## Stanford SPIED Reviews
  ### 1. Best for Pattern-based entity learning

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 08, 2025

**What do you like best about Stanford SPIED?**

Usually, it consists of 2 parts one is pattern-based learning and another one is visualizing the output of one or two entity learning systems in their 2 components i like second one visualizing the output

**What do you dislike about Stanford SPIED?**

Performance Issue Parsing is done using traditional constituency or dependency parsers, which are computationally expensive and slower compared to transformer-based models.

**What problems is Stanford SPIED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For me, using SPIED has been beneficial in a learning context. It allowed me to understand how rule-based information extraction systems work, especially using dependency parsing. Unlike black-box models, SPIED made it easier to visualize and trace how the system interprets sentence structures, which really helped me build a stronger foundation in syntax and grammar-aware NLP.

  ### 2. What Makes Stanford SPIED Stand Out?

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sushil K. | Data Scientist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Stanford SPIED?**

it best for Pattern-based Analysis. practical solutions that improve result.

**What do you dislike about Stanford SPIED?**

Sometimes deviated from the result. time consuming.

**What problems is Stanford SPIED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

nlp problem

  ### 3. Might be outdated for today's LLMs based world

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consulting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 08, 2025

**What do you like best about Stanford SPIED?**

Good features for traditional NLP tools and easy to use

**What do you dislike about Stanford SPIED?**

lack of today's LLMs based NLP tools and need to be upgraded

**What problems is Stanford SPIED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It can learn entities from unlabeled text and visualize the output.

  ### 4. Spied is a good tool for few shot entity detection

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 26, 2024

**What do you like best about Stanford SPIED?**

Simplicity of the end user API and the fact that the model itself has been provided as an easy to use open source library. You can easily build it into your own product.

**What do you dislike about Stanford SPIED?**

Build process is not that simple especially for people used to python packages.

**What problems is Stanford SPIED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used it to label new text data that came in and it saved quite a bit of annotators time by providing good first pass labelled examples.

  ### 5. A great tool for visualizing diagnostic information

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lissette L. | Graphic Designer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2018

**What do you like best about Stanford SPIED?**

SPIED can help us compare 2 systems by their identities. It's very intuitive, as it learns as you go.
SPIED visualizes learned patterns and entities, and also has the ability to contrast them.
Pattern learning is very important in my workflow, and this is a great way to do it.

**What do you dislike about Stanford SPIED?**

There are some improvements to be made, it lacks a feature for users to provide
their own oracle label of a learned entity using SPIED. Also, visualization by parameters would make it easier for the user to understand systems that extract large number of patterns and entities.

**Recommendations to others considering Stanford SPIED:**

Keep in mind that SPIED is still in the works, and they are improving features.
In the future I hope that they implement visualization by summarizing the diagnostic information.
However, if you are looking for a light web browsing experience, this is the way to go.
Also, SPIED-Learn uses TokensRegex to create and apply surface word patterns to text. It also inputs in a JSON format. Javascript, angular, and jquery are required to visualize information in a web browser.

**What problems is Stanford SPIED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SPIED helps me diagnose errors and tune parameters in a pattern-based system. It's also quite easy and efficient way. Also, let's not forget that it's a light-weight web browser based visualization and that's a plus in my workflow.

  ### 6. Stanford SPIED Review

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Apparel & Fashion | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 18, 2018

**What do you like best about Stanford SPIED?**

I like how easy it is to use this program. Since the code falls on the generic side, it is easy to use your own model.

**What do you dislike about Stanford SPIED?**

I dont like that the system is still in Beta and requires testing often.

**What problems is Stanford SPIED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is great to create patterns out of our data with an easy to read output.
