What I liked most about PromptLayer is the prompt versioning and testing. I’ve used it across multiple projects and pipelines for process automation and agentic workflows, where even a small prompt change can affect the final output a lot.

One problem I ran into repeatedly was model changes, especially when working with Gemini. A prompt that worked fine with flash-lite often didn’t fit or work as well for flash/pro, and it would suddenly start giving different results. My previous approach was basically changing the prompt in production, checking the output, and then changing it again if something broke. That wasn’t a good way to manage production prompts.

PromptLayer gave me a separate place to test these changes before pushing them to production. I could keep the older prompt version, create a new version, make the changes, and compare the results instead of guessing whether the updated prompt would work. The biggest drawback for me was that it can quickly become another layer to manage once you start using it across multiple projects and workflows. For simple prompts, I don’t think I need a full prompt management and evaluation workflow. But once you have several projects, different prompt versions, staging/production releases, evaluations, and request logs, there’s definitely additional complexity involved. For that reason, we stopped using PromptLayer services, mainly because it’s tough to keep the PromptLayer versions and the actual application workflow in sync. Otherwise, it becomes confusing which prompt version is actually being used by a particular pipeline.

Pricing was another factor for me. The platform fees become something you have to account for as part of infrastructure costs, which we weren’t ready to bear. So I wouldn’t say I stopped using it because the core product wasn’t useful—it was. I stopped using it more because, for some of my later workflows, the extra layer and cost weren’t always worth it. As an AI engineer currently working on an insurance claims project, I rely heavily on LangChain's ChatPromptTemplate to route tasks between different AI agents. Earlier, hardcoding complex system prompts meant every minor tweak required a full Azure DevOps pull request and FastAPI redeployment. I highly value how PromptLayer operates as the definitive system of record for our prompt templates. It keeps our prompts and our application code totally separate. Using their Python SDK, we simply fetch the active template using a release label like prod or staging at runtime. This allows our domain experts to visually edit, version-control, and test claim extraction prompts directly in the Prompt Registry, while our backend seamlessly executes the latest approved version without any code changes. We had to rely on their built-in in-memory caching feature (cache_ttl_seconds), along with custom fallback logic in our FastAPI queues, to make sure a temporary fetch timeout would not crash the adjuster’s mobile app webhook.

PromptLayer also recently deprecated its legacy Datasets and Evaluations UI in favor of its new "Tables" workflow. While Tables are very powerful for scoring outputs, the change still forced our engineering team to spend unexpected time migrating our historical claim backtesting pipeline to the new format.
