calculations, annoying that it is a separate (expensive) package

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 13, 2019

**What do you like best about SAS/IML?**

Being able to perform matrix calculations can be necessary for certain statistical analyses, and you can only perform these with SAS IML. You can also call R using IML, which can make advanced calculations easier than trying to do it solely in SAS.

**What do you dislike about SAS/IML?**

It's very frustrating how expensive this separate package is. I am not sure about the exact pricing, other than that my organization is not willing to pay for it because there are less expensive alternatives (R, Python, etc.) that can perform these calculations.

**What problems is SAS/IML solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This is the only package that will allow you to perform matrix math in SAS.

The fact that it provides an interface between SAS and R, thus enabling users to accomplish various data mining tasks without additional expense

**What do you dislike about SAS/IML?**

Cost. Since it is a separate module one can only enjoy its capabilities by purchasing it. I think that its interface with R should be part of base SAS

**Recommendations to others considering SAS/IML:**

Essential if one needs to either use R or take advantage of matrix computational abilities

**What problems is SAS/IML solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having an interface with R has allowed me to do numerous data mining tasks.
