## About Placekey API
Placekey is a free and open universal standard identifier for any physical place so that the data pertaining to those places can be shared across organizations easily. Placekey creates a common industry standard for identifying any physical place. Eventually, there will be a Placekey for every place in the world, even those without a postal address (school district, county, neighborhood, etc.). However, Placekey goes beyond just an identifier. It’s a movement of organizations and individuals that prize access to data. Placekey members want geospatial data that is easily joined and combined…because real answers come from combining data from many different sources. It is a philosophy that data should be easy to access and data should not be hoarded. These members believe that data, when combined, can do massive good. How much does it cost to use the Placekey API? Absolutely nothing. Whether you generate a Placekey via this website or use the Placekey API, it will always be free. \*Should a business ping the Placekey API with a massive number of requests—in the millions per month, for example—we may invite you to help us cover those computing costs. Who is using Placekey? Over 500 organizations have signed on to support Placekey including Esri, SafeGraph, Carto, and Landgrid. What does a Placekey look like? Here is an example of a complete Placekey: 223-227@5vg-7gq-tvz The "What Part" (in front of the "@") consists of two unique character sequences. The first three (or more) characters refer to Address Encoding, creating a unique identifier for a given address. An address at “555 Main Street Suite 105” will have different Address Encoding than “555 Main Street Suite 106.” The second set of three (or more) characters in the What Part refers to POI Encoding. If a specific place is already included in the Placekey reference datasets, these characters will be present. The benefit of POI Encoding is that it can point to a specific Point-of-Interest that may have existed at a certain address at a given point in time. While Address Encoding allows Placekey to hone in on a specific address, there’s always the chance that either: 1. Multiple businesses can exist at the same address at the same time (i.e. a Starbucks coffee shop within a Target retail store); or 2. Multiple businesses may have occupied that space over time (i.e. what may have been a Chipotle restaurant a year ago is now a McDonald’s restaurant). The "Where Part" (after the "@"), on the other hand, is made up of three unique character sequences, built upon Uber’s open source H3 grid system. This information in the Where Part is based on the center point of that place. In other words, we take the exact latitude and longitude of a specific place and then use a conversion function to determine which hexagon in the physical world contains the centroid of that place. The hexagon is currently fixed at H3’s Resolution 10 (about 15,000 square meters). The Where Part of the Placekey is, therefore, the full encoding of that hexagon.

## Placekey API Reviews
 ### 1. Placekey is the key!!

Nothing, this very useful and looking forward to be more improved.

This can be use to validate the address quickly because we are receiving lots adresses with that it will minimize our daily job task.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Placekey API?**

My favorite thing about Placekey is how it supports so many different platforms. Whether I’m using google sheets or Python I can easily integrate the API into my workflow and append Placekeys. My second favorite thing about Placekey is that it's completely free.

**What do you dislike about Placekey API?**

Sometimes if I’m sending large amounts of API requests there appears to be a little bit of lag in the response time, but this is more of a minor, 5-minute inconvenience than a real dislike.

**What problems is Placekey API solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Prior to using Placekey we had to be extremely careful where we sourced our geographical datasets from, not because the data was poor, but because the formatting differences in the data cost us hundreds of hours to fix. Now with Placekey we can combine datasets based on the quality of the actual data, instead of having to find sets that were formatted similarly as well

 ### 3. Super effecient and thorough address standardization, along with a helpful support community

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mike M. | Project Assistant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about Placekey API?**

Placekey does a really good job supporting its users through both high quality, indepth, documentation and by offering support from their community. It is extremely easy to get in touch with a representative to assist with technical issues whenever they arise. Because of their support we were able to get our API integration up and running well ahead of schedule.

**What do you dislike about Placekey API?**

Really I can't think of anything we "dislike". In the past, we have had issues with address verification providers not covering all the addresses in our databases - but Placekey doesn't have this problem at all.

**What problems is Placekey API solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Placekey to validate the address fields in our raw datasets, which often come unformatted or with typos etc. Placekey is great because it quickly "sees through" the issues with our raw address data and makes weeding out redundancies - previously a multi-day, extremely costly task - a complete breeze.

 ### 4. Simple, Fast, and Free Address Standardization tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kayleigh F. | Head of Content & Strategy, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2021

**What do you like best about Placekey API?**

The best thing about Placekey is that it offers some of the best quality address standardization, completely free.

**What do you dislike about Placekey API?**

Its hard to think of anything to dislike with Placekey. When it was first presented to me I was a little bit suspicious of the quality we would receive from a free product, but I have been blown away by how it just works universally - other expensive address standardization tools often have issues with at least a few addresses in our datasets, but we have yet to find an address that Placekey can’t handle.

**What problems is Placekey API solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We acquire address datasets from different providers and try and combine them into a single dataset. The major issue we have with this process is that addresses are often either redundant or formatted differently. By just appending Placekeys to our datasets we solve both of these issues with ease.

 ### 5. Excellent Address key system, all for free

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shruti I. | Data Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2021

**What do you like best about Placekey API?**

The thing that makes Placekey so great is that it provides an easy-to-use, key-based, address identification system, all for free.

**What do you dislike about Placekey API?**

There really isn’t anything to dislike with Placekey. One of my co-workers had a little bit of trouble figuring out how to use the plugins, but Placekey provided excellent support, and we got the issue resolved the same day

**What problems is Placekey API solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We handle lots of addresses that come in from many different sources. Often, these addresses are either written differently, or slightly misspelled etc, and as a result we previously processed them as separate addresses, creating redundancies. Ever since we integrated Placekeys into our data, however, we were able to completely eliminate this issue, while simultaneously creating a unique reference key that would not be at risk of redundancies.

 ### 6. Makes validating customer provided addresses a breeze

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matt R. | Content Writer and SEO Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2021

**What do you like best about Placekey API?**

Placekey is extremely useful to us in that we can easily check customer-entered addresses against our larger databases - even if the customer doesn’t type in the same address we have on our end.

**What do you dislike about Placekey API?**

Honestly, nothing really to dislike. Sometimes large request take a few minutes to process but in the grand scheme of things that doesn’t really matter, and the few minutes of processing time are easily offset by the fact that the service is free.

**What problems is Placekey API solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use the API to check addresses entered by our customers against our internal database, the issue is that sometimes customers format their addresses differently then our database does so Placekey helps us validate the two datasets despite the formatting differences.
