Eliminating cloud waste and managing spend is one of the most persistent challenges for FinOps teams. Cloud usage is inherently elastic, but the financial instruments used to manage cost like Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and Committed Use Discounts are rigid. ProsperOps bridges this gap by integrating automated rate optimization with intelligent workload optimization, allowing organizations to continuously align cost with usage without manual oversight. If you're not using ProsperOps, what are you thinking? **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Larry H. | VP, Product, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** October 12, 2023 **What do you like best about ProsperOps?** I've used ProsperOps in three organizations now and I plan to do so every time. In summary, PO is "hands free" from human management, extremely effective at what it does and easy to integrate into process. Firstly, ProsperOps is so incredibly simple to use and almost entirely hands free after setup. You just let it run and it manages everything for you in a completely automated fashion. We had a person doing this for us and were able to retask them on more useful functions like reporting and analysis because this workload was no longer a concern! PO is SUPER effective at managing cost savings. Obviously Savings Plans are easy but the way they manage RIs enables us to save super high dollar amounts and ALSO to have a low time commitment. It's hard to explain but PO manages commits on cadence that eventually only has a 30 day renewal. That is, you can get 3 year discounts but only effectively have a 30 day commit to AWS. Trust me, I do not work there and have no reason to lie. It really does work that way. Lastly, integrating PO into our stack was super easy. They prebuild the CF templates for you and have a bunch of detailed reporting so your accounting/finance folks can handle the "true up" to the books. It's super easy to make this all work from both a human and technical perspective. All in all, you're nuts if you're not using PO. If you don't save at least 30% on your EC2 costs, you will save money. If you already save that much, you'll instead save a lot of time not having to babysit your RI commits. In either case, you win. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** There's really not much to say here. The only thing I've had issue with is that the explanation of what they do is really hard to understand because of how AWS does RIs. It's difficult to get buy in within your org because so few people can actually understand the technique and it sounds too good to be true. Have faith and persist and I promise you'll look like a hero once it's deployed. **What problems is ProsperOps solving and how is that benefiting you?** PO manages our RIs and SPs on AWS completely hands off. We don't need a FinOps team to manage this part of the work at all and we can retask our limited personnel toward value adding work like cost accounting and reports for app teams. ### 2. Integrating the ProsperOps platform into our AWS accounts was a very easy and quick process, and something that just continues to work without any intervention moving forward. In a world of automation, GitOps, IaC, container orchestration, and auto-scaling events, it's great to rely on a platform that responds in near real-time to infrastructure changes without any user intervention. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** There isn't anything to not like about ProsperOps. However, it would be great if their service supported AWS managed services, as well as other public cloud providers, such as GCP and Azure. All of which are probably part of a future roadmap, so it's hard for me to hold any of this against ProsperOps. **What problems is ProsperOps solving and how is that benefiting you?** Managing reservations, savings plans, and other cost saving offerings from public cloud providers, including AWS, can be an arduous task. ProsperOps offers a service to not only manage all of these, but constantly poll the resources that are provisioned at a given time and make adjustments to existing reservations and plans based on the results. The platform is also tunable in the sense of defining the level of coverage and potential risk you want to carry throughout a planned time frame, which makes it flexible for changing/growing organizations. Most of all, ProsperOps is saving my organization money. ### 3. I get an email each month highlighting the thousands of dollars saved by using their service. There is also a web dashboard to review how savings are calculated in great detail. Cost optimization of EC2 instances on AWS can be a complex and time-consuming process. ProsperOps has devised an AWS-approved way to automate most of this and get those discounts without ongoing attention or effort. The onboarding team at ProsperOps was also extremely helpful - they answered our questions thoroughly and did a lot of the heavy lifting to get the product set up on our AWS accounts. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** When ProsperOps first explained how they achieve their savings, it sounds like they are exploiting a loophole in AWS's pricing structure. However, it appears that AWS approves this method and expects it to be used. Beyond that, we have not had any reason to dislike this service! **What problems is ProsperOps solving and how is that benefiting you?** On-Demand EC2 instances are easy to deploy, but they are also the most expensive. Taking advantage of reserved instances saves a lot of money, but requires long-term commitments and ongoing attention from developers. Other methods of saving money on EC2 instances are also complex and require close attention. ProsperOps solves this by automating the application of cost-saving mechanisms to reduce the cost of EC2 instances. As a result, we benefit from cost savings without having to commit time and resources to thinking about reserved instances or other savings strategies. ### 4. It doesn't require any Agents to passively monitor our compute resources and we give a simplistic IAM role for its cost analysis. This role can be defined in such a way that ProsperOps doesn't have access privileges that could impact our application performance or security concerns which is convenient. It follows a top-notch SP (Savings Plan) Portfolio management which always fulfills our net cloud budget requirements. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** We have difficulty in dealing with our EC2 capacity reservations as ProsperOps only includes Regional reserved instances. For overcoming this, we opt for on-demand capacity reservation which is undertaken by the AWS platform itself. We can integrate multiple AWS accounts associated with our project into ProsperOps for analyzing all our computational resource usage and provide aggregated cloud savings. **What problems is ProsperOps solving and how is that benefiting you?** The majority of our cloud expenditure comes from the utilization of EC2 instances, Fargate deployments and Lambda executions in our organization. Since we started, our Effective Savings Rate has increased by 20.1%. ProsperOps cover 96% of your compute on-demand spend, and our saving tools are 99.9% utilized! What I really love about ProsperOps flexible commitments is the fact that they can be squashed allowing for drops in our AWS compute spend without fear or penaly of overcommitted discounts. Configuration for AWS was straightforward, and the onboarding process was very detailed. I was amazed at how flexible their instruments can be for the AWS environment. They are indeed experts in infrastructure cost optimization - they even recommended most optimal configuration of our AWS accounts to maximise savings. I love the personal communication we receive from Chris (CEO). They are SOC2 compliant and AWS Advanced Technology Partner which gives me full assurance of their organizational and technological security controls. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** I only regret I didn't start working with ProsperOps earlier. **Recommendations to others considering ProsperOps:** Don't wait if you have a big AWS compute presence. In the past, I'm used to staring at RI reports and then spending hours making decisions on which purchses and changes to make. With ProsperOps, I decide what % of compute spend should be in 1 year and 3 year RIs and like magic, it just works. Ths is a huge time savings and has increased our RI savings too for minimal cost. We are at 33.9% cost savings over on-demand EC2 instances. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** I'd love to see cost management expanded to other services like RDS and Elasticache (however, I get why that is challenging since those are less flexible than EC2 RIs) **What problems is ProsperOps solving and how is that benefiting you?** ProsperOps is solving AWS EC2 reserved instance cost-management. ProsperOps takes a cut of the savings they generate, which creates a business model with goals that are perfectly aligned with the ones of the customers. **What do you dislike about ProsperOps?** Nothing really. I would wouch for a lower rate if possible. **What problems is ProsperOps solving and how is that benefiting you?** ProsperOps manages AWS savings instruments on our behalf and covers 98% of our compute on-demand spend. These savings instruments are 98.9% utilized. Since starting the ProsperOps service, our Effective Savings Rate has increased by 22.2% (this is net of their charge).
