I was concerned about my credit report and possible fraud connected to my name/account...I wanted to learn more about what was provided on the returned report, so happy about the use and Nexis ability to mail me the results. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** I felt like the process took way too long. I was under the impression that credit reports would be mailed out relatively quickly...maybe I'm just impatient but it took at least a month or longer to ever receive anything back from Nexis. **What problems is Nexis® solving and how is that benefiting you?** I saw some strange activity on my credit card, and was overall curious to dig deeper into my credit history. When using Nexis and LexisNexis, I was satisfied with the level of in depth research and detail it provided. It gave me peace of mind knowing what shows up "under" my name. ### 2. For example, if I have two requests that I need to search for, the system automatically adds the first request to the second one. In order for me to fix this, I have to log off and then log on again. One is that it can be expensive, and your library might not have access to certain databases. Sometimes the search engine is difficult to navigate, and the articles you're looking for can be hidden in different parts of the website. It also provides you with a list of explanations on how to use the connectors. You can use filters such as searching an individual/subject or an organization in a particular jurisdiction showing results for news articles and legal information such as court records. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** For a beginner, it can take some time to understand how exactly Lexis works especially if he doesn't understand filtering out results to expand or shorten the search of booleans. Too many duplicates also fetched from different sources are needed to filter out. **What problems is Nexis® solving and how is that benefiting you?** I work for an enhanced due diligence company whose main searches on research consist of legal databases from different sources and news articles from different jurisdictions. To find all that data in a single platform with a single search is what makes the Nexis a must for Due diligence companies and almost most of the organization uses it. In our organization, it helps us find case law and statutes quickly and easily. Additionally, It also offers several other features that can be helpful for legal research and cant act as a searchable database of news sources that help find information about a particular case or for identifying trends in the law. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** The only one downside I can think of is that the database can be difficult to navigate for a beginner, since it's costly you do not want an inexperienced user just using it freely. It can be hard to find what you're looking for, and the search engine is not always accurate and contains a lot of false reports which need to filter out. **What problems is Nexis® solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is used as a web-based platform that helps researchers and legal professionals in our organization quickly access a wealth of news and information with features of eliminating false results. It also offers a variety of different products, but its most popular service is its news database which includes approximately 33,000 publications from over 190 countries in multiple languages which is very helpful when researching in multiple jurisdictions. The absolute best upside is that it's a comprehensive service and includes a wide range of sources, which means that it is a great resource for finding reliable information. The other upside is that it is easy to use once you get hands-on but is confusing in the beginning. ### 22. We could also do historical research on a topic or location that spanned a long period of time. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** The platform was, unfortunately, a bit more difficult for all team members to use, as they had varying proficiencies with the boolean search format. Without a good understanding of that, it was not always easy to generate results that were fit for purpose. **Recommendations to others considering Nexis®:** I would recommend Nexis with caveats: it is wonderful for historical research of multiple media sources. However, there are better, easier-to-use tools if your organization also requires real-time monitoring of news events to gather and disseminate information as quickly as possible. Those other platforms may not have the same capability for historical data, but they provide enough to warrant consideration. **What problems is Nexis® solving and how is that benefiting you?** We no longer use Nexis, but when we did, we were trying to promptly gather as much data on a subject and location as we could. For instance, if we wanted information on protests in a specific city over the past three years, this is where Nexis was most helpful. ### 23. Take time to learn how to apply limits to make your searches more precise. Applying alternate related terms (nesting in parentheses with the Boolean operator OR) can help to retrieve more results. **What problems is Nexis® solving and how is that benefiting you?** I worked at a federal government agency that awards regional businesses every year. Nexis is useful in finding negative articles about dubious activities within a business (e.g., scandals involving pension plans, personnel under investigation for possible crimes). The other research librarians and I were able to compile bibliographies of news articles and to print out the full-text articles; after that, we submitted results to the agency that awards the businesses. The agency was then able to evaluate whether the nominated businesses were truly ethical and worthy of receiving the award. ### 24. It is a great legal researching online tool that allows users to access thousands of cases, statutes, academic commentaries, books, articles, reviews, and the list goes on. I have used Lexis Nexis for university and for work. It is an amazing tool as it provides users with a diverse array of materials, most of which the user will never have even known. It has provided me with cases and commentaries which have completely reshaped my thesis and arguments. The beauty of it is that its search engine not only searches specifically for what you typed, but it also provides you with all relevant materials if you so wish for it to do so, otherwise you can simply limit your search to specifically what you typed. This flexibility is amazing as it lets you feel as if you are in a library. Another great benefit is that, if you dont know specifically what to search for, it helps you narrow down what you are looking for by using filters such as specific legal practice areas, and specific issues within specific types of law. Again, this is another amazing tool. I highly recommend its usage. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** I cant say I dislike much about Lexis Nexis, but one thing may be that the search engine can give you 'too' wide an array of materials than what you desired, and this will make your job take much longer. Nevertheless, this issue is remedied by lexis nexis as it allows you to categorise your searches into may specific ways. **Recommendations to others considering Nexis®:** I would advise all others working or studying in the legal industry to try out and use Lexis Nexis. It really modernises the legal industry by making the most up to date cases which cover highly topical issues accessible to all users as soon as they are delivered. As a student, or academic, or practisioner, this provides you with a perfect tool to either advise you clients or write your thesis' with unique and up to date materials. **What problems is Nexis® solving and how is that benefiting you?** Lexis Nexis helps users with the modernity problem of access to information. Today, not everyone has access to libraries, and even the public ones often lack the practice-based resources that Lexis Nexis has to offer. Thus, the job of Lexis Nexis is essentially to offer users with a database, much like an online library, full of a wide array of legal resources such as cases and case judgments and case reviews and academic articles. This is the benefit I have realised. I can actually access the most modern case judgments available before they have even been printed into books or legal magazines as Lexis Nexis makes them accessible online. ### 25. Its a no brainer almost. I love that new windows will populate for certain searches because i like to continue my search and keep that extra window open on the side to view. I'm a person of many many windows and hate having to go back and forth. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** I'm not sure I have and dislikes... oh! yes i do! but its nothing major. As I stated above, entire courses were devoted on how best to tailor searches. Lexis Research was great when we didn't have easier search options for case law. It offers endless amount of resources to make researching and learning better. For example, the search engines are seriously individualized and custom to what you need. The legal search can be as broad or narrow as you like it. My favorite is using the timeline aspect of the search. Also, my favorite thing is hi-lighting the actual documents and saving them in numerous folders for different projects. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** I dislike that the interface is a little confusing. There are so many great aspects to this software but it is organized a little confusing. For example, West Law is a little more easy on the eyes. In the academic version, only standard view is available for documents, however the limit on document retrieval is generous at several thousand. One would have to be an exceptionally avid collector or prolific researcher in order to ever reach that limit. **What do you dislike about Nexis®?** The legal document search requires exact match, so it is important to enter all possible variations of the term being search. This comes with two disadvantages: One, it can be a tedious process to input the numerous possible matches; and two, it is somewhat easy to miss some variations that may be relevant but not immediately obvious. Also, while there are some customization options available, it can be easy to get lost in the sea of information without a proper system to keep track of everything.
