But saying that with SnapMirror you don’t have automatic fail-over of any sort. You need to break SnapMirror relationship and present data to clients manually. Then synchronise volumes when problem is fixed. This is something that we manually do regularly to insure the fail-over process works. **Recommendations to others considering NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software:** NetApp SnapMirror Data Replication is a very easy, powerful and great technology, I have been using NetApp as a customer for over 16 years and every new version on ONTAP provides additional functionality that in most cases expands the ability to provide high availability and stability. The integration with CIFS, NFS is also simply outstanding when i comes to simplicity and reliability I believe that NetApp is years ahead of the game. **What problems is NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are moving the NDMP backups by using SnapMirror and SnapVault solution for speed of backup and recovery. Also using SnapMirror Data Replication for redundancy sites. I would have Primary site SnapMirror Data Replicated to Secondary site and than SnapVault to a third site for longer term retention. This has been one of the deciding factor for our community guidelines where the disk replacement in this hectic situation has been difficult, this has been the solution for that. Even if the company supports disk replacement from their own guys, data fabric removed that problem completely from the system. I think the only thing I didn't care for at first was some of Netapp's online documentation was a little sparser that I would have liked, but after my first insight conference, I got what I really needed to understand it properly. So it was mostly a user issue, but it would be nice to flesh out the documentation a bit better, imo. **Recommendations to others considering NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software:** As with all technologies, look at what your options are out there, but seriously consider using Snap Mirror. It is a beautiful technology that is simple to use while providing excellent business benefits. **What problems is NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have a very low RTO and RPO for all of our CIFS and NFS shares through use of snapmirror. In our main datacenter we have all of our file shares hosted by the netapp itself, and then we snapmirror all of that data out to our DR site.
